Ramadan is typically described as a month-long fast. Yet the entire month is filled with feasting. Indeed, binge eating during Ramadan is causing a health crisis in Muslim countries. So why is gluttony and excess portrayed as strict discipline and self control in Islam? Is there a spiritual component to Ramadan? David Wood explores the issue, and uncovers the disturbing truth about Islam's holiest month.

I was in Riyadh during Ramadan back in ‘84. Muslims from everywhere came to walk around a circle for their religious reasons. As they were going to their big circle, there were many women dressed in black from head to toe sitting on hot sidewalks with only their hand sticking out begging for change. Most Muslims walking by to their religious circle ignored these women. That was my introduction to the Muslim religion.

@@cindirose3390 not really. Only those who gorge food in the name of “fasting” are twisted. While there are some people who excessively overeat, it’s not to the degree that David is emphasizing. Most who bother to fast do it properly. Furthermore, Muslim fasting also includes abstaining from sins and increasing supplication and prayers. For example, it is heavily recommended that you read the entirety of the Quran.

I am a remote English tutor and I would tutor kids during Ramadan last year and I never understood why so many small children would schedule lessons with me at midnight. I've started fasting since I was 5 years old, because I wanted to be like an adult. My mother did not allow me to sleep the day and stay awake in the morning. She always pointed out what is the point of fasting if I slept all day. And on the 15th day of Ramadan, she realized that my body looks exhausted from fasting, especially because I was fasting in a Desert (I am an Arab that immigrated to Saudi) so she forced me to fast half day, I refused, so she told me to fast one day and break it the next day, and when I would become 6, I would be allowed to fast the whole of Ramadan My siblings started by half fast and gradually increasing the duration. We would read the Quran in the day. At least finish 20 pages everyday. We would watch cartoons about the prophets (PBUT) or read books about them (PBUT). Or about the history of İslam and its values So if you had bad experience, do not generalise. I did not generalise on chrisitians when one of them did a bad thing. As an ex-convert, I have to say your description of Ramadan, as it's currently carried out by Muslims, is totally accurate. Originally, you're not supposed to be feasting during the night. I was taught that prophet Muhammad didn't do that. I was taught you're supposed to eat less as a whole, not just simply fast during the day. Nevertheless, I got caught up in the feasting just as much as everybody else. What a joke.

I’ve lived in Arabia and I’ve seen many hypocritical practices about fasting. Just like what you said they eat tons of food at night so they have enough calories reserved for the daytime. And then they have to excuse themselves from doing hardworks since they’re fasting (it became a very good excuse not to do any shit). They work half day and sleep during the other half, at night they feast (eat as much food as they can) before around 4 am. Then the cycle repeats until Eid.

I am currently fasting as part of my spiritual practice, for its health benefits, and to lose some of my fatty tissue. I fast two days a week every week. I don't abstain from taking in fluids, for obvious health reasons and because staying hydrated is crucial for my well-being. I have found that abstaining from food for even a single day provides a spiritually enriching experience. It changes my brain chemistry because the body replaces glucose with ketone bodies, altering hormones in a way that allows for a better connection with God. I even look forward to my fasting days, and although it’s hard to resist eating, it gets easier the longer you do it and the longer you haven’t eaten. My longest water fast (meaning I only consumed fluids) was two full weeks, or 14 days, without any breaks and without eating when the sun goes down-24 hours a day, every day. Currently, I fast for around 32 hours until I resume eating the next day. So, a full day and the night when I sleep. It might even be longer because I don't stop eating at midnight, and I don't start eating immediately after waking up. There is substantial research supporting the health benefits of fasting, such as improved metabolic health, enhanced brain function, and reduced inflammation. When done properly, fasting can be a safe and effective practice for both spiritual and physical well-being.

Or anything else really. Asking for tolerance of unproductive coworkers for an entire month is so wrong on so many levels. Financially damaging to the company, health hazards for clients, workload compiling left undone, deadlines not met, service performance dropping, etc etc. Because every single job on planet requires undivided attention and fast reacting. I hope you guys wished your Muslim colleagues Happy Ramadan but that you're not "expecting them to work less", at least not for the same salary. Someone should anonymously reply to that mail asking for "the colleagues who are working less this month to have adequate proportional salary reduction, and that you guys who take a chunk of their workload get the appropriate salary increase. It is only fair, right, boss?" End the letter with a nice "Ramadan Mubarak".

being an Orthodox christian in Indonesia im really familiar with this islam practice of fasting, i still can't believe they call it fasting. as an Orthodox Christian, i fast too. And most of us christians practice strict fasting. Can't believe how easy it is to "fast" for Muslims. Btw, here in Indonesia (the largest Muslim majority country in the world), for every ramadhan they demand every non muslim here to not go eat in front of them, they demand every food court, restaurant and all kind of food businesses to close during the ramadhan. i remember some of them muslims burned a restaurant down just because the owner would open the restaurant on ramadhan. lol and their fasting practice is actually easy.

During my postgraduate studies, I chose to join my Muslim friends in observing Ramadan by fasting alongside them. For the first three days, I limited myself to only drinking water. For the rest of the month, I ate only once a day and reduced my food portions. Throughout this period, I kept my fasting a secret from almost everyone, except my roommate, who knew because we attended the same classes and spent a lot of time together. By the end of the month, I had lost nearly 15 kilograms, while my roommate, who was aware of my fasting, ended up gaining an extra 9 kilograms.

I fast for 3 days every 30 days, all I consume for those 3 days is water. This is not for religious purposes but for my health as it helps to reset my auto-immune system and calm down my allergies/intolerances. It is pretty easy for me to do now, in fact the hardest thing is starting to eat normally after the 3rd day as I have to build up slowly and don't get back to my normal consumption until about day 6. I certainly couldn't gorge for 30 days although I wouldn't find it hard to go without food between sunrise and sunset as I generally don't eat lunch anyhow. Going without water would be much harder. I am aware of the morning and evening feasts as my neighbours are a Muslim family from Afghanistan and during Ramadan they eat in the garden and are still outside eating until the early hours and at weekends they are out all night. One of my friends lives in what has become a mainly Muslim area and even young children are still playing out in the street until 3 or 4am during Ramadan.

I read an article years ago where it said that human body can digest food quicker between 2 pm and 4 pm. That's why during these hours you should eat the most of your daily food. Meanwhile, during Ramadan you are fasting during these hours and then eating during the time when digestion is weakest, that explains the fact that Muslims gain a lot of weight during Ramadan.

And from morning 6am to 6pm he changed his duty timings from 6pm to 6am .. and whole night he had 3 big meals .. with 2 snacks breaks .. and his eating+ feasting businesses was all done in duty hrs. And at 5:50am he did handover and went straight to bed. And whole day he slept and even restricted his roommate to enter the room when he is sleeping coz he would be disturbed in Ramadan. He woke at 1pm for 10 mins for peeing and pray . And finally woke at 4-4:30 pm and started collecting all tasty food items in his plates from the buffet available, together with special fruits and dry fruit salad plate. And within 1 month mr. Also, if you think the timeframe of it all and the rules of eating before makes it easy - you just need to try it yourself.Just keep in mind that fasting for 15+ hours in North America is not uncommon depending on the time of year.
