we had two K9's with us in Afghanistan. true story one of our dogs found a Daisy chain IED which is two or more ieds together basically forming a kill zone well this was a 18 IED chain, that dog saved all of our lives that day. and better news just found out recently that dog was retired and given to his handler from that deployment.

I've wanted to be a K9 Handler since I joined the Military back in 2007, and my new partner and I recently passed our state certification. Thank you for the information all those years ago that affirmed my drive to become a handler! I hope you're doing well brother!

@vanityrae83
@vanityrae83 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Even though hes not trained to be a k9 police service dog. German shepherd is a active working breed. They need consistent daily thorough exercise, stimulation & attention. German shepherds arent a companion lap dog. Its unfair & unkind to not give them proper stimulation. Long walks, lots of play fetch ball, training on commands, love & affection - Everyday. Seriously. If ur not ready to give that breed the constant thorough attention it needs everyday seriously consider rehoming too someone that can give him the stimulation he needs. A dog is a 15+ year commitment. It's a child that requires your full love and attention *all the time.*

Hey Officer401, As someone that is trying to get into law enforcement, and K-9 at that, are there any tips that you can give to someone who is trying to get into the program. Something i can do now that will help me during the process of selection for who the department will make the next K-9 handler
@Overland_Vanlife

Learn Dutch commands, most K9s use Dutch for commands. Foose for heel, sitz for sit, platz for lay down, aus for no, fass for bite, pas auf for bark, and blibe for stay. You can also look into decoy training and become a certified decoy “fat man” suit.. also see about volunteering for K9 events in your area to get known a little and be a familiar face. That’s the best advice I can give as a current K9 handler 👍🏻 Good luck

Kind of reminds me of the way my grandfather trained retrievers for duck hunting. To train the dog not to clamp down and rip the duck apart he would tie a string around of of its does and them give it a duck if it bit down too hard or started ripping on it he would pull on the string and the dogs learned not to do it after an hour. He trained some of the best retrievers in the U.S. and i still have a big box of ribbons and trophies that the dogs won.

I once did a job for a guy that was a private trainer for police dogs. This guy was a retired officer he had about 10 or 12 dogs including a retired do. I'll never forget how beautiful these dogs were . I shit you not though these dogs were serious professionas and I wasn't allowed near them. They guy had to walk with me every single step I took while I was there to work on his system for 2.5 hours.

While in high school I started doing police dog training & handling as an agitator. Master Trainer Bill (Howard) Rountree was my mentor. At that time and to this date Bill & M.T.tony Barios were the only 2 people in the USA that didn't move to Germany for two years of their lives to reach the level of Master trainers. German trainers for the first & last time came to Bakersfield CA at Mandelyn kennels. I lived at a dog kennel as a trainer at 240 Hudson Dr. When my girl friend be called New York to her mentor as a M.T.she tells Jack Yellie(spelling?) who is at her kennel. As a Master trainer his self he said it would be the highlight of his career to meet my friend Bill. Tony Barios used my dog as an example of the least progress in his public class. Tony didn't impress me either. A childhood prayer being answered was how the 2 most prestigious people in the field of police dog training was a blessing that to this day continues. R.I.P. IN MEMORY OF HOWARD (BILL) ROUNTREE.

So he deploys his K-9, nd the Criminal Kills him... Now the Tables turn. He's getting Charged with Killing an Officer! Here in Denmark the police will almost always get the dogs as puppies and then train the dogs with a mix of paid and own time, they will have the dogs as pets at home and they are trained to only go for the arm when chasing down a guy (so no need for a body suit, as long as one arm is covered it's enough when training). I know this is quite a short description, but how do you feel this is compared to your training, if given the choice would you rather have it like this, or do you prefer the way you guys get and train the dogs?
@bena4914

Great video. I used a trainer that had a k9 background to train my dog (now deceased) and he used those prong collars. They used the practice of "hanging" when the snap correction didn't stop the dog from being aggressive. The sound that came out of my dog when he was "hanged" was awful. For those that don't know what I mean by hanging. You're supposed to bring the dog up on his hind quarters just to where his hind paws are about to come off the ground. My dog was definitely better but at the same time he was changed forever - hard to explain.

