The conversation starting from 10:30 is such an important one. Whether it be sexual assault or rape, people fear saying the words, people fear being the victim of that. It seems like such an outer worldly thing that should never happen with someone you trust, in a situation you "put yourself in". That's why it takes people so long to register that it even occurred because if it wasn't a white van, dark alley situation, if you had a connection with the person, you take some responsibility of the situation and it takes far too long for people to realize that it's not their fault, and it was rape, it was sexual assault. We try to sugarcoat it because if it doesn't fit the scary rape/sexual assault stranger narrative, we are made to feel like it wasn't real, that we are at fault for feeling how we feel.

This comment describes exactly what I am currently going through. If I may ask, How do you stop blaming yourself? I constantly blamed myself for “putting” myself in dangerous and unsafe situations when in reality it really wasn’t my fault. I am so angry at them and don’t know how to let it go after I realized what happened.

Shan, you're great. You're very confident and tbh that's a shocker to many people. Seeing a woman who is extremely comfortable and confident talking about sex and similar topics scares some people, it's not normal to their basic minds that a woman be so "bold". That's their problem. I hope one day they get it. Funny how bold they feel behind their screens, in the safety of their rooms. Keep killing it, you're one of my top fav. KZbinrs. x

You think she is confident? Based on what? She just told you that her past sex life was miserable and it wasn't her fault. Confident people don't have regrets about their sex lives. Confident people are in control of their sex lives. They don't just let "sex" happen to them. They desire it and have orgasms from partnered sex. They don't blame other people or are victims for their bad sex choices.

Until it happens to you, most people don't realize that a great number of rapes occur with acquaintances that you trust and have absolutely NO reason to suspect that they're planning on harming you. SO glad you shared details about your relationship partner. I think a lot of people who've never had positive experiences don't know what to look for. Your concrete examples will help a lot of people to create their own checklist.

The fact that being raped is so common these days makes me so mad . Something needs to change . People need to know this is not normal , this is not ok . Great video and I’m glad you spoke about it . Me being 17 and naive im glad I can hear your experiences and hopefully use them to make wise decisions . No matter how much hate you get I want to thank you for putting out this video .

That third experience...I am so sorry. No is no. And I relate. You think because you went to their house that it's your fault. But the truth is, people NEED to start taking responsibility for their actions and if someone decides part way through that they don't want it, YOU have to respect that and not make another person feel guilty. This mentality that if you choose to go see a person you give up the right to your own body is so wrong.

This is such a great video, starting with the first story, and ending much more better. This really resonated with me. When I lost my virginity it wasn’t consensual, and a few years later I began a sexual relationship with the same guy. And I felt so guilty even saying that the first time we had sex I didn’t want it. Like how did I now expect people to believe me if here I was having consensual sex with him now. Wow. I really thought I was alone in that situation.

I realize this is an old comment but just so you and others like you (and Shan) know: it is pretty common and you’re most definitely not alone. As I understand it, it’s a way to reclaim the control the rapist stole from you. Unfortunately there are people who aren’t educated or empathetic enough to understand this but please don’t feel guilty or blame yourself. It was an attempt to deal with the trauma the best way you could at the time, it still wasn’t and never will be your fault that you got raped. And you having consensual sex with that person afterwards does not cancel out their wrongdoings. ❤️

Shannon this video changed my life. Because you told your story and it was so similar to mine I gained the strength to finally confront my rapist after 10 years and finally tell my entire family. I didn't lean on anyone for support and I held on to that secret for almost a decade. And that changed the day you uploaded and I watched this video. And throughout it all I had sexual relationships that allowed my body to be simply used over and over again. I thought the more sex I had the more empowered I was but I didn't feel empowered because the sex wasn't for my own pleasure. I would cry on my way home from most encounters. It wasn't until I met my now husband that my pleasure became my priority and his love and attentiveness opened that door for me. So I say all of that to say thank you for being so open. you have changed my life girl!!! And I plan to pay it forward and do the same for other survivors and thrivers. My heart is more open than ever now. Thank you!

Wow! I also had a similar experience. My sexual assault happened when I was 15. Being raped broke me in a way that’s indescribable. It shattered my soul. I felt like the inside of my thighs were tainted, diminished, and damaged goods. I felt disgusting-both literally and figuratively. For a long time, I blamed myself, felt extremely humiliated, and overwhelmingly shameful. My innocence was stolen, my body was violated, and I felt like my soul had a permanent stain. It is heartbreaking to realize that so many individuals-both men and women-have been raped, assaulted, molested, groped, sexually harassed, etc at least once in their lifetime. Sexual abuse of any form is so extremely common, it’s mind boggling. I know more people in my life who had been raped, than those who haven’t. It shouldn’t be that way. There are some evil, demonic, and twisted predators living among us, who look like a human-with eyes, a nose, etc. Sexual abusers are often charismatic and charming. Often times, it’s someone you know and trust, someone you thought would never betray you. But underneath their skin, lies a demonic spirit that preys, abuses, and exploits. I know this comment is 2 years old at this point, but I stumbled upon this video just now, and immediately fell in love with Shannon. I’m sure comments like the one you posted is the reason she continuously makes videos. I’m so happy to hear that you’re doing well. Truthfully, I’m still struggling with the trauma and demons that my raped caused me to have, but I’m taking it one day at a time. I pray that your marriage is blissful, that your wounds are healed, and that you’re happy and whole. Much love to you. May God continue to bless you abundantly! 💖

I just lost it recently in my late late 20s. I grew up in a religious cult that shamed sex and abusive household so I think that contributed to me losing it so late. I had a great first time with someone I chose and I knew for 2 years. We were not in a relationship though and to my disappointment it didnt turn into one.I have only had sex a few times. Im disappointed because I thought I would be learning with my first partner and now Im not a virgin and still no experience. I wish I lost it as a teenager so I wouldnt have to deal with this now as an adult.

