I just bought one of these! A 2009 FG XR8 sedan in manual, with the 290 boss motor. Factory standard. I’m so in love with it, all 6 gears give me thrills that can’t be explained. Can’t wait to tweak some things and upgrade the exhaust. Nothing I love more than the sound of an old school Aussie Muscle Car v8! Proud to own a piece of history!

Love the FG XR8, best mod you can do is new diff gears to 3.9 or even 4.11. Gap Sauce on YT has a 290 in his GT and it runs 11's with some other tasteful mods 👌

Love your rant about the loss of v8’s, you’re a true blue Aussie if i ever saw one mate. Its such a crying shame that they’re slowly dying away especially in Aus, the Australian automobile identity was synonymous with v8 falcons and commodores for decades. It’s depressing how things have gone.

Great review of the XR8, Ross. I like the colour. You don’t see many on the road. They definitely have gone up in the last 2 years. That one would be a really good buy for someone. I love the exhaust on it. It’s a shame the MK2 didn’t get an XR8.

I have a 6 speed manual rapid yellow 2005 XR8 sedan that has had extractors full stainless 2.5" exhaust cold air intake and a tune to 330rwhp which sound epic when you give it some, bags and pops when you down shift so engaging and only has 102,000k's I agree that there not as quick as a turbo 6 but I've driven a XR6 turbo ( stock ) and to be honest it did feel a bit quicker but that crappy sound track and being auto there was no comparison in the fun factor. Great honest review Ross keep up that good work.

I have the exact same car in Perth. I bought it a year ago. Black headliner too. Rapid Yellow, 6sp, cammed, s/s exhaust, 330rwhp tune... 125kkms. Pops downshifting. I add two Black stripes to to side. I love it! ❤

Another awesome review Ross. Might not be as quick as an XR6 Turbo, but as anyone can hear, they have a very unique and glorious rumble and are still quick enough for many folks anyway😁 A real shame the XR8 disappeared from the FG range after 2010 for sure. However it's place was effectively taken by the FPV GS between 2010 and 2014. Now if you could find 1 of those with a Manual to review, it would be great to see how you rate it against this car man. Keep up your great work🤘👍

Great Review Ross Reviews. I enjoyed this video. It is sad that they canceled the V8’ it’s disappointing that the XR8 wasn’t there for the MK2 update. The FG XR8 is from 2008 to 2010. My blue fg xr8 with the zf auto was quick 5.4 sec to 100kmh and stock for stock beat many stock FG xr6t. All I had was 3inch custom cat back and cai. Not tuned but was fast. Never lost to a Ve ss or a vf ss with the 270kw engines. And did 13.5 down the 1/4. So definitely not slow in auto form

These were out 08/09. Released in May 2008 but full-scale production of the FG Range began in March. The XR8 was discontinued in April 2010 due to Euro4 emissions regulations. Standard wheels were 18" Honeycomb style. With the option of a 19" 5 Spoke wheel as part of the "Luxury Pack" which netted you leather trim, premium sound and dual zone climate control also. Or they could be ordered separately on there own. Production numbers on the FG XR8 Sedan was around about 4000 units, Unsure on what the Manual/Auto split was.

I have an FG N/A manual (from new) and still pretty good for a non turbo, but I am a big fan of the V8's i also have a 5.0ltr super charged GS was my favourite car to drive until she was T-boned a couple of weeks ago but she will be fixed, love your reviews Ross, keep up the good work.

The FG XR8 was a Great Performing and highly underrated car, although like all BOSS 5.4L engines they do not really come on song until after 3500-4000 RPM, and requires progressive accelerator modulation (does not enjoy simply flooring the accelerator) and a different oversteering driving style to get it to really perform (none of which he was doing), - Love his comments about the "Green Haired Fairies" dictating how the rest of us should run our lives - wee need to ush Back against this Green Madness crap !

