Actually, in the original story that Disney adapted, Ursula wasn’t necessarily evil. She never tried to marry the prince and she even gave the little mermaid a chance to survived, when according to the original contract she should have died !
@localdreamer133 ай бұрын
Precisely! I did a project in undergrad on why modern fairytales always need a villain and the little mermaid was one of my prime examples. In the original, there wasn't a clearcut villain, unless you count the little mermaid herself because she put herself and her family at risk. In which we're taught a lesson about flawed humanity. But then you turn to the Disney version, and suddenly they have Ursula going back on deals and compromising the situation so that Ariel becomes a victim and faces no ultimate consequences for her harrowing choices. Same thing with Sleeping Beauty - in the original, it was some random old woman's spinning wheel, completely unintentionally done, but then later we get Maleficent who curses and coaxed Aurora into the act.

This is exactly why I love and respect Ursula as a Disney villain!! She never hid ANYTHING regarding the contract!! She said “Three days” noticed Ariel’s distracted, grabs her face and holds up three fingers “Got that? THREE days” turns on visual projector with rising and setting sun “WHEN THE SUN SETS ON THE THIRD DAY!!” She even has a vivid demonstration of the merfolk turning into seaweed, and has a whole garden of those folks IN HER FRONT LIVING ROOM WHERE ARIEL HAD TO SWIM THROUGH THEM!! It was as crystal as clear can get. No word play or hidden clause, Ariel got exactly what she was offered, to the point where even her father the king couldn’t break it. I’ve yet to see another Disney villain on par with that level of manipulation.

@@nidohime6233 It’s not like Ariel didn’t know that the deal was rigged when signing it. And if you think about it, tipping over a canoe and marrying the prince is honestly tame compared to what sabotage Ursula could’ve done with her magical abilities. She could’ve made Ariel ugly, crippled, or amnesiac. She could’ve locked her in her room, hypnotized her, or had her beaten, or even drowned. But she didn’t. She never restricted Ariel’s contact with prince Eric, or compromised her freedom to act. I’m just a fan of how Ursula stayed true to the explicit agreement. She didn’t do that whole ‘I’mma give you money if you shake my hand- psych! You’re a frog now, stuffed into a jar!!’ shtick. Or ‘Gimme the lamp and I’ll give you a reward-psych I stab you now!’ What Ursula offered was ‘I turn you into a mute human.’ And then she did just that.

Legal Eagle actually goes through why her father could have and should have broken the contract, mostly because if we assume merfolk have similar contract law to humans, there are so many ways in which that contract just plain isn't legally valid to begin with (you actually can't legally give up your voice or allow yourself to be held captive indefinitely or have to serve someone without compensation in the US and similar legal systems of contract law, which is based on English law. Unless merfolk abide by principles of fae law instead, which I suppose is possible, this is likely at least similar to their legal code. Also she is stated to not be an adult yet and thus can't legally be bound by the contract. Under fae law it varies, this could be very similar to English common law, or various older Celtic legal systems, or it could more match folklore where you can in fact trade away such things, but there are in fact strict limits on fae law. Sure you can trick someone into giving you their name, but you can't lie, or violate the explicit terms of the deal you made. Oaths are magically binding on both parties, not just one. With fae law, the king absolutely could have held a moot and determined if this was a binding oath or not if it was in question, or even ruled on it himself. There are also usually ways out of fae deals, if you are clever enough, and the king certainly would have been. So either it is under human style legal codes that likely determine this to not be a valid contract, or we are using fae style law in which it might be legally valid but Ursula probably couldn't have gotten away with all of what she did either and it likely wouldn't have held up to any loophole seeking or a moot or mer equivalent by anyone with any experience dealing with the fae. She _mostly_ stuck to the terms as stated, but we don't see all of them written down clearly, and the terms as stated and shown wouldn't stand up well to anyone skilled in human or fae style contract law, which really makes you wonder why King Triton doesn't have that skillset and doesn't have merlawyers with it.

