I can tell you as a professional cleaner that you do NOT want one! The glass sliding doors are the absolute worst to clean and so time consuming shuffling those doors back n forth, not to mention all the bathing products that get splashed on the door. They will literally only look clean right after you clean it and then the second you turn that water on...poof..all your hard work down the drain. The fixed doors aren't as bad if your shower head isn't too close to glass but I try to warn anyone considering them to not do it bc they will never remain clean. Some even have to keep squeegee in shower but that doesn't really help with the water spots after it dries, and who wants to think about squeegee after showering and trying to get ready. If I ever buy a house and see any glass in shower it will be the first thing I remove even if I have to rip it out myself..lol I blame HGTV for that utterly ridiculous trend.

@@missdhoopsI have one of those sliding doors for the first time ever (it was here when we moved in) and it’s SOOO dumb! Our water here is VERY hard, so that makes it worse than average, I think. Having a shower curtain never made me feel “un-fancy”, and it would be such an easier cleaning option!

Dana, as much as your 5-step process has changed my life-and it has-the heart of what I've learned from you is stop with the magical thinking. Magical thinking is actually what got my house into so much trouble to begin with. Stopping magical thinking was a very hard thing to do, but has been the most "impactful" thing in getting my house in order and KEEPING it in order. I wasted a lot of time thinking magic was the key and I needed to find the magic-but the "magic" was in doing the work.

After I switched from bar soap to body wash, my shower has stayed so much cleaner for so much longer too. It may not be an actual "trick" but it was a good "tip" that has worked well for me. It's the "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" ideology...and I'll take it!
@thesender6793Ай бұрын
I prefer a bar version, but definitely non-soap. Dove Beauty Bar and (I think) Olay Bar are in this category. Zest used to get you and your showerstall Zestfully clean until they changed their formula and are now just another soap. Caress recently changed their formula to soap, and received backlash for it. The more expensive “dermatologist approved” bars are also non-soap bars. They all rinse away so much better and more easily than soap.
@CeruleanPangolinАй бұрын
I've recently realized how the "Do the Dishes" strategy works on laundry too. Two smaller loads of laundry feel like less work to fold and put away than one larger load done less often, even if it's the exact same amount of laundry overall. So now I'm doing laundry more frequently and minding it less. Mind-blowing yet simple.

Probably the most disappointed I’ve been in any KZbin ever… Shower screens are the standard in the country where I live. The myths and broken promises as to how to keep them clean fill a very, very long aisle at the store. A genuine tip born of observing my mother: grow old. The older she gets, the less she doe and the less mess she makes, plus she qualifies for more hours of home care - and the cleaner her house becomes. And the dishes? The best thing to come out of a very low calorie diet is the stunning reduction in dirty dishes. Time to face facts: I am domestically doomed.

This is why I'll do a 1hr weekly cleaning blitz of our apartment as follows: 1. Put a load of laundry in (45min eco cycle). 2. Bleach the toilet + bathroom and kitchen sinks. 3. Spray any antibacterial cleaners / use disinfectants. 4. I'll use that 10min dwell time to handwash the dishes. 5. Wipe all the antibacterial/disinfectant cleaners down (I use Dettol multipurpose, so I don't have to rinse! Read the bottle directions). 6. I then have 30mins to speed dust and vacuum. (Not moving furniture, and surfaces are already pretty clear). 7. Then the laundry will be finished so I'll hang it up to dry. 8. By this time the bleach has had about 1hr to work, so I'll scrub & flush/rinse all the bleach. I deliberately DON'T stop, coz of "Autistic Inertia". Likewise, "never go empty handed" & "1min rule" are vital to have things put where they belong and clear surfaces to clean quickly. I can't just leave things til later / make it Tomorrow Me's problem.
@katoptron6583Ай бұрын
I think a "trick" or better a strategy is good when it makes the chores fit better into your scedule or matches your personality better as with laundry day vs "a load a day". Bending over a bath tub scrubbing, inhaling cleaning product and with my back protesting is such a no go for me that squeechying it every single time an spraying a little vinegar every now and again seems like magic to me...

