Itchy Boots sure made it look easy on her CRF300. Of all the Dalton Hwy videos I’ve watched, this is the first one to mention sinkholes. An obvious real threat!

Thanks, @shakey2634. we thought the same.... In our video, we wanted to include every aspect of the Dalton Highway that we have experienced first hand, including the threat presented by the sinkholes that, as you say, is a very important thing to keep in mind for bikers heading north to the Arctic Ocean!! We are glad you enjoyed the video!! Best regards, J and D 👍

Most people don't realize it is THEIR forward speed that causes lights/windshields to break from flying gravel. If you pull over and stop your forward motion and let the big trucks pass, you will never get a broken windshield or broken headlight.

Absolutely true Bill!! As we say in the video, truckers on the Dalton were super nice to us and we understood immediately that that road is THEIR road, we are only temporary guests, and we made sure to create no inconvenience to them whatsoever. Best regards J and D.

NOT TRUE in some cases! I was parked alongside the Dempster Highway, stopped to fix a flat when an oncoming truck sped towards my direction. I heard this LOUD POP! When I stood up to examine my car, I saw the windshield had a circular smashed area the size of a baseball. So, in my case, I was parked when the truck threw the rock and broke my windshield.

When the truck driver see you slowing down they will also do the same. When trucks pass each other we slow down to 35mph. Believe it or not there are unwritten rules we follow.

I worked along this road driving pickups and big SUVs for 15 years driving hundreds of thousands of miles supporting the communications for the pipeline. Most drivers will slow for each other, but some don’t. We had CB radios in our vehicles and talked to the truckers giving them a clear road on hills by pulling over near the top or bottom. I loved driving it in the winter in the middle of the night we had big lights on our vehicles and the truckers do to so we can see each other miles away in most cases. I drove from Prudhoe to Fairbanks once in a little over 8 hours leaving Prudhoe at about 2 am and about -40 degrees. I knew every corner from Prudhoe Bay to Fairbanks by heart.I started work in Prudhoe in 1980. Left for the last time 10 years ago.

Loved the video and the story. We met in Whitehorse at the Hi Country RV Park. I was just returning from the Dempster with a group of riders (one was med EVACed). I was on my 2020 CB500X with the Rally Raid upgrades. On a tactical note, these remote rides are very mentally demanding and require an effective strategy. So, it looks to me like you cached that spare rear tire you had with you at Coldfoot to reduce your load but to still have it somewhere nearby. That is the strategy we typically use on the Dempster. I had not planned on doing the Dalton but I still have the Canol North Road and Telegraph Creek to complete; so when in the neighbourhood, I may as well. Safe travels.

Excellent video! You were there at the best time for good weather and you were prepared with mosquito head hat nets. I think if a rider brought along a few extra nets he/she could sell them to anyone who hadn't brought one... for $50 each! I'm sure people would be begging "Take my money! Please!" I bought a V-Strom at an insurance auction that was totaled out on the Dalton. The front wheel was shattered and the forks were bent back, I wondered how it happened but now I think it was probably one of the sink holes. If the wheel dropped in one it would be a sudden stop and first the forks would bend, then the wheel would explode as the mass of the bike kept going. I don't think there is a rider fatality every summer but they do happen too often. There are medivac helicopter trips for several riders every year it seems. The abandoned bike left lying there was most likely a medivac. The owner may, or may not retrieve the bike. It is very expensive to bring a bike out. Can you imagine what the towing charge would be for a large RV that breaks down up there?! I love your videos!

I was there at the end of May/beginning of June 2023. Weather sucked! Second day going to Denali Highway, had a wet snow at the end of the day. Next day, it snowed with snow on the ground. By the time we got to Fairbanks, it was around 60 and raining (snowed/rained all day). Going to Coldfoot and Prudhoe Bay was okay, but kinda cold going to Prudhoe Bay. Atigun Pass was 19 degrees when we went north. Going back, we ended up having to go back to Deadhorse when we were almost at Atigun Pass going south. Someone had a minor wreck, but he was injured enough to need a ride back in the chase truck. Next day, we got to Coldfoot. I chose to stay in the chase truck for that ride because of bad weather forecasted. When we got to Colfoot, it had been raining all day, and it rained all night into the next day with temps around 45. Dalton Highway was muddddd!!!! Almost went down. Rode from Coldfoot to Chena Hot Springs. Encountered three grizzlies together on the side of Dalton Highway. Luckily, they just wanted to say hi to me.

