The only way to give sun wukong his freedom was by having that circlet taken off because that’s how he was being controlled, and that couldn’t happen without him dying except he’s immortal so another means was in order…hence the rock thingy. Erlang literally was the secret good guy that gave wukong the chance at freedom by spearing him into that mountain so that the destined one could be given the circlet and that cycle would be broken by getting the true ending, I may be wrong about some things I am by no means an expert lore guy or know much about Chinese mythology but that’s what I got out of the game

Elder Monkey is The GHOST or Spiritual Manifestation of OG Wukong it tells you that when it shows Elder Monkey inside the Rock/Amber he is the aged OG Wukong & explains why he never leaves Wukongs mountain. The identity of the old monkey has been discussed among chinese. The most convincing part so far is that he's actually Tang San Zang, the master of Wu Kong during the journey to the west. The proof is the way he called Ba Jie and all the knowledge he has on Wu Kong even to the details. And the way he narrated chapter 3 sounds a bit emotional since he's the monk in the ending cutscene sitting beside the turtle.

Well as an asian dude that stick to the og series journey to the west 1986 and even read the novel and the black myth as well, i might have thought that the one that behind all the events in the game is someone who is on the celestial court cause i read nearly the whole lores of the monster in the game and found out some easter eggs and some details said that. My eng was not good enough so i can not have the full explaination but afterall i am for sure the elderly monkey is not the true villian (my sense told me so)

The true villain is Buddha for not removing the headband from Sun Wukong after he finished his Journey to the West, and so he had to do some elaborate scheme of killing himself so he can reincarnate without the headband as The Destined One. The bad ending has The Destined One once again putting the headband on dooming himself to a life of servitude, and the good ending he's free.

But it was still a dick move from Buddha to not remove it completely when Wukong finished his journey and aligned himself completly with Buddhaism. What's worse is that there was active sabotage bcs the headband cannot just activate on its own, there needs to be an enchantment. So either Buddha gave away the details of that enchantment to the Jade Palace, or Buddha was on the same page with Jade Palace and wanted to remove Wukong, thus doing the enchantment himself. Either way it looks bad on him.

I doubt it, Buddha for the most part of the game was absent through the entire game, I think most likely while still in Buddhahood Wukong devised a plant to get rid of the headband with Erlang while secretly being aided by Buddha to get the celestial court into a false sense of security and eventually have wukong return while they’re at their most vulnerable and without the headband he’d defeat the eastern and western gods. Although this is just speculation since I’m not a Buddhist or really into the black myth lore so it’s probably not a correct speculation.

As a Chinese, I feel sorry that this game is too complicated for guys with little knowledge about Journey to the West. The Elder monkey is actually Wukong's Master, Named Jing Changzi or other name Tang Seng. He just follows the player's choice, not really on the side of Heaven. If the player choose not to get Wukong's Meme, then he will wait till one come and did that. He believe eventually this will happen.

The Elder Monkey has a floating shawl which only means he is a divine entity/bodhisattva and the only monkey who ever got to become a bodhisattva was Sun Wukong dubbed the Victorious Fighting Buddha. Me thinks the old monkey is Wukong's enlightened self that was left free of his control when he released five of his roots except his mind upon his death. That enlightened self for obvious reasons is not aligned with him (because he doesnt want to be bound by the rules of heaven which comes along being an enlightened), and more likely is an agent of the Buddha if not the celestial court. This old monkey puts the tightening headband on the Destined One so as to control Wukong again and continue his penance inside the stone. In the good ending, he also tries to put the headband but before he could successfully do so, the Destined One remembers the OG story/memories that Erlang kept. In the journal it was said that even Erlang took a relic of Wukong, in truth what he took was Wukong's memories (for safekeeping). The 6th relic, the mind that is our Destined One is actually an empty mind, devoid of memories and we are supposed to get the memories from Erlang to get the good ending.

