This was my mum’s and my first time in Kamikochi! 🏔️There are ways to make the trip cheaper: 1) book early, 2) stay for just one night, and 3) consider camping. Our costs were higher because we booked only two weeks in advance, so most of the cheaper options were already sold out 🥲 While you can make this a day trip from Matsumoto, I’m glad we spent three days around the area, as the river’s appearance changes drastically with the weather. The first day at Sawando was cloudy, the second was sunny, and the third turned cloudy again. Personally, I think it’s SO much nicer when the weather is clear! If you want to increase your chances of good weather, I’d definitely recommend staying at least one night 😊👍

Sarah, great video, it has so much useful information. I'm curious, why didn't you drive the rent a car to Kamilochi? I'm thinking on doing your trip the fall of 25. Thanks!!!

Thanks for the question! I said it very briefly at 1:35, but they don’t allow cars to go directly to Kamikochi! It’s to minimize pollution. So the only way to get there is by bus or taxi 👍

Love the pure natural scenery! For long hikes, I recommend wearing compression calf sleeves. They work and the walker wouldn’t get sore calf muscles.

Loved the mom interactions you included in the edit. I saw some foreigners in the background of this video. It looks quite accessible to foreign travelers. The bus website had translations in English to purchase tickets. Did you find the local businesses could cater to non-Japanese speaking people? Thanks for sharing.

There were quite a few tourists from outside of Japan! I saw a souvenir shop staff and a restaurant staff talking to customers in English so I think they’re very used to foreign tourists!

That was an excellent video! I don't know if you have been to Lake Tahoe, Yellowstone, or Yosemite, but if your travels ever take you to the United States, I have no doubt you would enjoy hiking in those amazingly scenic destinations. I had never heard of Kamikochi until your video, for which it truly has great natural beauty, replete with....monkeys! Very well done, and I thank you for sharing.

I’ve never been to the places you listed! The monkeys here were so chill. In other parts of Japan they’re aggressive but here they were jut cute 😍 Glad you enjoyed the video!

@@TokyoFoodieSarah If you do travel to the United States, Lake Tahoe, which is about a 4-5 hour drive from San Francisco is amazingly scenic. The lake is at an elevation of 6200 feet, and is surrounded by mountains, with great hiking. Yellowstone might be our most famous national park, and is mostly in Wyoming, and Yosemite is also an incredibly beautiful national park in California. Wishing you the very best with all of your touring and videos. PS...yes, the monkeys were very cute!

We visited Kamikoochi sometime ago in a summer time, and it was beautiful then, though rather busy. I thnk mama meant tranquil... meaning quiet and peaceful 😁

I bet it would be beautiful in the summer as well 🤩 Haha yes it’s funny how she thought of the Spanish word before English 🤣

Funny your mom knows more Spanish than English. 😂Tranquilo is tranquil in English, both meaning the same (calm, quiet) and it's not a far leap in difference in spelling. It sure costs a lot to get away from crowds and then you find everyone else is there to escape... crowds. 🤷♂😂
@TokyoFoodieSarah2 ай бұрын
She learnt Spanish at university! 🤣 I’m so glad I didn’t go there over the long weekend 😱
