There's a theory , and a very plausible one , that Garling (the god knight you are talking about) is Shanks's father . In the manga, young Garling looks a lot like Shanks. Another fact is that in film Red, gorosei thought that Utah ( Shanks's daughter) was a figarland . Figarland is Garling's last name. While movies are not canon, Oda includes things that are later shown in the manga hence they become canon.

There are 9 god warriors and considering all elders are depited as "god warrior" of this or that its easy to assume they are part of that order. Garling is a leader which makes 6 so we are 3 short. Who would that be? Shanks? Considering his similar looks with Garling and powerful haoshoku which elders posses it viable but I guess he won't end up as one of them.
