Safes are a time machine. The time you can make a thief spend to get into it is the time you have to respond. But you have to know when the timer starts so first line on defense is a surveillance or security system.

Great video. If a safe company does not advertise their components, run, don’t walk away. I researched safes and had a Sturdy Safe built for me, 72” high, 42” wide, with 4, yep, that’s right 4 gauge, that’s just short of 1/4” walls, top and bottom, 3/8” door, with a stainless steel plate over the lock mechanism, AND a hardened steel plate in front of the lock mechanism. You can’t shove a dime anywhere between the door and the sides of the safe. I did change the S&G lock it came with for a SecuRam Extreme

I purchased on the fly some aluminum wheel locks for a construction trailer. I later thought that was pretty stupid to buy aluminum, yet alone make one out of aluminum. That was until someone tried to cut it off… Aluminum, made the right way, can clog/gum up a metal cutting wheel quite quickly, especially so, the faster ya try to cut through it. It’s doable, but not near as easy as steel.

As a retired Sheet Metal Worker, I can say that no safe under 1/2" thick is as good as a well designed home security system and a police force with good reaction time. I could cut through a 1/4" steel side wall in 10 minutes with a grinder and the appropriate grit wheels. Once the first groove in the steel is punched completely through, the grinder makes easy work of the steel. A safe should be looked at as a barrier for children and fire. A great home security system should be the way you protect the contents of the safe. If safe manufacturers went to a thin sheet of titanium on the outside of the steel, that would help prevent infiltration before adding to the thickness of steel. Titanium destroys cutting wheels, you need a much higher temperature to plasma cut titanium and it poses more significant challenges to get through. Of course it would add $10,000 to the cost of a small safe. Honestly, we are just trying to gain time until the police arrive with a safe. There are very few difference between safe manufactures. Unless your a company giving codes out to the f'ing ATF or FBI.
@JimmyLeeTennessee
@JimmyLeeTennessee 10 ай бұрын
You could cut through it in 2 minutes with a Oxy-Acetylene torch... But most thieves arent carrying that around, and it would be quite noticeable if so. With a standard angle grinder, you're not cutting through a 1/4 thick safe in 10 minutes. You may cut one line, but now you need two more. Then you still have to bend the metal down and dig through the sheet rock. I do totally agree with the rest of your comments though. A safe is a deterrent- but the thicker the safe, the longer it takes to make entry. Thanks for watching!

Also, look at it this way, the chance of somebody breaking into my house and bypassing the alarm system would be like hitting you lottery. Any safe can be broken into it’s just a matter of time. My cost for the safe is my lifetime of feeling secure about my guns and it is fire protected for 110 minutes and by then the fire will be put out, hopefully LoL. Problem is, who is going to hear tools running in a house at 2 PM while the owner is at work and is going to think "home invasion" rather than think "renovations." People imagine burglaries being a dude in a ski mask with a black and white striped shirt rather than a dude who looks like a run of the mill guy smashing a back window in the late morning as most residents of the neighborhood is at work or school. Alarm systems are important in that most people aren't going to assume broad daylight criminal activity is going to happen as brazenly as it does and so recognizing it as a crime happening to someone else's home isn't something to be relied upon.

Ok I do have a question, everyone is acting like that first outside layer is all that's there, go to a liberty dealer most of them have the cutaway safe showing the layers. 14 gauge outside steel 1/2 inch fire board and another layer of 14 gauge steel. And the torch thing is something from movies, if you start torching on a safe the the 1600 to 2000 degree molten steel will catch the carpet on fire inside. And no body is going to lug a oxygen acetylene torch rig around to brake in a house. Buy as you said yes if someone wants in bad enough there getting in. But no commen home invasion is someone taking the time to get in any decent safe it makes to much noise and takes to long.

Clicking on the safe of your interest on the Liberty website and then scrolling down to "models and sizing" and the steel gauge is plainly stated. Do you want the safes listed by gauge? Explore their website a little more thoroughly maybe. Does Homeland use U.S. made steel? They claim that the safes are of American manufacture but I see no claim that their steel is American. Possibly imported steel, typically lesser quality, is used by some safe makers. There are certainly more factors in safe construction than gauge. Homeland states that they are a "American manufacturer" . That could mean that their office is in the U.S. but I didn't see that the safes are actually built in the U.S. of U.S. steel. Liberty states so on both counts.

