A long-form documentary "sequel" to the original motion picture “Glory.” This documentary was directed by Star Wars/Lucasfilm legend and Oscar winner Ben Burtt (who also edited and created the sound design) and was written by historian Ray Herbeck, Jr. It was originally released on VHS in a 2-cassette set with the movie in the early 1990s.
The Civil War epic which earned Denzel Washington his first Academy Award - and also starring Morgan Freeman, Andre Braugher, Matthew Broderick, and Cary Elwes - tells the harrowing story of the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, a July 1863 Union assault at Morris Island, South Carolina, on one of the Southern Confederacy’s prominent strongholds.
“Glory” highlights the heroics of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the climactic assault’s spearheading unit that was made up of black soldiers and commanded by Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Broderick). The formation of the 54th came in the immediate months following President Abraham Lincoln’s Jan. 1, 1863, Emancipation Proclamation, which authorized black men to officially serve in the U.S. Army and Navy.
Also check out: "Lights, Camera, War!" On the set of GLORY with CBS's "48 Hours" (1989): • "Lights, Camera, War!"...
The Story, in brief: Following the Battle of Antietam, Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) is offered command of the United States' first all-African-American regiment, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. With junior officer Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes), Shaw puts together a strong and proud unit, including the escaped slave Trip (Denzel Washington) and the wise gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman). At first limited to menial manual tasks, the regiment fights to be placed in the heat of battle.

Many of the historical movies released in the late 80s and early 90s had an accompanying documentary. I wish they would do so still. I wish we could have more movies like "Glory".

My ancestor Charles Burr Bridgham dropped out of Harvard medical school to become assistant surgeon with the 54th. He was at both Ft. Fine point, but true. Doesn't really add or detract from the historical event that caused the award to be presented, but noteworthy. Drives home the point that it's not a "school yard" competition, but a formal recognition of services rendered, above and beyond the call of duty. I'm personally acquainted with a MOH recipient, xand a SS recipient, as well. They didn't go into those fights looking to "earn" a MOH or SS. They simply reacted, and tried as best they could to save the guys in the next fighting holes. How many similar acts of valor were not noted, and recognized? That's the tragedy. Those men and women would say the same thing - I didn't do it for recognition. That's a true hero, not your Hollywood made-up crap.

Years ago when I was in college, I came across an old travelog published in the late 1860s about life in the South immediately after the war. One chapter visited Charleston, SC and related a tale about black soldiers serving as guards for that city in the final months of the war after it was captured. The honor automatically went to the first regiment to enter the city. The Southern ladies were in an uproar about being guarded by blacks, but the men performed their duty well. The book didn't identify this regiment, but could it have been the survivors of the 54th?

My great great great grandfather's military record shows that he is buried in the Beaufort National Veterans Cemetery,South Carolina as shown in this movie. His record saids he served as a sharpshooter with the Federal Union army's Third North Carolina Regiment.Just about every regiment in the Union army had a sharpshooter platoon. He was wounded by a exploded shell giving him a small shell wound while one of the bullets inside the shell enter his body. Some exploding shells contain bullets inside. His record said his friend died from this same explosion. As God saids in the Bible "Thy Shall Not Kill",amen. This is my motto. We learn from our mistakes. There got to be a better way. My favorite Civil War song is when the Union soldiers turned the Battle Cry of Freedom into a religious song by singing " Mary had a little lamb(Jesus Christ)it's fleece was white as snow, shouting the 🎶🎵Battle cry of Freedom 🌈🌈🏰🏰🌈🌈🌷🌸🌹✝️🔯✝️May Clearwater 🌈 rainbow Madonna bless everyone here with a Rosary prayer miracle, through the Angel of peace and union, amen

Nobody wants to watch another white savior film. The truth is Shaw wasn't an abolitionist he had no black friends and hated serving over them. Col Montgomery the antagonist of the film was an abolitionist that rode with John Brown and he not only mustered the first colored brigade in the Union army he constantly pestered Washington to put them in the fight. Hollywood depicted him as a crazy racist. Yeah

By 1864 Confederate General Patrick Cleburne suggested that any slave who agrees to serve in the Confederate army will be declared free. Both President Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Congress angrily rejected this idea. In the beginning of 1865 General Robert E Lee made the same suggestion. This time President Davis agreed, but at that point the war was just about over.

I have participated in the Olustee reenactment for all but two years since becoming a reenactor. ALL Civil War soldiers deserve to be remembered. It’s funny how pre-enlightenment anyone would be used in war, even slaves. Then “enlightenment” period said you had to be worth it. Just like narrowed views on all aspects of people and differences across the world.