Liked the story about the dog that was biting his handler... K9s are not pets. They are a weapon. You have to control the weapon, and harness it's abilities to use it for good, or it'll hurt someone is not supposed to. Stay safe!

Im an officer and currently in training with a K-9 GSD for bomb detection (not in the US)...Well I didnt get a finished dog. We started training while she was still a pup and it has been about 10 months now. I think this way is better because now we have an unbreakable bond. She works off leash and follows my commands...Yea the nose on that dog is astonishing. She can pick up TNT (which has a pretty weak smell compared to other types of explosives) on the doorstep and it's just a matter of pinpointing the source of the smell in the room/house/apartment. My instructors like to hide them in impossible places, even going so far as to unbolt ducts, dismantle desks, pipes, PC units, TVs, door handles and such...on cars same thing. One time they put a stick of PEP500 in with the oil in the engine block to see if she can recognize the pep while mixed with oil > No prob :D ...Anyways, in my personal opinion no matter what kind of dog (attack, drugs, tracking etc) it is still a living breathing being not just a tool. It too needs love, play, attention just like any other dog. If its needs are not met (just like us) they'll do a crappy job...dogs are awesome, never had a better job in my life ^^

Glad to know that usually the correction isn't as severe. Even pet dogs do need correction from time to time, like police dogs need a more firm correction than your typical house dog, just the way they were raised and trained.

The K9 handler that you spoke of.. being scared of and/or bit by his dog after six months.. Was there ever any suspicion that the dog sensed something amiss about the handler that the fellow officers did not?

I remember when I was a teen, me and my 2 buddies were walking at night back to his house and there was an unmarked car with a k9 that was just out sniffing around bushes and houses with the person in the car still. When the dog saw us he started barking like a warning and the person in the car turned on their head lights and just watched us walk past. Not sure what it was maybe just some person with a dog but it seemed weird.

I trained mine in search & rescue. I would name one of my kids when playing hide & seek and our Alpha-male would find that specific kid. He climb trees, ladders and swing on ropes. He is passed on. His son sleeps by my bed each night, totally devoted to me.

I have to tell I have ex military dogs from family member bringing them as they are. or we're considered. soldiers and they always just rip stuff up we have a alot of property so we let them lose and they are a mix of Shepard's and boxers and they mostly are. good but really they have a lot of different commands or ways to keep them in check which was rare as it was military training and so I feel for you an your K-9 units I see that they are so helpful and sometime better than people but when they protect. you and help you and surve you it makes you love them more.

Definitely know that some dogs are extremely violent, especially ones that are trained to actually attack people. They get trapped in a violent mindset and the only way to snap them out of it is with pain, unfortunately. They are pretty smart, but still animals.

When I was like ten me and about five friends were playing tag in the dark, it was hide and seek tag but the seeker had a flashlight and nobody else did. So six ten year olds were running around into the dark, having fun. So when this happened my hiding spot was right by the sidewalk, barely visible front eh sidewalk but if you looked, or smelled, you could see me. So I'm hiding and I hear the seeker, I wait for him to walk off but I don't hear him and instead I hear a very loud bark that sends me flying from the hiding spot, I look over at the seeker who's looking around like what happened. I look to the sidewalk, seeing a figure standing there and i get scared because it's a grown ass man standing near a bunch of ten year olds. So I finally see the cop car and I'm thinking, makes sense. My friend doesn't and instead randomly waves the flashlight around. The cop notices and calls out a 'who's there' and you just see like four other ten year olds walk out of their hiding spots and the light lands on the dog. He's like half the size of me and his bark made me jump, So the cop gets his dog after the dog takes a dump and leaves six scared ten year olds in the forest not the middle of the night. Needless to say we didn't go back there for a while
