I remember Butterfly McQueen, as a child living in Augusta Georgia, in the late 1950's. The neighborhood children loved her. She taught children music and played baseball with us on our clay baseball field. Dust would fly as she ran the bases but she didn't care. She laughed and kept running. The neighborhood we lived in was called Terrace Manor. It's original design was made of several streets that formed something like a clover, surrounded by forest. Butterfly McQueen drove a model T Ford with Venetian blinds in the back windows. Her dogs were named King, Queen, Prince, and Princess. She often wore elaborate clothes from her Hollywood days, on Sundays. Some dresses were made of a brocade-like fabric and her coats were trimmed in fur. We adored her and couldn't believe a real movie star lived among us.

3 days before Christmas 1995, a kerosene heater in her house in Augusta, Georgia had malfunctioned and caught fire, Thelma “Butterfly” McQueen was burned over 70% of her body, and suffered second and third degree burns. She later died at a hospital later that night
