The Truman Show Was Originally Going To Feature Him Fighting Crime (Favourite Jim Carrey Roles)

Jim Carrey is an actor who is best known for playing comedic roles in movies. Even while doing a more dramatic role in The Truman Show, he still came across as humorous and upbeat. So it's hard to imagine that The Truman Show was originally going to have him fighting crime.

My favorite scene was always the one where Truman starts to doubt the reality of things and goes to confide in his friend. They're sitting on an incomplete bridge and his friend says something like, "you know you can trust me" or something and then it cuts to the directorial team feeding him the lines. That scene was bone chilling
@mrcritical6751
@mrcritical6751 3 жыл бұрын
What makes it even more bone chilling is Truman’s reaction to his dad showing up soon afterwards, the directorial crew perceive him crying as Truman being brought to tears that his father is alive but Truman’s actually thinking about how his dad and his best friend are in on it and he has to pretend he doesn’t know to have any chance of escape

I think he stops believing in his friend on the bridge after the incident with his wife. Then when he's crying and smiling on the bridge, its him cutting the ties. Once he sees his dad, its set in stone that his life is fake.

My favorite scene that still haunts me is when he, his wife, and his mom are looking through photo albums and while they go to make some drinks, he flips through the book a bit more...and you see his future family, them and a couple kids....but Truman is the same age. Meaning they were probably going to do an accident storyline, where after he wakes from a "coma" he would have woken "years" later, to his newfound children.
@cassanateli

Lol, so you're saying ageing freezes in time when someone goes into a coma?
@JamesCPotter13
@JamesCPotter13 3 жыл бұрын
@@cassanateli No, obviously, but with a "coma", stress on the quotations, they could knock him out for a few hours, or so, and once he wakes up, lie to him that time has passed while they change the town around and introduce the new characters. If he questions why he doesn't look any older, just have his "doctor" write it off as good genetics.

One thing I found pretty unsettling was that the film has a "happy ending". However the music playing during the end credits is very sinister. Makes you think despite walking through "the door" he's still not out of the woods yet.

I mean even after he makes it out he's totally ruined mentally. He'll never trust anyone ever again and will always live in fear that hes just being used or manipultated for someone elses entertainment. Not to mention hes the biggest star in the world and even in the real world everyone will know who he is and all his personal stuff growin up and they will probably treat him differently and use him as a celebrity just like the extras would treat him in the dome when they finally got close. So even tho it ends on a high note with his essential F U to the show runner its still a pretty dark ending

One of my favorite Jim Carry movies is definitely The Cable Guy because it fits roughly the same tone as this and plays with a lot of the same themes. Any scene with Carry could simultaneously be comedic or horrific depending on how much you know about the film. I think my mom found an old VHS at a garage sale, saw Jim Carry on the cover, assumed it was a straight comedy film, and brought it home for me. Going into it with absolutely no context of what was about to unfold made it so much more impactful.

Even more incredible in that old "impressions" standup bit by Jim Carrey is when he remolds his face to be James Dean. Truly astounding; it's on KZbin and worth seeking out. And I, too, find _Me, Myself, & Irene_ to be an underappreciated example of Jim's physical comedy mastery. My favorite bit is the scene (in the police office?) where Jim's character has such intense dry-mouth from his medication that his face basically turns into that of a zombie. When Renée Zellweger turns around and sees that face on Jim for the first time ever, she does a scared take that was 100% real, according to the commentary, and which they thankfully left in the movie. On "examples of prior art" when it comes to pretending to be two people fighting over control of one body, though, don't forget to mention the work of Steve Martin in 1984's _All of Me_ (where he and Lily Tomlin fight for control of Steve's body). And then of course there's Bruce Campbell's amazing physical comedy with his possessed hand in _Evil Dead II._

Ok, so I don't know if maybe this is an already thought upon theory or the hidden idea behind the film, but when I saw the Truman Show I had this idea that due to the fact that this show that is Truman's life has been going on for soo long and for these problems to start happening and for him to realize he's a character has to be a kind of final episode(s) scenario. Now, in the early days of the broadcast, problems are bound to occur (e.g. people showing up on set for a self shout-out); but after 27 years for things like a spotlight to fall, for him to hear a radio talk of his movements, etc. shouldn't happen. That's why I believe that this realization and escape of Truman's was orchestrated to give the program an amazing send off.

The fact he isn't consistently cited as one of the all time greats is a crime imo

12:46 My favorite Jim Cary character is the protagonist from The Mask. I'm not calling him "The Mask" himself because you could argue that the villain that took and wore the mask at the end was also "The Mask."

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was amazing. It's the ultimate dramatic role played by Jim Carrey.

The funniest part about the Evan Backstabber scene is, if you have it on dvd, the gibberish is actually dubbed in different languages.

Perhaps not his BEST performance, but The Cable Guy is massively underappreciated. I still have a soft spot for Ace Ventura Pet Detective though. Man I laughed so hard at so many scenes in that movie. I can count on one hand the number of movies in my lifetime that have made me laugh like that.

In the book Wild Cards XVII: Death Draws Five, the former super hero Fortunato hates Bruce Almighty, and think the character is wasting his gift. I found that funny as one of the only real-life references in that book.

Favorite Jim Carrey roles fall into 2 categories: comedy and drama. Favorite drama was either Truman or The Majestic (i still haven't seen Man on the Moon or Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind). For comedy i think the best are when he plays the straight man whose life goes nuts like Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, or Mr Popper's Penguins (which was WAY better than it had any right to be). I never dug his really iconic stuff like Ace Ventura or Cable Guy. Liked The Mask as a kid though
