It’s interesting from an historical perspective that you would make a link in perception in modern culture between plantations and slavery and Junipero Serra. The President, the one man besides Junipero Serra who is responsible for the existence today of these beautiful places of worship and integral parts of California history is Abraham Lincoln. In the midst of a nightmarish civil war he had the foresight to sign a presidential decree to preserve and restore the missions of California. Two men of different denominations both dedicated to ensuring dignity and freedom for all people, those missions stand as a tribute to the fight for individual liberty.

We’re facing an opposition with a signal motive-wipe all religion off the face of the planet, starting with easiest to kill, the sheep. This movement is militant in its atheism, and the core tenant of his belief system is that religion is the problem, yet they have no moral objections to murder in the name of “good,” and they’re perfectly comfortable with that solution. They’re unwaveringly convinced that they would be saving the world, and that they must do so. Rational arguments aren’t going to work here. @@suzannespanier4492 I need to be more skeptical and cynical. It is so good to be an atheist where you do not have to worry about these things. I feel God has a higher calling for His followers. @@IONov990 Be always happy, notwithstanding what happens. God permits all these things for our own good. He knows how to draw good out of evil. One mortal sin is far worse than if we were to destroy all the religious statues in the whole world. Jesus died for us. He was killed. Notwithstanding this, most of those who took an active part in his passion and death are now in heaven. So, let's be always positive by loving God as much as we can. On account of this I’m publishing a weekly KZbin video on episodes from the life of Don Bosco, entitled ST JOHN BOSCO by JOE ZAMMIT. In this series I’m narrating events and miracles from the splendid life of Don Bosco. St John Bosco used to perform a miracle almost every day, through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. From the lives of saints we can learn how to love God more and draw closer to him. Thank you

Hey, Bishop Barron! Absolutely love your show! I know many traditional Catholics who say all types of things about you, when it comes to salvation to non-Catholics and being too liberal and going against Church's teachings. Could you please make a video or any statements where you can clear this up? Because many traditional Catholics have this opinion on you. God bless you Bishop!

Good Bishop. Good is called Evil and Evil is called Good. Time for constant dialogue is over. It is time to take a side and use your platform to denounce all those that attack the Church and the Laity that have been entrusted to you. This goes for all attacks not just against this saint that can not be touched by any evil.

As Ojibwa who was adopted out to white protestants by Catholic Social Services (before Roe v Wade) and who later converted to Catholicism, this whole discussion around the missions and the boarding schools, is tearing me apart. There is nothing more important to me than my faith. Yet I can’t deny my heritage either. I feel I’m being forced to choose as the rhetoric ramps up. Even in this video, you laughed when you said “genocide.” I understand that St Junipero was not guilty of genocide. But so many Catholics are white washing the genocide that did occur. The Church did have a part to play in it, even if it was a complicated part. I give the Church great respect for thinking the indigenous had souls at a time when other colonizers didn’t. But I’ve had church women look at me and say “the United States never committed a genocide!!” Or “The Indians should be grateful.” Or “The Church did nothing wrong.” None of that is true. Horrible atrocities were committed, especially in the boarding schools. It’s killing me trying to defend my Church to indigenous when things like that are being said by Catholics. If you have a chance to make a video addressing this, I would be deeply grateful. There are indigenous Catholics. We are really suffering. I live in rural Minnesota. I’m the only indigenous in my parish cluster. But I’m most certainly not the only indigenous in my town. It’s hard to remain steadfast without wearying.

