As adults, we see things so much differently than we use to; “OMG the pop-in, dropped frames, etc….” But if 10 year old me had this game, this would be perfection. I try not to be so critical anymore and just have fun and if I take that stance, this game just looks fun.

Very true. Also as you age (I'm 40) you have 35 years of past games, literally 1000s of games to compare to recent releases, and coz we have so much experience playing games and we watched them evolve, we are a lot harder to please, coz our standards are way higher than a 10-years-old, who sees everything through the eyes of a child: everything is fresh, new and exiting, coz they don't have the same connection as what came before. Their day will come, too where they're hard to please haha.

I bought my copy on Xbox and although I have an Xbox One X I have been playing on Xbox Series X, and load times have not been a problem. Interestingly, the Xbox Series S version does not have a 60 FPS mode; only on Series X. And that's how I've been playing it.

I've really been enjoying Frontiers on the switch. It suffers from the usual switch issues, blurry, pop ups etc but I've experienced no slow down and for all of its problems, none of them stop it from being a competent port or a highly enjoyable game which it is. For me it's the best Sonic game since Adventure 2 (Sonic stages) or Generations. Nothing in between those or since. Don't believe all the hate. If you've ever wanted to mess around in an open space as Sonic, this is the game. It definitely has aped alot of Breath of the Wild, almost shamelessly in some aspects but who cares? If you want a good 3d Sonic game it's here. Sega have deserved all the heat over the years and that's coming from a fan since day 1 1991 but here is a good Sonic game. Credit where its due.

Got this game on my RX5600. It looks and runs beautiful on my huge TV. Love the Cyber levels, brings back tons of memories of the 90s. I wish they have 16bit Cyberspace levels kind of like what Mario Odyssey did with the 8bit obstacles.

I'm playing this on the PS5 and really enjoying it, I played about 5 hours today and didn't want to put it down it was so much fun and that's something we often forget about with games today. We spend so much time on resolution, framerates and breaking down game mechanics but this is just fun to run around quickly and smash robots

RGT, same feels man. I love it. I am still on the first island. But just going around, finding things, solving puzzles, opening up the world more. It is a surreal experience. That soundtrack, immersion, wonder, and heartfelt. Plus you are right about that boss battle track. It goes hard, because it has to. Frontiers is epic

Fun fact: the voice actor in this game (Roger Craig Smith) also voiced Ezio from Assassin’s Creed, Crane from Dying Light and Chris Redfield from RE. He was the voice actor for Sonic since Colors released. But I do agree that the voice in this game feels weird.

While Roger is a good voice actor, I never really rated him a good voice for Sonic when compared to Ryan, Jason and Jun'ichi. And now with Roger's new voice, it kinda comes across like he's trying way too hard to sound mature and be taken seriously, when you compare it to Jun'ichi in the Japanese dub who continues to talk within his natural range as Sonic and still sell the seriousness of what is going on. As could Ryan and Jason. Again, I don't think Roger is a bad actor, he just doesn't fit Sonic.

Well I’m glad to get a review from a genuine Sonic/ Sega fan because people can be so nitpicky about every little thing, it’s very exhausting. Even though you touched on those issues with this game as you should, which I’m totally fine with, but at the end of the day a good game is a good game and Sonic games have been ehh for a minute to say the least. So with Sonic Mania and going forward its good to see Sonic games trending in the right direction again. Good stuff bro 😎

Been playing Sonic Frontiers on Steam ( runs great btw) since arriving from work and I got to say the game is underrated AF which is not surprising considering a lot of gamers have this preconceived notion that Sonic games are no good. I think the level of skill required to play Sonic games is often overlooked. Some people just suck at Sonic games.There's really nothing that plays like it and some people just have a hard time controller such a fast character. Anyway if you are good at Sonic games this game will def be up your alley. Highly recommended, I literally couldn't stop smiling while playing.

