Honestly, Tourist does not really get to see the real side of Brunei. People here are like normal people. We wake up, get ready for work/school, during the weekdays we go to the mall or our cousin’s houses to have fun. And The empty streets are normal during ramadhan since its hot outside and we prefer to stay cool inside the house plus Brunei has the highest car ownership in S.E.A which mean barely any bruneians walk. And as you said, the syria law does not effect us at all. Since the start of the syria law last year, I have not heard of anyone being stoned alive. Honestly, most of us are unbothered. Plus the crime rate of Brunei is pretty low. Out of the crimes, the highest is theft while Murder is extremely rare. Which means the chances of someone’s stuff being stolen is higher than someone being murdered. Though, I have to criticize that Brunei’s young unemployment rate is really high. There are barely any jobs available as the old people are still there. Which led the youngsters to steal. And about being privileged, we are quite privileged to have •extremely cheap medical care only $2 for bruneian nationals and if there is any need of surgery it will be subsidized by the sultan. •free education if you go to public school and Textbooks are free as it’ll be lended by the school •cheap housing If you noticed, compared to other countries it is extremely rare to see a bruneian sleeping on the streets. This is because housing is prepared by the sultan. Though they’re needed to pay, they’ll only be asked half or less than the house’s original cost. •Subsidizes I talked about subsidized Health Care. Other than that, We also have subsidized petroleum for our cars which is really cheap and subsidized bags of rice as it is our staple food. The sultan even bought land as big as Brunei in Australia filled with cattle to provide us our meat and dairy. About people who don’t speak english. That is mostly expected of older people. They’re a higher chance of a youngster to be able to speak english. Most aren’t fluent but they would be able to hold short conversations. This is mostly due to the fact of being overwhelmed/nervous by foreigners. Even I fumble when I speak to any of the teachers who aren’t malay or chinese. And about people watching your phone. It’s true and not true. In every country everyone uses a network. The network they use is able to track their search history. Its the same here. Plus it’s more controled here. The network company we use will block spam accounts/emails/messages which might lead to viruses or scams. But its not like that anymore since the network company in Brunei is currently combining so it’s currently inconsistent as it’s still at the early stage of being one. Though the wifi is a little bit faster than before since there’s no competition. As in use the network you want to use. (No losses as they’re one now) Lastly, I think that the best time to come to Brunei is either during Raya or National Day. On these days you’ll be able to see the Brunei in a nutshell. P:s I’m sorry if I offended you in anyway. I’m also sorry that you had an awful experience in our country. 🙏🏻 Sorry that this is long..
@JustWojtek4 жыл бұрын
Hey there, thank you for adding all this valuable information! 🙏 I am not offended and I did not have an awful experience, I'd rather describe it as interesting and insightful. As a foreigner and outsider I unfortunately lack a little bit of understanding and also missed some of the insights due to the short time we spend in Brunei. Hope you understand, that the intention of this video is not to put emphasis on my opinion but solely on the experience. Like for instance overacting to "pocket photos" on my phone. But if you'd ask for my opinion I'd say: Yes. Bruneian are as normal as people get, very kind and life also seemed very normal. What I experienced was mostly being confronted with my own prejudice, which actually turn out being hard to prove themselves to be true. I also think I should have engaged in more conversation, yet I was afraid it would be inappropriate to ask "critical" questions. Wasn't aiming to offend anyone here. Maybe you can understand, that for me as a westerner some things seem hard to understand or comprehend, just like it might be for you visiting a culturally very different country. Really appreciate your input as Bruneian here. Thanks for adding this to the context of the video 🙇

The “upperclass” houses aren’t really upperclass houses. People living in Kampong Ayer prefer to live there and The “upperclass” houses are actually built by the sultan for those who suffered from fire in Kampong Ayer. Fun fact about Syariah Law. There is a provision that says if you fail to place your item securely i.e lying around carelessly, and it gets stolen, then it's your fault and the thief goes scot-free. Weird right? But that is how fair Syariah Law is. When someone nabs you doing something deemed wrong under the law then that person better be of upstanding character or else his words alone will not be acceptable by the courts, and no CCTV footage, pictures etc can be used as proofs either so winning a case is more skewed towards the "wrongdoer". But worry not that is why we have a 2-tier law system. Even if the accused got off free of Syariah Law he can still be charged under civil law where all of the evidence mentioned above can now be taken into consideration by the courts. There you go...

Well I respect your thoughts and honesty about our country, what you see in Brunei is what you get. Brunei has been subjected to international media headlines previously, and also had it share of condemnations by several figures, bodies and countries. Honestly speaking it is the media who exaggerate the actual facts. So if it is Sharia Law and how our country imposed the law by hoping to see public executions, honestly you will not see it and to this date none has been executed by way of stoning, hands being amputated for stealing just to let you know. To clarify the misconceptions, there are tons of procedure before the guilty can be sentenced which involves lots of religous sentiment, legislation and meticulous involvement, just chill dude Brunei has been a peaceful country for a lengthy period of time the reason why less people is out is because of the encouragement to stay home due to the covid19 pandemic, as you have said in the beginning "the people didnt get any out of it" *bruh* the king cared for us he gave houses, no taxes (except for road tax), he even gave 1k brunei dollar annually to the poor regradless of what religion or race they belong to, this is just some of what the king has given, bear in mind that His Majesty ruled for 53 years on the throne and during his reign people are living in "luxurious" life despite being humble, you don't have to worry on yourself, we are not that "barbaric"... Haha,just enjoy the "norm" and have a good time for your next destination. Brunei was a former British colony making English a de facto lingua franca for many Bruneians and is the language of trade and commerce in the country. English is taught at a very high level within the country's education system and is the official medium of instruction from K to University. I would attest that Bruneians have one of the best English comprehension skills maybe only second to Singapore in Southeast Asia. Bruneians are always praised during regional meetings as to having good command and fluency of the English language.