Brother, as a Brazilian guy, I understand that digesting past events of our history can be challenging and sometimes even disturbing. They can bring anguish, sometimes anger. I feel nothing but empathy with the Ojibwa nation’s sufferings. But the fact is that the Ojibwa were never on the area of missions held on by Saint Junipero Serra, which were on the Spanish-Mexican California, and he was the one being accused of genocide and similar calumnies. There is no registers that accounts for Spanish missionaries being related to southern Canada and northern Midwestern United States missions, even less of St Junipero Serra having anything to do with that. I am simply getting to the facts, not dismissing the sensibilities. The decimation of indigenous populations happened in many countries but probably it was much more intense on areas where Protestantism was majoritarian. Where Catholicism was stronger, political tensions between religious orders and politics were stronger too due to the fact that the Church was against the political forces most of the times; but the ethnic register of those peoples are much more relevant precisely on Catholic countries. Just take a look at USA/Canada: if any true ethnic relevance of indigenous population can be found still in those countries' DNA heritage, still I guess it would be on territories with a substantial Catholic component. Being a Latin American I should ask: have you ever been to Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia or Mexico (for example)? Of course indigenous populations were victimized by the colonizers in many aspects but still we had the Franciscan, Dominicans and specially the Jesuits to bravely protect them, as fallibly as things can be. We could never say "ethnic cleansing" is true for Catholics as it is may be for WASP North Americans, as far as missions (or lack of) or all integral religious components go; still we don’t see Protestantism getting blamed. Again, I say this without throwing stones at our separated brothers, I am getting to the facts. Take a look at Bartolomé de las Casas and how he bravely fought against the Spanish crown. Take a look at St José de Anchieta (St Joseph of Anchieta), the “Apostle of Brazil”, a Spanish Jesuit missionary working with the Portuguese colonizers, and the founder of many cities in my country, just as the city of São Paulo: the largest city of Latin America, the largest city of the southern hemisphere, the largest city of the West. St José de Anchieta dared to evangelize the indigenous people with sermons and works of charity but first he was responsible for creating and cataloguing an entire grammar of “Tupi-Guarani”, the language spoken by the majority of Brazilian tribes. If one only really feels bad about the history of Catholic missions, please expand horizons to double check the information. That's the least we can do under the imperative of justice. Whatever happened on those lands, all sinful people (and religious missionaries included) should be blamed - under the circumstances of time and culture - for their behavior, but maybe it would be harsh to satanize them and "sanitize" their heritage. As Catholics, the saints are the precious ones who lived the heroic Christian virtues and are partakers of divine glory in the Heavenly Jerusalem. I guess it would be barely true that French-Quebecois Catholic missionaries only did harm to indigenous populations, but still it is objectively untrue that those on the polemical side of those missions were canonized Catholic saints and we are defending anyone's deeds. St Junipero Serra was (rectius: is) a saint, a canonized saint. So I guess you could understand what Bishop Barron means in saying St Junipero Serra is being calumniated. He fought for the indigenous peoples’ dignity at the price of facing political menace and persecution. He led many people to Christ, and if there are any places where ethnicity can show the indigenous heritage in “America’s DNA” in a true important level and identity, it is exactly on former territories filled with large Catholic missions (California and Texas, for example) that were incorporated later into the USA. Double check how many cities were named after Catholic saints! Now we are facing the cancellation of Catholic heroic people and the re-writing of history. Of course not always the evangelization of indigenous peoples were softcore, whenever we see it from the angle of Catholics, but if we bite the attacks as just war, where would us really stop in defending our faith? Truth above everything. Jesus Christ, who is Truth, above all.

@@brunot2481 I agree with everything you said. I can't speak to the missions, and perhaps my comment should be placed under a video about the boarding schools here in the northern US and Canada. But I'm not aware of such a video by Bishop Barron, and was requesting that it be made. I respect his voice and reasoned approach. While much of the blame for the bodies in the mass graves here can be laid at the feet of the Canadian government (in my own estimation - NOT the estimation of the indigenous here, who most assuredly blame the Church), the fact is that the Catholic Church ran those schools. The crowding, lack of adequate health care, lack of nutritious food, etc increased the number of children who died. They were forcibly removed from their families. Plus, the concentration of vulnerable children attracted predators. I am aware that Protestant churches were as much of a contributor to this, if not more. But I'm not Protestant anymore. I don't have to defend that faith to anyone. Most importantly, their collective sins don't touch me as deeply as the stories I hear of priests and nuns torturing these kids. You hear these first hand accounts of MK Ultra and electric chairs and sexual abuse, and they rip my heart out because sometimes the link between the priests and nuns and these atrocities is extremely clear. In all fairness, sometimes the link is not clear at all and appears to be blatant conflation which is perpetuated by anti-Catholic rhetoric. I should probably read "Letter To A Suffering Church." It's probably still too early to know all the details of what happened in those boarding schools. But my understanding - and this could be incorrect - was that similar overcrowding and lack of nutrition and healthcare occurred at the missions, resulting in more deaths than would have been necessary by the introduction of diseases from the West. But that's not my main concern, as I don't understand the history of the area very well, and therefore don't have much context in which to place such accusations. I of course believe that Junipero Serra was a saint and should be celebrated as such. Everyone should know the truth about him and all priests who fought for indigenous. And I know that there are saints from my area of North America as well. I've read first hand accounts (I volunteer in the parish library and I find these old things sometimes) of priests walking with the tribes as they were rounded up by the US government and forced to walk onto the reservations for the first time. The priests then said mass for them there, and just ... stayed - out of love and generosity of spirit and a desire to help the people they loved in any way they could. But then as some things get revealed, we are learning that there's some hagiography at play too, at least in some of the lesser known saints and venerables from this area. Then that makes me feel like I'm on unsteady ground and I don't know what to believe anymore. Perhaps I just need to be patient until the facts are all known, but that looks like it will take years or decades. I'm suffering until then. I mean, I'm offering it up as a sacrifice, but my heart sure does hurt.