I really appreciate you mentioning the boss fights in this review. As someone who listens to lots of genres but prefers heavy metal and some old veil of maya. This was a big treat to discover. I still haven't got the game yet but now I really must try it. Been wanting a good 3d sonic game since Generations. 2 places I would love to see in frontiers is seaside hill from hero’s and crisis city from 06. I feel like seaside can be expanded on and dropped in somehow. I feel like it’s got potential to link zones with its level design. Crisis city seems like a plat forming challenge. It could take some inspiration from stage 1 of forces. I would also like an ice cyloop and a flame kick tech from shoo upgrades maybe.

There's an Eggman audio diary in the game, that you can purchase from Big the Cat with fishing tokens. In that diary, Eggman says that Sonic was mocking him, but he embraced the nickname "Eggman" and now it's a name that strikes fear around the world. He also says that he's not going to embrace "Baldy McNosehair" because his dignity has its limits.

Just played the 1 hour test version and I love it. It's just a blast. The gameplay, the open zones, the speed, the fighting system, the boss fights, the video sequences...I love it all. For me Sonic Adventure, Sonic Generations and Sonic Frontiers are the best modern Sonic games ever!

I think the true reason this game works... It's because Sonic is fast. When you have giant open worlds with any other game....playing through a collectathon can be very tedious because you have to slowly jog around on foot or slightly move around faster on a horse, and it's annoying. But with Sonic speed.... getting from place to place collecting little items and trinkets can be more fun than tedious.

Not a generation thing. I play exclusively handheld, my son exclusively on TV unless we're not home. Even though I've owned most of the major consoles I always found GB/GBC/GBA/DS/3DS is where I spent most of my time. Admittedly, that was because of Pokemon. So it kinda stuck and now I play nearly everything on handheld. The Steamdeck is brilliant and I legitimately can't wait until I can get one in my hands for that reason.

I was playing Xbox 360 last night and it made me realize that the Switch actually has much better graphics. It makes sense considering it has like 8x the amount of VRAM though.

The Ninja enemies look cool, do you fight more than one of them at a time, or get a mix of enemies in the fight at once like Unleashed? Because while the combat does look interesting, I don't think they're pushing it to its full potential in an empty open world with mostly larger bosses when you consider something like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta or as said earlier, Unleashed which seems quite disappointing to be honest. Also with Sonic's voice, for all it looks like they're shooting for a more serious tone, hearing Roger Craig Smith lowering his voice makes it feel more like faux seriousness, or like he's trying too hard to be mature. Especially when compared to Jun'ichi Kanemaru, who sounds exactly the same as he always has for the past 24 years of voicing the character, and can still sell the seriousness within his natural range.

I'll be picking this up on my PS4 most likely around early January because Frontiers is not bad (just need to fixed the pop-up issues and the grind rails look so weird in the air with no connection and the platforms).

I liked sonic unleashed for xbox 360 and ps3. At the time of its release, people hated it especially the night time warehog stages, But I thought it was a pretty awesome GOW esque style gameplay. It's not the worst sonic game but it has it's flaws. This new sonic game reminds of sonic unleashed with just the day levels. Maybe i'll pick it up when it goes on sale! 😂

Wow we have the same exact reaction to both games haha. Sonic unleashed is one of my favorite games from my childhood. At first I really wasn't considering on getting frontiers, but after seeing a few more trailers and some of my favorite KZbinrs play it, I might give it a shot and get it on my series x one day.

Yes I stopped playing it because of the Werehog stages. Just like I stopped SA2 because I was forced to play Knuckles Emerald search stages. In a Sonic Game I wanna play Sonic or as a Bonus have the freedom to choose another character.

I've heard people say good things about Sonic Frontiers. Critics don't understand how to play Sonic games, especially IGN. At least they gave the game a 7/10.

Hedgehog Engine 2 wasn’t exactly made for open areas. Even Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis has pop in. The LODs are very close, and boxes pop in. Not as noticeable as a platform floating in the sky, it’s pretty hard to miss a platform in the sky just appearing out of thin air, as opposed to a small box on the ground.

Yeah this is a buy from me too. I didn’t mind the pop-in too much, except at a certain point where you’re jumping on a leap of faith in hopes a platform appears under you.

I would definitely recommend speed control. It makes sonic feel way more faster and enjoyable to control. Action slows him down to a crawl
