The majority of native greeks are orthodox, but there are also native greek muslims and other religions as well. the greek orthodox church plays an important role in the greek state, but there is freedom of religion in greece. Legally, religion doesn't limit the chances of getting a job, nor the rights to own property etc. P.S. gyros is considered mostly as 'street food'. it's easy to get, tasty, but in no way a traditional greek 'homemade-like' food.

As a native Greek my self you were very accurate with your facts about Greece but I personally have never seen any discrimination against Americans or anything related to it! You are right that you sed, that some parts of Athens are pretty dangerous not only for Tourists but for Greeks as well. I want to add that we call Greece Hellas and not Greece because the word Greek comes from the word Γραικός and most people in Greece think that this is a disdainful word that ottomans (Turkish) called us in the almost 400 year period which the ottoman empire had enslaved Greece after the fall of Constantinople, but actually that is not true ! The world Greek is more than 13 centuries old which is older that the word Hellenic! Today the official name of Greece is Hellenic Republic.

hi greek here! awsome video! Really glad you enjoyed your time in Greece. I wanna say something about the Greek/Hellenic. it ain't about the Helen of Troy (similar sound but different word). Hellenics were named in general all the tribes in the Greek cities/states and kingdoms. There are many theories what The word means. Most popular theory is a combination of 2 ancient words which practically means the land of sun and rocks/mountains. Grecians were one Hellenic tribes that went to south Italy and created colonies there. So western people known them as Greeks. Most eastern countries like Turkey they call Greece as Yunan Again from another Hellenic tribe Ionians which were created colonies in the east. Nowadays the official name of the country is the Hellenic republic.

06:52 - Ouzo is indded a the nationaldrink of Greece, however, it found in many other countries in the region. - Not all ouzo brands are the same, most you are not able to drink, that is the reason we add water, Only 'Plomari' and 'Barbayiannis' are worth the price. - Ouzo is made with 'anise seeds' and it takes the taste from the anise seeds.

For me as a Greek, I think Hellines-(Greeks, As we called in English) are also the people you love and are passionate with Greece. There are also Greeks who don't love and don't support our culture and religion. These are no Greeks for me. A lot of politicians in Greece are against Greece. I see how much you love my country and I am proud of you, because you take the time to getting know this beautiful country. Thank you for your kind words. So I am from Thessaloniki and from what I know about the White Tower was that it was alegedly painted red by the blood of the prisoners that were executed there. It was actually created after the Ottomans got hold of the city and it was used as a prison for Greeks.

Good video. I’m not Greek but my parents are. As an American with Greek roots and name I’ve always enjoyed visiting Greece in my youth including staying at my Grandparents house and the food is pretty good but on the sweet side for my taste. I prefer more spicy and a burn. First time I tried Korean and Asian foods I fell in love. The beaches in Greece are absolutely beautiful. Great place to visit.

The Greeks call themselves Hellenes. In the ancient time, there were the city states like Athens, Thebes and others. The Greeks when they assembled in the intercity councils to decide politics, collectively refered to themselves as Hellenes. Our ancestors considered themselves with their city in mind first, and collectively as Hellenes second.

Actually it does not have something to do with The Helen of Troy. Hellas simply is the direct translation of the word "Ελλάδα" (Greek for Greece) and, since my country's official name is "Hellenic Republic" we don't really like the word Greece. Also, being slaved for 400 years by Turks, there are all shorts of funny names they have invented to call us and it just so happens that Greeks is one of them.

Thank you for being so respectful and most of it was very accurate, but man were you wrong about the power of church :p ...... orthodoxy is an important part of our tradition and all but it is not particularly influential in every day life, let alone not getting a job if you are not one .... i m an atheist and we are a large percentage of the population, there is no oppression or anything .... Also you probably visited Exarheia or something like that were the anarchist collectives are, they are the only ones who do not like americans...

I am from there but I won't say is the most beautiful place. it is spectacular but if you go more north west in Epirus or Chalkidiki or the ionian island they are so unique and special. About greeks is wrong. We don't mind the word greeks. Greeks is the oldest word of greek people before the Hellenization ( Alexander the great unify the greek states) from that point Greece was united in one and fight against Persia ;-) Let's say Hellenic is the latest and modern name of Greece ;-)

Religion does not affect your life in Greece. Sure in the majority we are orthodox but that's it. Also, I would like to point out about the "fiesta" thing, we hate it. First of all, not all shops are closed. Big markets or restaurants or convenience stores and many others are open. For the stores that are closing, that gap from 3pm to 5pm is a nightmare. One of the reasons that this exists is that we are not a big market and most of the time shop owners cannot afford to have two shifts. So we have that 3-5 break for the employee to get some rest. And during these two hours, we have to go home, pick up the kids from school, prepare launch and go back to work. There is no sleeping at all. Trust me. Going back and forth to work is awful. It absorbs your whole day and you can't do anything else. WE HATE IT. I really enjoy your video btw. Lots of love from Crete!

I could eat creme bougatsa everyday. Tsipouro is better than ouzo imo. That fish dish sounds horrid. People dislike Americans so much around the world I started speaking in broken English when I worked in Thailand.

Now, we may not like Americans too much, because of the 7 year junta we had that was engineered and supported by the US, as well as the wars that the US has been making, ever since WW2, and recently next to us, in the North, in old Yugoslavia. Greeks are mostly pacifists. But that is not against American citizens! 1. Hellas, Hellenic, has nothing to do with Helen - notice the numbers of Ls there. The origin of the name holds many possible explanations, one of them, that one man, Ellinas, was the progenitor of a large family that ended up inhabiting a large part. 2. If we hated Americans, we wouldn't all try to speak English. Most of us try ... not all, but everyone will try and communicate in English a bit ... 3. The church hasn't got that much power, not is necessary to be Orthodox to get a job. It should have even less, but it's linked with many traditions etc. 4. Hope you come back again ! Polla filia !