I'm so glad that I watched this video today. I love your wisdom. I was listening to a flylady "crisis clean" video while I cleaned a couple of days ago. I was reminded of things she said so long ago that I had forgotten that resonate with what you've said here. When I started the "swish and swipe" habit (daily swish the toilet and swipe the rims and sink), my bathroom sink and toilet were never messy. She has said to always fill the kitchen sink with hot soapy water whenever you enter the kitchen. What a good habit! Hearing you say that the only way to never have a pile of dirty dishes is to do the dishes. I really needed to hear that. I love how you two probably accidentally say the same things. Both wise women. Her idea of using an ostrich feather duster works great, but only if you've cleaned and used your furniture polish or other cleaner to get the grime off first. Like the squeegee example, the magic of the ostrich feather only works on cleaned surfaces to keep the daily dust away and then, it stays clean. She does say, though, to do a load of laundry a day. So you differ on that. I get your reasoning, which is a very good reason, too. I'm glad you have differed from that because it helps so much. As I said before, this has been such a helpful video for me. You are the greatest Dana. Sorry for so long. I do have a QUESTION: (capitalized so you'll see it 😊): Do you have a good suggestion for a daily tip of keeping a shower curtain clean? I mean, it can't really respond well to a squeegee.
@katie7748Ай бұрын
Don't leave it all smooshed to one side. Close the curtain 3/4ths so it can "breathe." Less mold/mildew that way. Get a fabric curtain and liner. Wash curtain as needed. Wash liner as needed. In our house it's every 3-6mo for the curtain and about once a month for the liner to keep them both looking nice.
@marywiggins7411Ай бұрын
And shower curtain liners are cheap if you factor how many uses it gets compared to cost. I use old ones as paint drop cloths.
@BlueBird-nf2gpАй бұрын
I pull the curtain halfway closed to help it dry and use a bleach spray cleaner and rinse with water as needed.
@molee8863Ай бұрын
I spray down the Shower curtain & walls everyday after I've showered while in the shower & squeegee the shower walls. As someone mentioned, don't keep your shower curtain smooshed but spread it out so it can dry properly. Then once outside the tub, I use Tilex Daily Shower cleaner (or your cleaning product of choice) on it every daily. It keeps it cleaner longer, but you'll still have do the occasional maintenance with a good scrub & rinse 😊. No magic bullet here.

When we bought our house and considered the bathroom, we opted for a no curtain no glass shower over a large tub. It is nearly cleaning-free, since we have a Nordic wetroom - any floor splatter goes in the drain or dries or can be squeegeed to the drain to speed it up. But most of the water just runs into the (tall and wide) tub, and so long as we keep the tub clean (we use it as tub a lot so it gets cleaned regularly and that is easy), it always looks presentable.

The other important thing to remember is that a big once-in-awhile cleaning of your shower door, for example, is not only a huge amount of work, but it's never going to look as pristine as when you keep it from getting cruddy and stained in the first place. I know the point of this video is not specifically about squeegees, but I’ve got to say….. I think the problem with big ones is that it doesn’t have the same amount of pressure all along the blade. I found using 2 hands works well, one to hold the handle and the other to put extra pressure on one end of the blade. If you’re doing 2 swipes anyway, hopefully it will help putting extra pressure on opposite ends for the 2 swipes. (Disclaimer: I’ve only used this technique on windows which don’t swing open, I’ve not tried it on a shower door…. Please don’t push too hard and fall out of your shower!)

Doing the floor also helps keep mold away as it dries quickly.

Ettore, brass handle 18” squeegee has replaceable rubber edge, is what I use. I cleaned other people’s houses for many years. I’m 69 years old now and still use it.

This was helpful to understand persistence is the key. Also, the last trick is my favorite. I think my son uses it on me all of the time! 😂

Shower curtains are much easier to clean. Just throw them in the washer and hang to dry

I'm a huge fan of yours Dana. Do the dishes was a game changer for me. However much i don't want to do them I always get them done and leave an empty sink every night. Thank you for all your hints and suggestions and support xx❤

And here I was making sure to always be the last in the shower so it would actually get wiped down at the end of the day….your trick is so much more ‘magical’. ;) :)

I’ve have used enduroshield (in Australia) to protect glass, tiles and grout. Game changer. I also squeegee once or twice a week.

Next upgrade on the pool area cleaning: try a leaf blower instead of sweeping or shop vac'ing! Much less labor intensive... but there is a learning curve to make sure you don't blow dirt and debris *into* the pool. Keeping your back to the water works, just make sure you don't accidentally back up into the pool! 😅💦

I also use a squeegee and a microfiber cloth in glass shower doors. It’s been clean for years. My biggest trick is consistently dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning. Then it’s never a big deal.

I love your trick because it's a real trick! It's a good one! Also, thank you for correctly using the word further instead of farther :)

The trick I use for my large outdoor patio is a small leaf blower. I make my piles, shop vac and power wash.

The magic in this "tip/ trick" is having a husband and an adult child that will actually use the squeegee. That's the true magic. That magic doesn't exist in this home, unfortunately!

I know EXACTLY what you mean! However, might still work if one person does it every time. I used to wipe down the shower real quick even though my husband didn’t and it worked. However, I need to re-develop the habit, as I no longer did it when we moved!
@MissPickles1980Ай бұрын
@@r.a.fraley1616 This is reassuring. My husband is still functionally asleep until at least an hour after he showers, so getting him to wipe down the shower (or even step onto the mat instead of the floor when he gets out so there aren't any puddles!) is an exercise in futility most weekdays. So if it works at 50% wiping, I'll take it!

Sometimes, after I shower. I use my bath towel to wipe down the shower door. Then I put it in the washer. That makes it quicker to get the water off the glass doors.

I love all your videos Dana. They REALLY help me. I do just what you talked about, look for the "magic" trick that makes my dirty house clean. The truth definitely helps though. I just need to go do the dishes 😊.