If you think that going from 12 gauge steel to 7 gauge steel is going increase the time it takes to cut through your safe will increase to 30 min up to an hour you are delusional. Take that safe to any trade school shop and ask them to cut a hole in the side of it. 5 min or less easily
@JimmyLeeTennessee
@JimmyLeeTennessee Жыл бұрын
If you think that thicker material isn't harder to cut through, then you're delusional. You will NOT be cutting into my safe with an angle grinder in 5 minutes unless it's massive, and even then it's going to be making so much noise you will be in jail before you ever get in.
@CR1125Buell09
@CR1125Buell09 Жыл бұрын
@@JimmyLeeTennessee you got me, I might own all of the tools you mentioned in the video and run a fabrication shop knowing how long it takes to cut through different thickness of steel. Yes it may take longer but not 30min to an hour to cut into your safe. But how does it making noise cutting it or the fact you have a security system really play into the equation. Would be the same with 7 or 12 gauge steel, just a bit longer in time. It doesn't matter what gauge steel, it's all a false since of security without the security system, building walls around it and bolting it down. Also the chance you or the police are close enough to make it there in time to stop it.
@JimmyLeeTennessee
@JimmyLeeTennessee Жыл бұрын
@CR1125Buell09 if you run a fabrication shop, then you know that 7 gauge steel is 5.59x stronger than 12 gauge. So to suggest it would be the same- no way. There is a HUGE difference in the time it takes to cut. You can't just cut it in 2 lines and bend it, then reach inside- like you could with 12 gauge. You would have to cut a full square out, or near it. That adds time. Regardless, you are correct. Layered security is needed no matter what kind of box you have. Any safe can be cut into, period.... But the thicker the better.
@CR1125Buell09
@CR1125Buell09 Жыл бұрын
@@JimmyLeeTennessee I agree that thicker is better, but where did I say 7 and 14 gauge is the same? Said it would take longer, read it again. You can use the same tools to cut into each, also strength does not apply to how long it takes to cut. That is where you are mistaken, double thickness double cut time. It is still the same material, yes you may have to cut most of 4 sides instead 3 sides and bending it(which equals time I agree). Best bet is to hide safe and build it in. Don't place in a garage and think someone can't bust your door down and wrap a cable around it and rip it out. The concrete will bust up or just rip bolts through bottom. Just to be clear the manufacturer of the safe you have has many safes with 12 gauge steel just the same as Liberty, and both offer thicker steel for more money. You are just being misleading comparing box store safes (some lower end Libertys) to yours which is 2x to 3x more money. Kinda the same when you get into more of the thicker gauge Liberty, Fort Knox, Browning, Champion safes. For a safe the size of yours with its features, its not far off, now as far as warranty, and other add ons, it is definitely one to look at. But that is why you have more than one company making safes and none of them are burglar or fireproof, just different levels and ways to slow them down.

@CR1125Buell09 I never compared them to a box-store safe. I was explaining how Liberty Safe is drastically misleading people, by not disclosing how paper-thin their walls are. 5 thousand dollars for 10 or 12 gauge steel.🥴

Everything you said wasn't, it's kind of like saying guns kill people and they don't a gun is a paperweight and a non-living object, people kill people. But you can kill people with the very air you breath, ejection. When I lived in Tx thieves went to a house in a ritzy neighborhood and broke in while the people were on vacation. The owner had a $50, ooo dollar security system door alarms, window alarms you name it. The thieves posed as roofers and even spoke with the neighbors, they cut their way in through the roof bypassing the system and cut their way into the #3 safes with torches. . Where there's a will there is a way. Never got caught either. Another guy went around talking to a guys neighbors picking up on nicknames stories and bits and pieces of information about him. Then came back the next day and spoke with the guy's son who was selling the farm tractor for his dad. Acting like he had known him all his life and throwing out the info. The kid took a check, and the guy and man's son loaded the tractor on the trailer and left N.C. They never caught him either. Some thieves aren't as stupid as you may think. The worst part is the guy stopped the insurance on his $50,000 tractor because he was selling it. I feel sorry for the son. I bet his dad went haywire. Peace.

E: why would I risk igniting the interior of the safe on fire by using a torch when I'm trying to preserve its contents? G: My insurance (geico) only pays up to 1500 dollars to replace guns from theft regardless if how many I have. Just saying. Thanks.