Agreed re fairies. It’s just total arrogance on their part to dictate what we drive. A bus is 3-4 times larger yet gets their endorsement yet a tradie fixing their home gets told to drive a golf cart instead

Awesome and honest review John! If you are going to invest in one of these and spend $$$ on supercharging etc, you might as well spend the extra ang get the FG-X XR8 SC. My BF Ghia ZF6 - N/A 6 does 0 - 100 at the same time. It's a shame that they could not wake the V8 up a little more.

The boss engines have easily got to be one of the best sounding injected v8s ford has ever made. Sure their just a old basic block with quad cams and no vct. Their not a fast motor, but their also not a slow motor. Their sort of in the middle in that ""ehhh goes aight""" range, but my god they sound insance when their got a good exhaust system. In stock form the xr6 turbo has more low to mid power but the xr8 has more top. Downside is its only for 2000 rpm if that where at the barra turbo is 4000 rpm better off hence why they feel and are faster. Either way the xr8 is still a great car, still goes well, and is still fun to go through the gears. Definetly a cruiser and they do that very well. Once again. Awesome review Ross 🤘🤘🤘

It's kind of surprising that FG XR8's especially were quite rare when the VE SS Commodores were selling like hotcakes... I think the Barra motor essentially killed the V8 Falcon, except at the very end...

A friend of mine has one of these, bought brand new in purple with the 6 speed. I think he often sometimes wishes he'd waited until the Miami came out as it's in my opinion a better engine. His is 100% stock, so I think these days, if he hangs onto it, it'll do well in terms of value.

Nice Jon, an awesome cruiser indeed I remember back in 2012 I actually contemplated getting one of these, but ended up following what everyone else was doing and got the MKII XR6T (which I later sold for the FGX XR8)

The emissions regulations had a bit to do with it but I think the main reason was the cannibalisation of sales from other models in the lineup. Consumers started cottoning on to the fact that the XR6 Turbo was the better performance buy by the time the FG started production, so with that I don't think Ford Australia were selling many XR8s to begin with. Add to the mix the performance brand FPV introducing the GS in 2009, which was basically a XR8 with FPV badges and some decals, so you basically had two direct competitors for the XR8 from the same manufacturer before you even get to the VE SS Commodore (which had zero competitors within it's own lineup - there weren't any bargain bin HSVs or alternative performance Commodores), of which the XR8 had nowhere near the same badge prestige as the SS by that point. The sales by early 2010 showed all of this was the case, so the XR8 was quietly cut from the lineup so that the new 5.0 SC V8 wouldn't need to be complied for the Falcon as the XR8 was the only model that used it by that point, so it only needed complying for the small volume manufacturer (FPV) instead. Consumers who wanted a V8 Falcon were then pushed to the FPV range, which I'm sure Ford were also more than happy with as they were charging more money for those models anyway.

Having owned both the FG XR8 and the BF XR8 which I still own,both with the ZF auto what I can say is you really do notice those extra 30kw of power. That said,I find the styling of the B series cars much more appealing,and that's why I kept the BF. That,and the fact that my FG was this same funky blue colour. Should've been grabber or true blue. This colour almost looks like it's faded from new. Another Boss Ross review 👍

Great review Ross.I remember reading wheels magazine review of the FG XR8 V The XR6 TURBO in 2010. All were manuals.The XR8 did 5.8 sec to 100 and the turbo was 5.4.Not that much differences However the auto turbos were faster again getting into the high 4s to 100.My next door neighbour used to have a GT Falcon 5th anniversary edition.Which had the GT_P Brembo upgrade.It had the last and most powerful N/A V8 which was the Boss 315.Which is actually the same power output as the supercharged boss 315 in the FPV Utes.And l can say it was a weapon.He had taken the limiter of the car.It had a top speed of 320 kph.Thats not a miss print.