Hi Brian! 😀 Delighted that you enjoyed our video! 😀 I guess the title originates from the last line of the video "America's loneliest highway, one of the worlds world's most dangerous roads, and the best time of our lives". All the reports that we had studied prior venturing up the Dalton mentioned the challenges faced by bikers, all which we talk about on the way up but we don't try to make it more difficult than it was, we just tell it as we found it. However what no1 talks about is the comradery and bond you form with other bikers and the overwhelming sense of being alive after completing it. We are still friends with the people we met and we have a connection with each other that you only get when you have shared something really special. I hope that explains it better and I really hope you got all that from the video, as that was my intention. 😀 All the best J&D

What is your average speed on the longest gravel Dalton highway? Great video 👍

Hello Tod, and thanks very much for watching our videos! Hope you liked them all! To answer your question: We took 4 days to get from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay and back, stopping in Coldfoot twice, so we knew that we had time to stop, take pictures, video footage, drone shots and especially enjoy every second of this magnificent experience so our average speed was very slow!! Some people we met did it much faster just to take a picture in Dead Horse and drive back down on the same day, but that is not the way we like to travel. Are you planning to drive the Dalton next year? Best regards and Happy Christmas 🎄 J and D 👍

Yeah my goal rides up to Alaska from Nova Scotia, east coast of Canada next summer. Which month is better go up to Alaska on June or July or August? Thank you for your time.

@@toddturner7618 we arrived in Prudhoe Bay on the 9th of July, and as you could see from the video, the weather was excellent. We planned it that way because statistically, the first two weeks of July were more likely to be good, but we were lucky too🍀 July, in our opinion, is the month with the highest chance of decent weather 👌

So what are the things you reckon 'they' dont want us to know?
@JDOnTheRoad
@JDOnTheRoad 6 ай бұрын
Hi Steve! It's the punchline at the end. 😀 Everyone talks about how dangerous the road is 'the loneliest road', 'one of the most dangerous roads', but all the risk, the stress, the planning was totally worth it as it turned out to be the most amazing, soul cleansing, life changing and exhilarating trips of our lives where we made firm friends through bonding during our experience. We watched every Dalton Highway video we could before we left and not one of them spoke about this or prepared for such a monumental experience. I guess the spiritual message doesn't sell as well as the danger one. All the best J&D

Hi! Aw, it's kinda in the punchline but not everyone seems to get it. 😔 Everyone focuses on the Dalton being so challenging and dangerous, 'The Lonliest Highway in America, one of the worlds most dangerous roads, however for us it was the best time of our lives. No-one mentions the exhilaration you feel when you finish, the strong bond you form with the people you meet, the kind and considerate truck drivers and the laughs that you share etc That's it really! Hope you enjoyed the video anyway! All the best J&D

Hi Thewarhorse47. Thanks for watching our video! The punchline is at the end. Everyone talks about the dangers and challenges of the Dalton but no-one discusses the life changing, joyous event that it is where you find your inner strengths (song at the end) and form true friendships. That was our 'truth'. All the best J&D

"What they don't want you to know..." is a garbage title. " ... one of the most dangerous roads in the world..." is total bullshit. Y'all aren't "adventurers". Thousands, and I MEAN thousands of barely capable riders make the trip every year. There are lots of folks who do this trip on a bicycle, for god's sake. Get over yourselves.

Everyone talks about how dangerous the road is but no1 says that it will be a life changing event, of finding inner strengths and firm friends. In the end it's just a road, but the spiritual journey you go on is indescribable. Sorry if you didn't get that from it.
