He's a legendary athlete, not a diplomat. He was targeted by the press because he wore a t-shirt with a questionable slogan and made a somewhat coarse jokey statement aimed at one of the Royal Family. It's childish to expect top sports stars to be faultless role models.

Magnificent athlete. Listed to both him and Steve Redgrave on TalkSport 2 for the Paris Olympics but sadly both of them were poor on the microphone, neither have an engaging voice. Thompson needs to be honoured to a higher lever.
