Unfortunate part is, they can't get their own music on the radio, stations won't even open their emails of it's just off the strength of the artists. Plus, they can't make moves with other artists down the line that have labels , because the labels handle all the business decisions between eachother for their artists.

Hands down the best explanation of how this works. I’m going into PR and I tell people this all the time. Your favorite rapper on IG doesn’t own any of those clothes, cars or jewelry. It’s all rented and borrowed. Think about all these rappers you know of through IG; they have all these nice things yet we’ve never heard any songs from them. Most of them now make money off of partner/sponsorships which the label benefits off of too. These people get stuck in bad deals and end up there for the rest of their lives and the labels force them to stay in the spotlight to attract ppl. Yes, you can make great music in your house for a fourth of that 100k studio time. This is why REAL talent matters.

That's hell of a fantasy for most people. Since majority are beneath the upper economic class. Folks like me are living under someone else's roof, can't get a decent job and have no real skill, that's just like most people trying to make it. So eehhh idk. If you can then go for it, but everyone has their own struggle. Kinda feels like you feel special and different (like most people trying to make it) or maybe you're just unexperienced enough to have these type of fable/privelege thoughts.

The music industry is a mafia of sorts: unless you are part of the family, you will never get access to the people and the methods that will enable you to have a similar career to signed artists. You can try to market yourself independently and be relatively successful (as in have a wide fanbase via social media), but you will never get the publicity, media mileage, award nominations, etc. unless you make a deal with a major label.
@sirwellingtonthethird687
@sirwellingtonthethird687 3 жыл бұрын
Because the people that do that aren’t able to live off their careers. They could but they’ll be struggling to make ends meet. Plus what you’re saying takes a lot of time and money, when these rappers are mostly broke when they sign. For them choosing to sign for riches is better than hustling till who knows how long.

That’s why you must negotiate your contract when getting a record deal. Fifth Harmony made millions for their label but the girls didn’t see none of that money. nice! One thing I think you should add about expenses is how shady they are. For instance, a record label gives you a budget to record. They give you a list of recording studios that you can go to. What the artist doesnt know is that recording studio has a relationship with the label. So whatever money they spend on recording gets a "kick back". Not knowing the label probably paid for the recording studio for the month or sometimes a year. So you pay the recording studio and then they send that bread right back to the label while in essence the label didnt lose a dime on you. Or the death clause in a contract. Record labels put life insurance on the artist. So in the event if they die, the label collects that bread. And what happens? They give you the radio play that you as an artist been looking for prior to your death. So they collect the money on your death and then collect the money AGAIN after you are dead. And EVERYTHING belongs to them.

One major correction. All recouping is done from the artists percentage, not off the top. So that 2 million is paid back through that artists 8% not the whole amount. The label keeps that 92% its how they keep an artist in debt and still make money
@MarvelousPhilly
@MarvelousPhilly 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Like I told my one rapper friend (won't mention his name), an advance isn't JUST an advance. It's an advance Loan. No one is just going give you "free money." One thing we learned; if you're very popular and get millions of views/plays even without a deal, the label needs/wants you more than you needing them. You can take advantage of that. Like he did. He asked for a lot less of an advance, and asked if they could also help him start a record label. After the business, lawyer talks, he ending with the perfect deal and more than just the money and label.

The Internet companies will ream you even harder. Like Uber. Cabbies make more money and are provided with a car. Uber tells you are only charged 17 percent. But you pay for your own maintenance and gas and if you deduct those costs, cabbie makes more. Plus you are all lone with Uber. At least as a cabbie if you get beat up, they will pay for your hospital bills. But Uber will tell you why you calling us. We just hook you up with the customers. That is all.

great info, this was broken down perfectly. what we need are real management companies that can get us sales, streams, and branding deals from their own extensive network, without us having to sign any deals, they get their 15% and we’re good to go. this way we don’t have be involved with the dark aspects of the music industry.

This is sad basically is a deal that you can’t never break and less you die pretty much. Because, no matter what you do record labels will always will and keep you as there slave. While you the artist bust your ass making them all the money, and they Just profit of your work. This is like living your own hell while still being alive, if you ask me this is mad crazy and borderline.

Incorrect, artists cave because they get it and realize its not what they wanted. Most just want the financial freedom not doing the homework behind it. Also some are artists and others arent. Some just want a check and others take pride in creating musical art because its their passion. But i see where you coming from, the industry is designed to promote negative narratives/ connotations, because negative attention gets maximized and positive attention gets minimized. Nowadays its easier the independent route, but social media conflicts most perception on reality so they do irrational impulsive decisions, thinking their going to get where the favorite artist is; not knowing the work they have to put in to get there. Long story short people got lazy.

But it makes it easier for them to control you since you can’t get many other jobs with those tattoos that pays the same. They know you’ll have no choice but to sell out once your in deep. Especially rappers that didn’t finish high school or college. It becomes their only way out.

any artist reading this-- put a studio room in your house ! this will save you hundreds of thousands, you don't have to pay for studio time, leave your house to drive across town to pay for someone else's business, you have the freedom to produce as much music as you want. learn how to create your own beats, videos, etc. it's SO easy, just think about how much money you save without paying an engineer, studio sessions, etc.. when you can do everything yourself a label HAS to cut a straight deal. these labels (most) only care about one thing and it's not you. if you do decide to sign with a major label, do your research & be established PRIOR to going and sitting down with them. i know that is not easy especially for those of us that grow up a certain way but in telling you, don't be manipulated by the media or the labels, alot of these rappers don't even have it like they claim to. it's all deceiving and about $. love to anyone seeing this and stay true to yourself 💯💪🏽🤍

Brother, these are words every artist needs to hear before they sign anything, or any agreement. One point I would add is that an artist should have an attorney before even entering into any conversation with a label. Someone recommended by someone outside of the label or production company. So that the deal can be fully vetted and explained to them before they proceed with signing and so that they have more leverage. Even as a new artist you can approach the music business and build your own brand in these times. Blessings and thanks for spreading the information and truth. This should be taught 101 to any aspiring artist.

It's sad bc some artists have no choice because they broke and can't make music or videos without a label

If a label comes at you with a fat advance, understand you can be making that amount already without them! That's why they're putting up that figure to advance you. Especially now a days with fat checks from music licensing deals and the tools of social media, the independent artist game needs to be respected. Dont sign your publishing away over a crap advance.

This was very good I'm an Independent Soul/Jazz Recording Artist Singer/Songwriter and Music Producer. This was precisely why I chose to continue to an Independent Artist. For me it was never about fame it was always about the Art. I think the Artist that fall in the trap are Artist who are seeking fame money and women hence the satanic agenda. Artist also don't understand this is a business and you're self employed and responsible for payroll. Please continue to post this content. I'm a new subscriber and looking forward to watching more of your content.