@@JimmyLeeTennessee State farm replaces per gun. But what we do is we have a list, cost ,pic of receipt model type and serial no# and pics as well. And we have a real safe. Yea Geico is cheap, but you get what you pay for. I'd call State Farm if you have a few. I have #32 so Geico isn't going to work for me. You'll play hell opening a Liberty with a pry bar. And a battery powered cutter won't work on a Liberty unless you bring about #4-5 spare batteries with you. I called a buddy of mine at the sheriff's office and he got back with me and said he had never seen any safe cut into using a grinder. Since he's been on duty. He said 99% of break-ins the big boys were left alone. He said the Wal-Mart little safes were a different story, he said they steal them all the time. I guess that's why Liberty replaces big boys if they do for free because it almost never happens. Just in the movies. Charlie said can you imagine a home invader breaking in and then trying to cut into a safe with a grinder ""he said"" do you think they are going to fix lunch and pull up a chair and get comfortable for the long job??? He just laughed and laughed. He said thieves are in constant motion running to and from and then gone. He said they are scared out of their minds because they know the owner or neighbor can show up any time. It's get what you can get of value and gone like their ass is on fire. He did say most never get caught though. He said it's the same with car break ins. I live rural not in the city. We all watch each others backs. My brother and cousin live next to us and my other neighbor Dan is very cool. We have almost 0% crime. We have hanging judges here. They look down their noses at crime . And like throwing the book at criminals . People know to go to the city to commit crime . Winchester makes the worst safe in my opinion. Maybe you can pry it open ,but never a Liberty. Plenty of YT videos of people trying though. But none do it. Peace.

@The Big Fellar I've actually cut into a safe with an m18 angle grinder to test my theory, but whatever you think man. Liberty safes are only 11 to 14 gauge steel, and that's paper-thin. Check into it if you don't believe me. It took me 2 and a half minutes to cut a 6 inch square out of 12 gauge steel safe. That's why I went with 7 gauge steel in another brand. As far as prying into their newer models- its not going to happen; but definitely possible on the older ones using a 5 foot pry bar. Bottom line, I'm not going to sit here and argue with you and your buddy the safe expert who works at the sheriff's department. You guys can think whatever you want its fine with me. You've spoken your peace and I've said mine. Anything more will not be fruitful, as I can see that you have already formed your opinions on everything. This video was not meant for people who have already formed their opinions, it was meant more as an educational video to expose liberty's weaknesses.

@@JimmyLeeTennessee No need getting defensive dude. As you said you made your point, I expressed mine. Don't go getting all sckitzed out one me. Andy has been with the sheriff's department over 25 years. And he has never once ever seen a burglary where a safe was ever cut into by flame or cutter. Valid point is thieves are not in it for the long run and they don't bring a truck full of tools to rob homes. Nor do they spend the time. I'm sure if it was a safe for a jewelry company or bank that would be a horse of a different color. But your normal everyday robber, it isn't going to happen. And if you look at bestselling safes Liberty is the clear winner for a reason, they make good safes for your average run of the mill people. So if you want to believe that someone is going to bring a 5-foot long prybars and cutting tools and extension cords and equipment along to rob houses. More power to you. I didn't mean or intend to piss on your parade. And I meant no harm so take a chill pill and loosen up that grip on your teddy bear jeeze...!!! Peace.

@The Big Fellar I never said they were going to bring a truck load of tools? What I was emphasizing, is that you can get a more secure safe for the same amount of money. I don't know why you are getting so personal over this. You must have a liberty safe. I wish you would stop trying to end my parade. I have a whole celebration planned that is centered around this video. I pretty much base my life and all I stand for on this video. I can't stand any amount of criticism and this video has a very special place in my heart. You are deeply hurting me right now... 🥺😂

A circular saw with a Diablo cutting blade will cut a 1/4” I-beam in 3 minutes or less. At this point cutting technology has out paced safe technology.

You're not wrong! If someone shows up with a serious tool you have issues. Good news is that most thieves don't have them. It's all about layered security.

There are some with layers of materials that are very difficult to cut. Those features come at a cost though. Look at the Fort Knox Legend with a layer of AR500 (no drilling or cutoff wheels) and a layer of stainless steel (no torches)

Liberty is owned by Monomoy Capital Partners, a private equity firm. Cutting costs and moving volume of products is how they have become a $64 million company. Their product lineup and distribution model is very similar to Browning/Pro-Steel safes; they have nationwide retailers like Coastal, Cabelas, Sportsman’s Warehouse, and Tractor supply as well as localized full line dealers and locksmith shops. The Lincoln and Presidential are 10ga and 7ga respectively which line up with the upper half of the Browning product lines and bottom 1/3 of the Fort Knox product lines. Anything thinner than 12 ga is an easy target since they are generally light weight (depending on size) and have lower quality locking mechanisms. When deciding what to buy, the 2 most important considerations are volume and value of contents. A good rule of thumb is to spend 10-15% of the value of the contents on the safe (that of course is dependent on risk tolerance).