I think expecting a V8 to be fast by virtue of being a V8 is a misconception. V8's CAN go fast, so too can every other engine configuration. A V8 is an old school engine, it used to represent luxury, style and opulence. It's about going somewhere comfortably and having more than you should need. It's about taking your time to enjoy the drive and to enjoy the theatrics of the engine. My EF Fairmont with a worked 5L sounds like it goes a rocket but it doesn't. I had it worked so it makes driving slowly more enjoyable. Treating something like a race car that isn't a race car is really embarrassing to see, and especially more so when it's someone in a V6 Commodore pretending to have a V8.

I wonder if they were built for a couple of years was for homologation purposes (Supercars)?. Aside from that I read somewhere ages ago (?) that the Boss 290 didn't meet Australia's new emission standards and that's why the FGX got the Miami 5.0. Interesting to find out I guess.

Definitely wasn't about xr8s dude. Was all diesel truck emissions going to euro iv then v. Ford had given up on the mod motor to be fair by 2010, they did come out in 1994! And since your point about them being slow is there, it's why they didn't sell vs an xr6t especially given the Miami was coming out the next year.

Yes, fuel emissions is given as the reason but fuel economy and performance was below par compared to its rivals and on house alternative.

This car would've been awesome to have in the US if Ford (North America) had brought it over from Australia. That supercharger whine and 6-speed manual transmission and 4-doors is a perfect combo. I would go as far as saying that the Ford Falcon XR8 would be an equivalent to a Mustang in North America in sedan format with muscle car performance if the Mustang had a 4-door sedan variant on the Falcon XR8's platform or the new S650 generation Mustang's platform or even going as far as combining bith the Falcon XR8's and S650 gen Mustang's platform into one to give the US something as outstanding as this. I would be all over it in a heartbeat to buying one if it did.

Great review mate. Cant stand those blue haired fairies either. I had a nitro blue FG xr8 for about 4 weeks before I upgraded to the f6310. Paid $14,000 for it, ZF and 280ks on the clock. Drove great. Sold it for $19,500 within 2 weeks of listing it

it's not only the XR8 that has gone up in value but V8's in general have gone up look at the price gap between a 6cyl AU Fairmont and a V8 AU Fairmont the 6cyl is 2 - 5K and the V8's start at 10k

Ford V8'S always sound good with an exhaust👌. There was a build series of two Ute's sponsored by Sparesbox, there were two team's, Bennys Custom Works & Motive DVD, Motive DVD built a nice FG XR8 with a supercharger.

Then when FGX came along and FPV was discontinued, the XR8 got the 335kw tune from the previous GT as per FG XR8 and FG GS both did.

The GS was also avaliable in Mk1. Separate model line, in Mk1 it was a BOSS 302 engine then it went to a 315 Miami in Mk 2.

@@TheFordMan888 Mk1 GS was a limited edition special model. Mk2 was a regular model and as per my post was intended to be badged as a Falcon XR8 until a late change had it released as the FPV GS.

I'm not sure if anyone has found how many FG XR8's were made but I do have official number for total built with the boss 290, Ford had made 1832 total, and I'm not sure if this stat is just for the FG XR8 manuals or all the FG's but they had made 542 manual versions

Hearing ya mate, I love my v8's ,it's the sound the torque and the roar when your on it. I've got 5 of em from a 7.3 powerstroke, ls1,ls3,lsa and l86 and all moded. The v8's days are numbered so get one and enjoy while you can.

honestly Ross money talks the power these Fords came from factory pretty insane its a 5.4 litre if Ford had invested more money in their interiors and interface they would of even been better cars the Gt 335 took it to another level

I bought a bf xr8 mk2 back in 2013 with 60k on it for 20k, used it as a work car and daily for 9/10 years and recently just sold it for 17k so i lost 3k on it over that period of time lol. to be honest these cars are great back when they have low mileage but as they get closer to the 200k mark the power does fade, terrible on fuel. Maybe its just me and i out grew it but i was getting on average 100k's to 14-15.5L of fuel. Now i have a 2017 vauxhall 1.4L turbo which has a holden badge slapped on it, lol.