@@JustWojtek All right, So you are saying, in this modern world you should consider homosexuality, adultery lightly!? What about our next generation, I mean I am 17. If you we take this kind of sexual things lightly our next generation will be doomed. People will forget about the modesty. Divorce, cheating rising rapidly because of us, we are not controlling our-self. A 7 years kid will take adultery, homosexuality lightly. But if a kid see this that doing this kind of thing will cause that punishment. He won't do that. He or she will lead a better life in future with modesty. I know this punishment is really terrible. But this fair will lead people into something good. Parents love their kids sometimes they punish them for good because they know what is good for them. As well as the creator loves us and knows what is good for us . You are talking about modern world bro!? What we have iphone 11, satellites, nuclear!!. This makes us modern!? @@ostanime2462 that got a little out of hand. I understand your concern. So let's not talk about "modern" but about "western" world. I appreciate your concern for following generations. I grew up in one where adultry and homosexuality is a possibility - not necessarily okay, definetly not taken lightly, but also not worth physical punishment - and well... somehow society keeps working. I guess some modesty got lost along the way and there definetly is a lot of arrogance to be found in the "western world" - but it's not chaos, it definitely isn't bad and a lot of people still keep turning into their faith and to god. What you are definitely right about is, that there is more then we both know in this world. Yet it is always interesting to hear a different opinion and get a new perspective on things, don't you think?

3:53 Brunei may not have a lot of 'tall' buildings, but there is a reason for that. There is a law that states: *Local law decrees that no other building can be taller than the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque's 52-metre marble minarets.* At least, that's what I think it is. I'm not too big on laws and the like. And I'm sorry you had that awful experience, stuff like that rarely happens here. On the bright side, you got to see some of the good parts of Brunei that aren't are of what the media (Though, however unreliable it is) makes us to be. We love visitors, and don't mind to lend a helping hand. Yes, there are some unfriendly people, but all countries have their fair shares. A majority of the population has English as a second language, but it's mostly the younger generations and young adults. Most of us love and respect people, whether they be of the same community or not. We do, however may have a slightly sarcastic tone when we're speaking with people close to us, but it's all in good fun. This is the first of your videos I've seen, and I'm sure it won't be the last. BRUNEI Accept Singapore dollar and Brunei dollar. Some shop if the boss is there they accept USD or any currency but normal shop workers or public transport dont accept because they dont want to get into accepting fake money. Also, I went to thailand , india , singapore or malaysia and china. Ofcourse i need to prepare atleast their local currency. Im glad they met the normal kind local as always in public to help them pay.

Regarding the phone and tracking I think in 2023 everyone needs to be cognizant that government entities probably are checking in on us at various points. You've just got to be aware of what you say and whwre you say it and what not. Like I live in the US currently and as free as the US may seem I am certain the government looks in on us especially post 9/11.

Brunei is not one of the richest country in the world it is ranked only at 33rd with GDP PER CAPITA of 33k. It was once entered top 10 and 20 but the oil is falling which makes economy fall. Ive been there it was nice people were friendly humble nice and hospitable. People is not that rich but rich in heart. The only problem is that most of oil money is in the hands of dictator not in citizens. But still a great country with cheap health care, free education , free house for beggars, cheap cars and gas which my country NZ does not have but except a little bit for that healthcare and cars. Some Bruneians also welcome me while walking in the streets of Bandar Seri Begawan while taking video :>

I must have visited a different Brunei. The country I visited is rich on paper but people are relatively poor. Bruneians have no social life and the town is usually empty. Kampung Ayer was full of floating trash. Brunei is an absolute monarchy therefore the country is the private property of the sultan. Bruneians are not citizens but subjects. The only rights they have are those granted by the monarch. Brunei is a country with no real economy, no agriculture, no media and no politics. Religion is used instrumentally as a form of social control. The sultan has no clue how to deal with the country's problems so his only recipe is the intensification of religious devotion. Tough times are ahead when the oil stops flowing.

ask the Islamic scholar about the shariah law , don't search from google hmm..
@JustWojtek3 жыл бұрын
I guess, you are right about that. At the time I wasn't aware, that western sources of course only display western opinion. Do you have any recommendation on how to politely and respectfully reach out to scholars?

"Makes me appreciate how privileged i am" like LOL kid, who r u ? what are your qualifications, certificates, etc....? First of all, i'm not even from Brunei. Privilege is something you earn in life through successful achievements and good morals, yet you have non of them. The pure reason behind you thinking you are privileged is not even confidence, it's being spoiled by your mother. No wonder how you are being so dramatic and attention seeking.

I've been through this over and over again in the comments: the way I created this video, gives of the wrong vibes and it is my fault. I tried to balance things 50:50 - positive and negative - but I've complete left unchecked the natural human inclination to weight negatives stronger than positives - I failed here. Please rewatch the end of the video in case you don't believe me: I literally say, that what stays with me are the positive things, the kindness of the people of Brunei. All the comments, yours included, taught me and remind me, that I can, should and need to do better. Although, I hope you agree, that's no reason the attack my parents for my failings, don't you think?
@ElGanador02 жыл бұрын
@@JustWojtek The single purpose of me mentioning a parent, is to describe you. I'd never attack/insult anyone's parent "I'd rather do it with the person himself". And that's something you should understand as a content creator, that the audience might not only object to the content itself, but the person you are as well. Have a lovely day, Wojtek.

@@ElGanador0 I still consider that part unnecessary. Your and the critisism of others is not only welcome but in this case deserved. That's why I respond to each comment. Anyway, thank you for replying.
