The very end to me is interesting. The two security people watching in the parking garage ask "what else is on" after this show goes off the air. So the show was made a big deal but after it's over people just move on because, after all, it was just a TV show to them.

@@nsasupporter7557 Excuse my english, not a native speaker. Would not say that. Many films are succesful at the box office, even if they are ahead of their time. Look at the big ones in the past. There are multiple ways to be ahead of your time. In the cinematic way (tech. film making) like for example "The Matrix" with all the crazy visuals and CGI for it's time or like this movie in the theme/story. Sure, ppl watched and liked the movie back then, but don't forget... this movie was in a time where "Jim Carrey" was THE man for entertainment, so ppl watched the movies with their known and loved stars anyway. Where you would be right in my opinion is, that this movie wasn't ground breaking, like some of the "ahead" movies, but not every movies has to be like that. At the end it doesn't really matter, it's an insane good written and acted movie.

@@NeverKilledHillock yeah, I can see your point. Though, I didn’t mean that movies that were ahead of their time weren’t successful at all. They would become a classic later after they came out, for example the movie “Tron” from 1982… did you see that? That movie was a perfect example of being ahead of it’s time. When I first learned that it was in 1982, I had a hard time wrapping my head around that because it definitely didn’t seem like a movie from that time period and it didn’t do well that the box office I don’t think but it became a classic later on because it was a very cool movie. And I guess you’re right about Truman Show… it was a huge hit movie because it had alot to do with the fact that it was a Jim Carrey movie before anything else

You guys should also watch "EdTV". It came out just after this, it's not as great, but comparing them is more like apples to oranges. It's more of a straight comedy. You guys might be too young to remember, but these movies both came out when Reality TV was becoming such a popular phenomenon in the culture. It's made by Ron Howard who I love! He was a child actor on TV here, that grew up to be a great Director. I think the only movie of his you've seen so far was "Apollo 13". It stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and it's more of just a fun cute movie.

Personally, I think that this script by Andrew Niccol is one of the few in the entire history of cinema that can compete in quality with the wonder Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale did for Back to the future (which, for me, is the best script ever written). And I share with Viki her tears as this movie draws to a close, and Truman finally gets his freedom.

I would put V for Vendetta on that list personally. Everything links together so well. I'm kinda surprised Eggy in the Basket never got more popular.
@thepsychophonic
@thepsychophonic 2 жыл бұрын
@@parker469a "V for Vendetta" is a good movie, because it has good performances, and because it adapts the comic on which it is based quite faithfully. But it is not an original script, but just that, an adaptation. And, as often happens in these cases, the true masterpiece is the comic of the god Moore and David Lloyd. And if you compare the two, the movie isn't even a hundredth of the quality of the comic book (probably the only time a movie has far surpassed the quality of the book it's based on was "Jaws," an absolute work of art, made from Benchley's mediocre novel). In any case, I was referring to "The Truman Show" and "Back to the Future" as original scripts, not adaptations.
@parker469a
@parker469a 2 жыл бұрын
@@thepsychophonic Umm, about that, Moore said it was so different from what he was intending with his book it might as well have just been it's own thing. I watched a video comparing the two and yeah, most of the people and main themes even are almost completely different. They have some parallels to each other but their differences are substantial. CineFix did a really good break down of how much was changed. It's a little hard to follow since there's so much changed but they did what they could.
@thepsychophonic
@thepsychophonic 2 жыл бұрын
@@parker469a Well, I'm just saying that the comic is an absolute masterpiece and the movie is just a good movie. And I add that, in my opinion, what is good about the film is precisely the main idea, which is the most faithful to the comic, and not the things that have changed.

This movie resonated with me so hard. When I was a kid, I literally used to imagine that I was living in this kind of world, with a big dome just beyond the horizon and all the cars and model planes just waiting outside to be sent in on cue. Sometimes I used to spend hours watching the cars on the road outside my house to see if I could spot recurring patterns. The Truman Show is almost literally my childhood dream/nightmare/paranoid fantasy made real.

The True Man being deceived by a system in which everyone pretends to be something they're not, while being staunch about defending that very same system all the way in the name of what's "good", and in which real-life drama is reduced to ephemeral entertainment... This movie excels at revealing the shadows of the modern world.

In the late 90s, before streaming video or KZbin, there was a website called JenniCam. Jennifer Ringley was a college student who set up web cams all over her apartment that ran 24-7. Once per minute the cameras would upload a picture to the website so you could always check in and see what she was doing (ANYTHING she was doing) . This movie was partially inspired by that site.

In the US, crossed fingers have 2 meanings. If you say you have your fingers crossed it means you are wishing it happens. Probably a Christian connotation with a cross. But, there is a different meaning - if you make a promise but you cross your fingers it means you aren't really promising. The crossed fingers are crossing out the promise. This is why Truman's wife had her fingers crossed when she was saying "I do" at their wedding.
