Most didn't but that way , I and many other young gals, could afford his lines there. We were out in the country and never went to NY city, so going to the mall and into J.C. Penney and seeing sensational Halston creations was just amazing! my mother loved his clothes also!. TRUE CLASSICS. Kimberly

There still exists the same danger of the designer being perceived as destroying the exclusivity of the brand. Michael Kors is another "cautionary tale." His brand has lost a lot of its value due to down-market sales. Being seen as the coolest person doing anything is something of a magic trick. Once the illusion is shattered, it's hard to ever regain the original allure. Selling to the masses can make you a lot of money, but you will never be seen as rare or special ever again. High-end fashion marketing requires a sense of exclusivity.

I truly miss the simplicity and elegance of Halston's designs....and Ultrasuede. I did my senior menswear fashion project (I attended Pratt Institute from 73 to 77) in Ultrasuede. I wore the suit well into the 80s. I was also fortunate enough to secure a white Ultrasuede 'safari' jacket (that I'd wear with a navy blue silk shirt and navy blue raw silk trousers). Needless to say, you can't find that kind of elegance any more.

ICONIC!!!! Funny how the choice to collaborate with JC Penney is today's equivalent of H&M, with high end brands signing up!!!!! (Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld, etc). The fashion business is profoundly bizarre.Rallying around to boost you up, to then tear you down. Practically EVERYBODY has stolen something from him to prop themselves up. R.I.P. Halston. And thank you for the modern beauty, that still oozes!!!

When Halston's death was announced on World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Mr. Jennings was very sincere about it. He quoted Halston "You're only as good as the people you dress." Halston was worn by women who were in New York Society. I recently found out Debbie Reynold's purchased all the Halston gowns and caftans from The Elizabeth Taylor Estate auction. Halston is still relevant and his fashion is timeless.

Why do people constantly think they need to tell the negative side of people's personal life ? He was an amazing driven designer however like most creative individuals you are easily distracted by the dark side of life because without night there is no day. Without grey you will nevernow colors.Irs sad how many years later we still have to judge his mistakes praise his vision ,his artistic ability,his stamp.on fashion and the many orginal looks people still copy today. This was a hard time for homosexuals dealing with societies views not just on gay men but also the AIDS crisis.
@tetchumaАй бұрын
Because negating the negative, tends to project a sense of superior entitlement; worthy of disregarding criticism. To get the full picture, you can’t sensor the unfavorable decisions of whom you are idolizing. All colors of the painting are present, flaws and perfections. The listener can draw their own conclusions from there. Otherwise, key details get overlooked and forgotten. Such as, Henry Ford was the inspiration for Germanys atrocities in the mid-30’s. The German chancellor - whose name is censored on YT - was a major supporter of Henry Ford’s antisemitism. He once sent Henry Ford a letter stating “I will make you so proud” shortly before Germanys invasion of Poland. So, in a sense, had Henry Ford not been so racist, or purchased a Detroit newspaper for the sole purpose of spreading antisemite rhetoric, which was based off fabricated “alternative facts”, WWII would have looked very, very different. Also, I know the plight of a gay man. I am one. I grew up in Dallas, TX. I know struggle of trying to overcome public opinion on the stereotype and most recently, political attacks based on religious fanaticism. Now that you have learned more of my background, this provides a well timed example to my point: You are able to make a more informed analysis of my character and perspective, when shared more details. “I’d rather have more information accessible to me, rather than less.” - and I learned that, from growing up in Texas; the book-ban capital of the U.S.
@maximillianafrancine1451Ай бұрын
The piece seeks to explain what happened to someone who should have continued at the top of his industry, is all. If his partner had been straight and he also and was encouraging him to do drugs, it would still be relevant from the perspective taken. Also, it worth recalling that there was a time when HIV was a near death sentence. Indeed, in the society he kept, being gay was almost the norm. Why do people always want to be perceived as victims? Even grown adults?