@@KaletheRelentlessThe old monkey doesn’t seem to be the villain of the story, more of the observer and the teacher throughout the journey, the reason why the old monkey decided to put that headband was because it was either fate to begin with if the destined one was truly sun wukong, the whole point of that journey was to complete quest and explore missions which the point of freedom which sun wukong never had that led to the “Good ending”.the “bad ending” focuses on capturing the six relics or entirely focus on the goal than the freedom of what you get, thus this “focus” is a way of him being disciplined and not entirely free which fails the whole point of sun wukong’s rebirth, sun wukong wanted to be free without the headband controlling him, and by the bad ending, it only determines that the destined one was merely a disciple following the old monkey’s orders at the beginning of the story.

The "master" was allowing Wukong to choose his destiny, taking neither celestial or Buddha side. The details were in the write up (in chinese) of the elder monkey where it mentions the celestial side sees the elderly monkey is "gambling" while the Buddha side said "to gamble is to lose". Which the elderly monkey responded "I neither gambled nor did I lost" Coincidentally, in the animation ending of chapter 3, Yellow Brow boosted his win regarding the wager with previous incarnation of Tang Monk about human greed; which wukong master replied "why are you so adamant on winning and losing?"

My theory is that Yuan Shou Cheng is actually the main body behind the sufferage only reason is because he is there every time before a boss fight. So my belief is that he portraying as him but is a corrupted Zhong Kui trying hold Wukong back from HIS master plan of converting deities and celestial beings into his demons. Because he was already seen possessing yellow loong. Feels like the Duke from RE8 it’s just too coincidental. (I am also not expert in this lore but this my humble game theory)

It makes sense when you think that the heaven sent all their soldiers to earth to try and stop the Destined one from bringing Wukong back, but there was no direct intervention from the court whatsoever They could've deployed someone as, if not more powerful than Erlang (like the girl that decapitated the bull demon king) to take the Destined one down instead of a bunch sending a bunch of minions that they know very well are no match for the Destined one

The "bad ending" isnt bad if you think in another way. The headband ain't a bound. The Destined one still need a mind train. The headband is like a mind training for the monkey. The old monkey isn't bad, he's helping the monkey to enlighten the mind and he might be Guanyin Bodhisattva since Guanyin is the one who would help Wukong the most

Ok. I read some of this comments. So, in the "true" ending we've got free from this headbend. But what prevents celestial gods from making a new bandage, or taking this one, or from a black bear, and then put it on his head? I don't think he can do anything against the immortal gods, especially by destroying his former body.

The lore says many destined one has returned and none has told the same stories. Implied u are not the first to come back alive so where did they go? My guess is those who fail to gather all of the relic fail to become the new wukong are locked away to prevent future problems. It probably not even him doing it but wukong himself fearing of creating an evil version of him. Without his mind, ull have just unrestrained godlike power. After all the stone holds wukong will so he have control of who comes and who goes.

no one can kill wukong but himself he lets himself die then reincarnated as the destined one who then if you complete all the side missions will become wukong himself just freed of the headband wukongs plan the whole time is to be free from the celestial court and the golden headband as said in the video amazing game and hope there is more to come

check the elder monkey's outfit at the end of the game, he has a strange floating circular cloth, which the giant god with elephant themed armor also had in the start of the game. Just a theory, but being on the side of the gods, plus this similarity might mean its him. Of course, unless he has a different role in the myth, Im not so familiar with the original story.

Actually that monkey was the monk that was sent in a mission and wukong got the mission to help him if he wanted to get his freedom back but the celestial court lied to him and after came for him (that’s the explanation for the beginning) and the reason for the head band when he puts it on his head if you don’t defeat all the secret bosses is because wukong splitted in 6 vessels but the last one was his mind but you can’t absorb wukong mind if you don’t have his memories( you can see that when you defeat the last secret boss and see he got something out from his 3rd eye) and because he couldn’t absorb his last vessel is putting the headband back and seal him to the stone because he actually failed his mission and was better just to seal him again then let him repeat the mistakes of the real wukong.
