@@giabarrone7422I don’t think that’s what they’re suggesting however at what age do children really truly deeply understand the concept of something being online forever? The thought of future peers giving them a hard time or potentially losing future jobs or even their future partner’s family refusing to accept them among many other possible consequences to uncensored unfiltered footage of a child learning how to human. Maybe there could be some kind of training course required and they must become certified in order to legally appear online with limitations in how often the class can be taken and also highly limit the parent’s ability to be involved to prevent answer feeding or any other biases that might contaminate the process or results and interfere with the ability to properly assess whether or not the child is capable of grasping the ramifications of being publicly exposed on social media at an early age

@@imbuffysummers Well labor laws require a child to be 16 to work. I don’t think that will fly. New laws need to be written to address child exploitation. I’d like to see 95% of earnings made from content including the voice or image of a child go into a protected trust. Plus a weekly visit with an approved child psychologist that must give permission for the child to appear in content.

This comment says it all. Social media is mostly made up of attention whores. People who chase likes, shares, and follows. It's a toxic popularity contest that if you allow it will destroy you. I realized a long time ago that no one actually cares about what's going on in my life. Most of the likes are what I call mercy likes. People in your immediate circle of family clicking the like button simply because they see a post from someone they know. I don't need attention and I don't need to gloat about how good my life may or may not be. I don't need to post about every single place I go to or what meal I had for the evening. All of that is nonsense which has no value outside of being a brief distraction from the struggle of life.

@@sarahhawkins7582 What does “inclusive” mean? The Wild West internet would be the most truly inclusive place. If you want to censor people because they may offend someone, now you’re creating a space where thoughts and speech are policed. This is a tactic used by fascists. Fear of exclusion as a means to control the population’s beliefs and actions. Digital citizenship is newspeak brainwashing BS with the intent of creating obedient super consumers. You shouldn’t be teaching.

I think what's really important is the safety aspect and access to children. Remember when Alyson told us about the fans asking for pics and having no respect for privacy? Well, now I can bet it's even worse, cause these fans are watching you not only in movies, but also in personal moments and think they are your friends. Safety aspect - when I was a kid i remember being warned about things like wearing keys on my neck, cause that would send a signal to possible predators that I am going home while my parents are still at work. Someone could then manipulate me into thinking they are my mom's friend and that they want to enter the apartment with me. Now think of the kids whose lives are all on display. This predator would know not only they name, but their parents, siblings, maybe mom's friends, your and your family members' hobbies... Now that's convincing: "Hey Jakie, Jane... I mean, your mom, has a very important book of mine at your house, but she's at pilates right now with Sara so she asked me to let you in...". Now, if you are a kid you may be too easy to influence and just believe that.

I don't even watch family vloggers that much because seeing children's private spaces has never been a thing I'm comfortable with. However, the few I do watch, I literally will comment "I'm so relieved I don't know what your kid looks like or what the inside of their bedroom looks like. Never ever show them to me, I don't want to see them and their security is more important than my entertainment" just so that they know how important it is for my viewing experience that I NOT see their child or child's private space.

As someone who had almost 0 supervision on the internet as a child, the internet as it is now, is much much more powerful and dangerous. I can’t imagine having a child and throwing them an iPad. “Parental controls” can only go so far. My internet access only started around 8 years old…. It’s all scary and makes me wish I didn’t have an internet presence.