It takes a lot of gut and bravery to acknowledge your history to not only yourself but to an online audience. What you do is so needed - no matter how uncomfortable your topics may seem. And they are only uncomfortable because sex is a matter that is not discussed in real life as it should be. The truth is - what you are doing is what every woman wish she could do. Talk about our sexual pasts. Our histories. Our mistakes. Sex is such a taboo language. Thank you for creating the dialogue and allowing women, like me, to feel comfortable about their sexual identities - little by little. Keep growing and sharing everything that comes out of your mind! Most women only want to share the good experiences. It takes a lot to put certain things about you out there for the world to see. You’re not afraid to share the bad experiences knowing that someone will precede it as bad; another may learn and hopefully benefit from it. Women need to be more like you, comfortable in their own skin. Keep doing you and being you. You’re awesome! I really enjoy your videos.

"teenage boys will be teenage boys" No, they have to learn to respect. That kind of behaviour is not intrinsic to the fact that they are either boys or teenagers, but the socializatiom process OF becoming a boy. And that is not okay and we don't have to be passive about it.

Ethos Thirteen could mean many things ? Could mean not having sex ? Could mean ensuring protection is used? Could mean only having sex with a partner after certain personal conditions are met example time frame, commitment etc etc and the list could go on and onnnnnn.... however the most important thing here is an individuals choice at deciding whatever sexual freedom means to them is uniquely their own and theirs alone.

Bury Me In Chanel within your statement is a HUGE deception that has swept Western culture in the last generation. Within those 3 words is the biggest lie ever told > there is NO SUCH THING AS 'HEALTHY' sexual freedom. Healthy sexuality only exists within the structure of marriage between one man and one woman. Done.

@Yahudah Israel Sexual freedom does not equate to promiscuity. one has nothing to to do with the other. there are women who do not understand the science behind sex or how to protect themselves sexually that are incredibly promiscuous. sexual freedom means the right to choose because you have the knowledge to do so. keeping people in the dark does not get rid of natural, instinctual behaviours like sex. ignorance is not bliss and it is not godly.

Love you Shannon! I do want to comment on one remark you said. When you said that at 16 years old individuals are physically ready to have sex, I want to remind the young viewers that physically being ready and mentally being ready is two different things. I remember being 16 and how I was not interested in sex at all. And that was because of many factors, I was always taught to focus on my schoolwork, couldn't date yet, etc. So I just wanted to mention this point, because I believe there is this other side of it where everyone is ready in their own time. When I was ready and interested in sex I remember feeling exactly that. It no longer felt like it was this thing that other people did, it was this thing that I could see myself exploring because I was there mentally (I was 19). I also want to say that Im sorry you get negative comments like the examples you showed in your video. I applaud you for fighting back. Ive been a subscriber for under a month now, and I subscribed because I see how intelligent, confident, humble, and beautiful of a individual you are!

The amount of knowledge that I gained from this video is unparalleled. I'm 19 years old turning 20 this year, and I was always self conscious about whether I was not experienced enough for my current boyfriend or if I was too complacent for my own liking. I too was a victim of sexual assault from my own boyfriend from that time. What you have said in this video resonated with me on so many different levels. There was no better time for me to bump into this lovely self actualization video. I have not only been inspired but I have been gifted with the fact that it is okay to say no, it is okay to know what I want, as well as its completely okay to be imperfect and vulnerable at your own will. Thank you so much.

Shan, I personally believe it's better to use the term "sexual debut" versus "lost my virginity". The latter sounds outdated and weird- we didn't "lose" it, we just simply had our first sexual experience (whether it was good or bad). When talking about sex I personally use the term "sexual debut" and it seems to resonate well with others and I would suggest sex educators and others use it too. 💗

Well done. That is such a good point. I agree. You give someone your virginity not lose it. Your sharing your sexuality. Lose it sounds more like religious fanatics that think that lust should be withheld until marriage. I think a person may have sex with a person they like and it is mutually desired. I like your style though, sexual debut is interesting.

I love your honesty. A guy I've been seeing (that may be wearing out his welcome) said "I hate that girls talk about sex life, that's private" and my answer to him was "Girls just gossip about that stuff, it's fun" which in some ways is true but I also think that women have to. Like some of my friends had never orgasmed even on their own and we traded tips and experiences and it happened for them. Guys get off most of the time regardless of who it is or intimacy etc. I texted him and changed my answer to his generalization (that I don't think is true. Men ain't all hush hush all the time that's for sure) cause of this video.

There is so much shaming involved in ALL directions with this. I lost my virginity at 23 to my first (and last! still going strong) serious relationship and the amount of pressure I felt not just from peers but from female rolemodels in my life as well between the ages of 13 and 23... like something was wrong with me for not being in a hurry. I just wanted to be true to myself, just like everyone else is allowed to be. There is so much virgin shaming, too, and so much suggestion that it implies you're unwanted. Especially my own mother regularly drew parallels between me and her older sister... who spent her entire life alone. Can we stop telling women how to rule their bodies?!

I want to take this moment and thank you for being so honest about your life and telling your stories. My friends and I all have a similar story about non consented sex, that once we shared with each other brought us closer and also made us realize we were not alone (sad to say) and it is horrible that as females this is something we had to bond over but at the same time at least we have each other and we continue to embrace our sexuality and move forward. Hearing what your sister said to you was all to familiar because at one point I said the same thing to my best friend. I had went through the same experience and didn't know what to think of it and never wanted to talk about it ( I normalized it in my head). Their are plenty of females out here that need your stories and education so please never stop or think that what your doing is going no where because you are changing lives and empowering all women.
