Elsa isn't dead. She was saved by the spirits after Anna broke the dam. And then Elsa reveals to Anna that they are BOTH the 5th spirit, because the 5th spirit is the bridge between humanity and magic. Like you said, Anna is the human side, hence why she's the new queen of Arendelle. Elsa is the magical side of the bridge, hence why she's living with the spirits now. The 2 sisters are meant to ensure harmony will be sustained between the 2 sides.

The original script has Elsa not only die, but also had Arendelle flooded. Anna’s song The Next Right Thing was dramatic bc it foreshadowed that she had truly lost everything but she needed to go on for her people’s future. But Disney thought it was too dark so they didn’t specify that Elsa was “dead” but was a “spirit” and she acted as the deus ex machina to stop the flood. Hence the strangeness why Elsa chose to stay behind.

This theory makes no sense, she fully became the fifth spirit, with dress change and everything, before freezing. With Anna destroying the dam, she came back. Anna became the Queen, not because Elsa couldn't, but because she never really wanted to be the queen. Elsa fell in love with the enchanted forest at first sight, because she realized that's her real place where she belongs, so she chooses to stay there.

Y’all are so caught up on the “she didn’t die” thing but I don’t understand why that’s such a controversial way to phrase it. If they didn’t do the right thing, she would have functionally been dead. Same with Anna in the first movie. Love thaws but the movie made a point of showing that love can be given but only makes an impact if it is received. If Elsa didn’t internalize how Anna’s sacrificed herself to protect her as an act of love and acknowledge that her running away actually hurt her loved ones, Anna would have remained frozen AND the country would have remained in eternal winter. Elsa only died temporarily. Olaf dies when Elsa freezes but comes back to life when the sisters reunited towards the end of the film. Elsa told Anna in a letter that she would be there for family game night also at the end of the movie. Although when Anna said Elsa gave her life for the truth, she didn't know it was temporarily/if she was brought back to life yet.