I'm SUCH a fan of this series, Alyson. You're so wise and well spoken on all of this! Thank you for sharing everything so fearlessly, it's beautiful and inspiring and I am always eager for the next episode! ..but like, I heard two terms that I'd never heard before in this video that make me want to absolutely vomit... "kidfluencer" and "neuro-marketing"... gtfo, absolutely WILD world we live in, ya'll. 😧 This is why I'm not on social media, and I tell you, the amount of peace and confidence thats been restored in me is significant (and it's only been like ~8 weeks). It even helped with my social anxiety, I think? It's as if not having my neural pathways always wanting to compare, compare, compare, (when scrolling) made me less afraid to interact with people bc I don't even think about comparison now (mine or theirs). I also believe unplugging from socials is what plugs our mind back into our body to be able to FEEL things again, instead of running everything through an intellectual filter (which isn't always helpful or accurate), if that makes sense? So, to me, no harm in fully coming off socials or having times when you're completely off socials (like for a few weeks, at least). Anyways, absolutely brilliant episode! Keep up the amazing work. 🙏❤

I want to do something about this in particular and not sure where to start. I'm in my mid 20s and realizing the immense impact social media has on my generation and younger generations as compared to some older generations. Having social media and rapid phone/internet access during the developmental stages has changed how we fit into and approach the world. It can be hard to translate to others who didn't have this childhood and adolescent experience. I feel like I've been brainwashed my whole life and am just waking up. It's terrifying and it might only get worse if society continues in the way it has been. Edit: Especially for children with higher levels of dissociation and people-pleasing tendencies from lives with bullying, abuse, etc. Very important to mention that distinction, too since that shows within the younger generations amongst themselves as well.

Alyson, your whole podcast series is a masterpiece. I wish only that it had portuguese subtitles so i could share it to my non english speakers friends. I'm an actress too (not a famous one haha) and I have worked many times with child actors and I could see how much they were hurting. And they all have social media in which many times they dress up as adults, are completely exposed during vunerable times, or they have to deal with haters and stalkers. Its really hard for us adults in the industry already, for kids is way more complicated... I would see kids that didn't want to be there at all, being completely forced to work for hours and hours. Kids obsessed with their own appearence, diets, etc... Here in Brazil we do have laws on child acting, they are way more severe than in the us, but it is still a problem, and there arent many laws for kid influencers aswell... There is a famous case here in Brazil about Larissa Manoela (child actress, influencer) and her mom, who stole all of her fortune and she didn't have money to buy corn, because her mother made her ask permition for everything, even as an adult. she worked for 18 years and all of her money was gone. I also give up a huge part of my life because of acting. Its a very cruel industry that really needs to change.

I really appreciate that these videos exist and that they are so thoughtfully created. It's very illuminating to hear all this! If I may ask, though, could you maybe be just as thoughtful and careful about your subtitles? Sometimes they're segmented really oddly, leaving really really short subtitles or cutting apart the sentences in ways they shouldn't be. I know it's a detail to the production but it would mean a lot for people who actually use them to be able to read them comfortably.

I recently had a pet loss and I posted on FB about it. Literally everything in the sponsored content is about this. I loved my cat so much but the constant reminder is becoming brutal! I even have the settings for this customized yet there is the targeted content 😢 it’s nuts

I honestly wish social media was only available to business's/companies and not the general public.. It gets too toxic and a danger to mental health

I think it became toxic because of the involvement of businesses looking to profit off of people who were just trying to connect with others. Take me back to og Myspace lol

Yeah I disagree dude, capitalism is one of the major reasons social media is toxic, like they're talking about in this video. Capitalism, ads, marketing, that twists the Internet into something that's no longer about human beings

Youre a very talented essayist, I've been binging this series the past day and have been really impressed by how deftly you cover a lot of heavy-hitting topics at once and all while keeping it under an hour.

At the very least, child actors are seen by the public playing a specific character. They are polished and edited by the studios to appear a certain way. A kidfluencer is usually in a home environment and are being themselves. Thus, it is much more likely that their most private moments (from embarassing situations to silly comments) will be on the internet foreve, define them and follow them around well into adulthood in a way that a film or tv show performance can't. I don't think kids should become influencers until they are old enough to understand the implications of putting content online and have a say in how their public image is managed and curated.

Capitalism isn't about money. Its about keeping the money you make, if you do. None of the problems with social media platforms would change if we live under a socialist govt. Just who the money goes to. A market is not the same as Capitalism, or collusion and corruption in a market.
