As someone from Scotland who has lived in Australia, RAIN IS NOT THE ISSUE! The TEMPERATURE of the rain that is the problem! When it rains in Australia it is hot rain therefore, you can stand in it and get wet but it will not make you cold, you will feel wet but not miserable and cold. When it rains in the UK it can be freezing cold and therefore make your body freezing cold as you sit in COLD wet clothes for the rest of the day. Clothes dry easy in Australia when the rain stops because the temperature rarely goes below zero during the day, a average winter is 15-20 degrees. Clothes in the UK never dry after rain because the temperature is too cold to dry clothes.

What's important is not the amount of rain but the number of days that are sunny and not overcast. There are various locations in the UK that have micro-climates and get very little rainy or overcast days. Places with good continuous sunny weather are East Midlands, South Devon, Norfolk, East Sussex. Places to avoid are North Devon, All of Cornwall, Wales, Bristol, the whole of Ireland, Northern England and Scotland. If you like mild winters goto Cornwall but avoid it for the rest of the year as the weather there is terrible in Spring, Summer and Autumn.

When we went to California back in the early 80's on holiday, the weather was fantastic. Blue skies, hot sunshine, and hardly a breath of wind. On the flight back home, I noticed it was clear skies most of the way back, but I knew when we were getting near to dreary old Britain, when we began to fly over a thick carpet of clouds, then descended through the gloom and landed back at Heathrow Airport.

It's not the rain amount I look at, it's the type of rain. Torrential downpours do happen but they're not that typical. Nov 2003 was a rare event. Most of the rain is light to moderate.

Ooh, I remember the flooding in 2009! I felt so sorry for home owners whose homes got flooded. They'd have massive insurance problems & would have practically no chance of ever selling their house. I think a lot of the flooding was down to councils not keeping drains clear or dredging rivers.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the December 2015 floods. I'm not actually sure which flood was worse, to be honest. The (Summer) 2009 floods stuck in my mind most prominently, because I know people who got flooded then. Family and friends of family did. Also, you don't expect months of almost non-stop rain in Summer time.

Whoops, I've got my years mixed up! It WAS the Summer of 2007 I was thinking of, not 2009. And I've just remembered; I was in Northumbria in 2009, which I think is near Cumbria. There was a lot of rain and flooding. I think I was there around October/November.

Are they kidding, the heavy rain in the century in the UK is 2.4 inch in just 24 hrs (is BBC missed something in 4.18 ). That is classified by Indian Meteorological department as moderate rain (anything between 15.6 to 64.4 cm). In last year Avalanche village in my state in India recorded 385 inch of rain in 24hrs. you know if you think about it it's not just British weather that can be bad, In America, there are places that are cloudy and rainy and cold too, for example, San Fransisco, Portland or Seattle or Maine and also countries near the UK like Belgium, Ireland, Holland and Denmark so we are not alone! I've been to Amsterdam last summer and it was cloudy and cold and rainy and I hated it! (but the city was still nice tho). basically for Americans, British summer is 70% Seattle and Portland for the rain 20% San Francisco for the chilly evenings and mornings and 10% New York for when our weather gets really nice and yes a lot of comments here are about people who wanna come to England because of the rain and yes it does rain a lot but some days in summer it can get hot and sunny and London is beautiful on a hot sunny day! in summer there are also Thunderstorms and those are cool. The rainest time of the year for the UK is autumn, I don't really like autumn here cause it's so rainy and I have just said goodbye to those sunny days in summer :(

I live here, and rain sucks! All you from America who think rain is nice are mad. Having clouds overhead constantly is depressing, makeup is always ruined, you're often cold and damp, you can't spend much time outside (because being wet is uncomfortable), driving is harder and more dangerous, days are darker. People wanting to live where it rains is a classic mad case of wanting whatever you don't have. Give it a month or two, you'd be really sick of it!