The only "duress" she was under was whether or not to make the deal she _specifically_ went there intending to make, completely ignoring the entire song explaining the consequences of her choices. The only consequence to not signing, is that she _doesn't get to make the deal she came to make_ 🙄 Period. "If you really want to sign, knowing the consequences, please sign right now" that's it. No other threat. No manipulation. Ursula did not invite her over, didn't leave a flyer on her door, didn't send her a spam email on her shell phone, she was literally sitting at home, putting her face on, when Ariel showed up asking for things. She didn't write her up a new contract, she pulled out the standard boilerplate and had her sign it. If Ariel had decided "Actually it's not worth trading everything for this man", Ursula had no intention or threat of doing anything else to her except wishing her good night and good luck. The only "duress" here was from her own father who literally only told her "Stop going to the dangerous forbidden zone or else!" and then brought down the "or else" in the form of messing up her secret hidden room full of stolen forbidden treasure gathered during her dangerous and again, _forbidden _ trips to the illegal out-of-zone areas. Big Daddy didn't even give her a spanking for skipping out on the big important ceremony all her sisters prepared for to go against his direct orders infiltrating the off-limits areas. Basically zero consequences to her constant disobedience and treason. She was never in any danger from him, from anyone in the Kingdom, anywhere she wasn't explicitly told not to go she was perfectly safe and well cared for. She wasn't in any danger from Ursula whatsoever until she signed the contract giving up her rights and well-being as a deliberate act of defiance against her father, the King. She never even had a conversation with Eric and made him responsible for her entire life if he doesn't get into a relationship with her. Imagine if he'd had a childhood sweetheart? He was literally just some guy. He had no obligation to her, he never even met her while conscious. Bro was not even awake to consent to a relationship with her before she turned up mute and nude on his doorstep and her life already contracted to him without his knowledge. Imagine any other situation of a prince suddenly marrying a mute teen stranger he picked up off a beach with no background, no family, no idea where she came from or if she has normal adult brain function, given that she's illiterate, has no table manners, and tries to comb her hair with a dinner fork. Wtaf. Ursula shouldn't have needed magic, it makes no sense he would ever marry Ariel without knowing who she really was. Imagine other Royals coming to visit and just being like "Yeah my Queen can't quite get the hang of wearing shoes, and be careful, she completely freaks out whenever we eat seafood, not sure why, cause she can't talk or write at all. But y'know, we've got great chemistry 🤴🏻❤️" Ariel was really living that main character life and just expected all of reality to warp to fit her desires and expectations.

@redrasegarden that's part of the "how it should work vs how it actually works" debate. You honestly think every contract written is fair to both parties and no-one ever tries to screw over the other side? Ursula WANTS her to be a shrimp worm so she can manipulate Tritan. You think her contract is going to be fair? Ariel had every chance to read and then decide but she didn't. That's on her

Well she is the youngest, the education of the next heir is the top priority for royalty, so probably her 2 eldest sister at minimum would have been the one with the best education amongst her siblings.. she is technically too far in the line of succession that they might not have needed to focus education on her.. she is basically free of whatever royal duties she may have had.. This is only If and only the heir follows by oldest child.. it is possibly different if its sorta like the last one standing..

Part of Your World is legit Ariel being an aspiring terrestrial archeologist, anthropologist, or biologist. Of course she fell in love with the first human she saw! If they got married she could do a longitudinal study on him. Also, the catalyst is her father destroying all of her research. The best revenge for her is to get legs, marry a wealthy test subject, and use his wealth to start a new collection. The marriage thing was just a way to enable her hyper fixation (sorry Eric).

In the original fairy tale the sea witch (none of the characters had names) was a neutral character, she told the little mermaid what she gets once the contract is done, with no tricks or sabotage unlike the Disney movie. The farthest thing she went throw was cutting her sisters hair as payment for the dagger the little mermaid had to use to kill the prince and use his blood to become a mermaid again.
