I felt like an impostor when I went back to school to study accounting as my major... I was never great at math and I was convinced I was going to fail.... But I studied my ass off, did study groups, surrounded myself with like minded students..... and now I have a 3.7 GPA.... and BTW when I took accounting 101 when I got my management degree a few years ago, I got a C.

That is so great to hear. That is what it is about. You felt like an imposter, but you pushed forward anyway and compensated with hard work! Students of color can be successful, but they need to mirror your mindset! Well done!

I’m starting medical school this fall, and although it’s just a small DO school, I’m proud to be a future doctor. Being black and coming from a single-parent household, I understood that people would have negative thoughts and opinions towards me. However, I never fell into becoming a victim. I’m a successful because of my background and who I am, not despite it. This message is for anyone who feels disadvantaged. Enjoy the journey and take pride in it. Thank you Dr. Pinesett.

Hi Dr. what do you think about someone pursuing medicine at 27?
@a.stewart75544 жыл бұрын
You are still young! Go for it!

Sis, I'm 30 years old and I'm just starting to apply. I'm pursuing medicine because I can't see myself doing anything else. Dr. P will also tell you that you are not too old. You can do it!

Some insight I got from studying sociology for the MCAT last year... Affirmative action is a good thing. We need more african american doctors. There's an out-group bias and institutional discrimination against the african american patients. If we had more African American doctors that would alleviate this problem. Hence, affirmative action. Besides, it's not like they're accepting people just because they're black, the people they accept are well qualified. We all know darn well how hard it is to get into medical school. Being black doesn't change that. Furthermore, there is a poverty loop in this country. What do I mean by that? People with low SES are more likely to have poor health in the future. They even did this study with nuns, who had the exact same lifestyle since their 20s, but their SES from their childhood was positively correlated with their in their health in their 90s (this was on the half-length practice exam). There's other studies that poverty at a young age, can trigger epigenetic factors that correlate negatively with IQ. Hence we get social reproduction. We need programs like affirmative action and other social welfare programs to lift people out of economic crisis and towards a brighter future.

We need to give disadvantaged people more opportunities and helping them grow into the students they were meant to be.
@steve198112 жыл бұрын
Dude, affirmative action lowers standards for black Americans so you have less qualified blacks going into and going through the system. Affirmative action disadvantages them completely.... and creates more stereotypes they're not qualified....

I don't know how to thank you for showing us the way Dr. P, seriously may God/universe (whoever you believe in) continue to bless you with success!

Only person I know that is actually helping students who are disadvantaged to get them where they need to go. Stop following posers and listen to dr.p.

exactly! I don't even watch med student youtube channels anymore, because they do is tell their story but they can't tell you how they got through the MCAT or really breaking down the application process.
