BEAUTIFUL POLAND: Recorded from the highest tower of the St Mary's Basilica. Great sound and beautiful views of Old Town Kraków.
Hejnał Mariacki is played every hour on the hour, four times in succession in each of the four cardinal directions, by a trumpeter on the highest tower of the city's Saint Mary's. The noon performance is broadcast via radio to all of Poland and the world.
Special thanks to Mr. Trumpeter (does anyone know his name?) for a great performance and for greeting visitors from different countries despite the language barrier. This video is dedicated to you, sir.
Please note: It takes a lot of time and a significant effort to produce these videos. Please LIKE, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE if you enjoyed. Thank you!
Lily

It is played hourly in four directions from the church tower and commemorates a Mongol invasion in 1241 when, according to legend, an arrow cut short the trumpeter’s alarm signal to close the city gates.

My father heard this many a day when he went to school in Krakow between 1927 and 1937. He crossed from Ulica Długa 50 to his school in the mornings. Then, in 1939, as a teenager he joined the war effort from the UK to liberate Poland.

From Wiki: "According to a popular 20th-century legend, during a Mongol invasion of Poland (the invasion usually cited is that of 1241), Mongol troops led by General Subutai approached Kraków. A sentry on a tower of St Mary's Church sounded the alarm by playing the Hejnał, and the city gates were closed before the Tatars could ambush the city. The trumpeter, however, was shot in the throat and did not complete the anthem, and this is the legendary reason as to why performances end abruptly before completion."

did you know that the trumpet was cut off short because a trumpeter was shot with an arrow while doing this by the tartars in the old days so the trumpet sound became shorter

There's an old legend regarding "The Haynal" as it is called. One night Cossacs (or Mongols depending of version) used rafts to sneak into the city through Wistula river and started raiding using Night as cover when they snuck into Mariacki church they immidietly killed guy on watch there so he wouldnt rise an alarm but his young apprentice (or just some random kid that just happened to see invaders depending on the version) run to the tower and started playing the Hejnal (as he couldnt think of any other song or simply didnt know how to play any other song yet as he was just an apprentice depending on the version), Cossacs run after him when they heard the trumpet and killed him while he was still playing resulting in sudden and loud thud as his heart was pirsced but it was too late people ware awake and Krakow was saved. To this day the Heynal is played the way people heard it that night with sudden, abrupt and violent end to it to honor the boy.