There were still real designers in those days, unfettered by big business. Halston's creations were a revelation. A radical departure. Corporations are quite incapable of art. The bottom line is all, and they can unintentionally destroy what the brand is even before it's born. And often after, as well. But it happens. I rememember running into a few bastardized examples with Designer labels at a thrift, who had been bought out. Their namesakes would have wept. It was truely THAT bad. Today the brand name is everything, and the corporation is smart enough to install another designer who has his own vision. Sometimes this is sucessful, and creates an entirely new look, BUT under the same brand name. Sometimes it is not, and a reshuffling occurs, usually quickly. Fashion changes. It is fleeting. One can't simply churn out the same thing year after year. It has to evolve. When the heart is gone, a new heart must beat in it's place. But calling it the same brand name, no longer has the same stigma. People buy the brand. In the days of Couture, fashionistas were loyal to the person. In the 70's and 80's, that still lingered. Halston is legendary not just for his clothes, but his image. And isn't image what fashion is all about ??? Sadly, in these complicated days, it is no longer possible to launch even a high end line without A LOT of outside money. Which means early loss of control. And the "vision" will always suffer, because of that. L'Wren Scott did, briefly before Jagger pulled the plug financially. Neither her line, nor her survived. She made truely exquisite things, but i heard faied to turn a profit. Turns out not even a boyfriend will tolerate that for long .. Couture, hand made, is mostly dead. Often only for obcenely expensive weddings. Labor costs are prohibitive, even at this exhorbitant price point. While even those like Laurent worked for others, initially, creating your very own house, like Channel, or Dior, or even Laurent, is no longer possible. It is a very costly business, and most fail early, failing to turn a profit. The business can be a real heartbreaker, for young talent. Most, if they're lucky, end up buried in an established House, hoping to rise from there. Few do. Tiny local companies may succeed in a tiny way. Even National is impossible,. without serious connections in every stage of the industry.. from advertising, manufacturing to shipping, always critical in a time sensitive seasonal business, they remain, if they're lucky, small and local. Or fail. So yeah, the days of people like Halston, are gone. And the world, i think, is poorer for it.

The wedding wedding with J C Penney, for Halston was a disaster because he was too ahead of his time. In fact, 21 years after that doomed deal, Karl Lagerfeld, the Chief Designer of the super-elitist houses of Chanel and Fendi, got an incredible success with his collection for H&M. It happened in 2004 and, I said it again, just 21 years after Halston's direction! Maybe the problem wasn't so much the democratization perspective of his Brand & Name: Karl put his name on a fast fashion collection just for ONCE, and that sounded exclusive enough to sold every single item within 3 days, meanwhile H sold out his name for a lot of money but loosing every decision power: This is why it was an utterly failure, since he didn't want to retire. Yes, we saw the sell of names of major designers again and again, especially at the beginning of the 2000s: Margiela, Demeulenmeister, Lacroix, Viktor & Rolf and many others, who immediately retired after selling their own names and enjoyed a private life since then. Exceptions were Galliano, Gaultier, Mugler and Jil Sander....

PS, I forgot to point out: He was Really a Great Designer, and nobody interested in real high fashion history, is allowed to forget. His only weak points were drugs, business acumen and awful friends!

Good video. Hard to watch with all the flashing lights on it.

I always thought selling his name was his downfall but obviously lifestyle contributed

Halston stood out during a fallow period in fashion, the largely tacky 1970s. In his way he became a big fish in a small pond. He was overrated, more famous for his decadent lifestyle than any clothing he might have designed. When he ousted his “too old” lover in favor of gigalos like Victoria Hugo he lost the business acumen the older man possessed. Unable to properly market his brand he exposed just how vapid fashion culture is anyway. He wore out his welcome in elite society

He was such a classy and creative designer, yet he lived such a raunchy life.

When he sold his name … he sold his soul. The drugs and Victor negatively impacted his life.

Victor 'negatively impacted' Warhol's gay porn 'oevre' too!

I would love to be able to dive into all of Halstons designs and ideas, I still feel he had a lot to offer us, but as his health wanned and the lack of strong commitment from his colleagues this did not happen .