I totally agree, boss's aren't fast. Anyone saying stock or stock its faster, thats a technicality on paper, its slower (esp manual vs auto 6T). Then again in the grand scheme, they're not a "slow" car, certainly still above most cars you'll see day to day. I've got a BF XR8 in a manual and absolutely love driving it around even after having a 6T also. So much more fun to cruise/drive around in, sounds better, feels better, just a better drive, a good intake makes them sound amazing coupled with the exhaust. But i will disagree, it certainly doesn't need $30k to make the Boss a powerhouse. Maybe if you're rebuilding one for big boost or whatever, but a 260 and 290 handle/love some low level boost, stock for stock totally agree but these days the barrier to entry level boosting a boss is so much lower than it was say 5-10 years ago, esp if you're happy going with good second hand gear (i picked my current V2 Vortech up for $1200 with 5000km's on it about 5 years ago lol)

Great review! The Boss is a real slug up to 3500 rpm but from 4000rpm+ mine explodes with power and there doesn't seem to be any let up ...top end is incredible when the engine really opens up. Hey Ross.... Keep up the great work mate..... Fellow or 'would be' Boss owners don't be despondent. Those 2009 and 2010 FG XR8s might be a tad slow. I know of a particular 2008 FG XR8 manual with bolt on's and a home made tune driven by an old fluffer that's a bit quicker. This 2008 FG XR8 of his can do a 0-60kph in 2.46 sec and 0-100kph in 5.57 sec(0-60kph for this run was 2.75 sec). On the street with well worn cheap arse 245/40 19in tyres, no wheel spin in 1st gear. Just gotta walk those Boss' off the line quickly, high rev launches + street tyres = smoke. So, based upon his numbers, this old fluffer estimates that with a 0-60 kph time of 2.46 sec his FG XR8 would be good for a 5.2 sec 0-100kph. This was all before a Boss 315 twin throttle body/plenum setup was bolted on, which adds about 15 rwkw max. He also acknowledges that his N/A 5.4 quad cam would have only about 280-300 rwkw max depending on ambient temperature. This old fluffer is really shaking his head in disgust at the time lost with the 1st-2nd gear change, with wheel spin and all. He may be able to tune it out by adjusting the throttle blade lag application for 2nd gear. He salivates at the prospect of having this engine setup with a ZF behind it though, the silky smooth 1st-2nd gear change and all. Maybe a 'very' high 4 sec 0-100kph would be possible with that ZF setup. Below are some other statistics from his Data File, all times were captured using the Innovate LM-2 Kit. 2.24 sec 60-100kph 2nd gear 2.86 sec 60-110kph 2nd gear 3.19 sec 80-120kph 3rd gear(non public road)

@@RossReviewsau mmmm whats interesting is how little is done to that car, no crazy 40k engine build, no boost makers and it regularly lays waste to big power barras at breaky laps. I'm not going to be one of those "5.4s go great guys" cause we know they are a peaky slug at best. However it would appear by gap sauces GT that there may just be a decent bolt on NA path that you could go down.... because that's all that is on his, just bolt on consisting of, cams, pulleys, intake spacer, cold air intake, tb, meth injection, headers exhaust, tune.

5.4 Boss Engines wasn't selling to the level as 4.0 Barra. That's one of the reason Ford Stopped producing XR8 Boss. Ford made GS 315 with 5.0 Coyote / Miami Engine Super-Charged. Then made XR8 Sprint's with 5.0 Coyote Super-Charged Engines. Didn't Know the Greenies also stopped 5.4 Boss Engine production. Climate Change is Horse S^&T. Any-Who now Dayz there is Ford Mustang GT for V8 Lovers. But the Economy is bad

can your Astra turbo tow 2.4 ton on a super hot day? the XR8 during this era was not the speed machine that was left to the XR6 Turbo, the XR8 was all about highway towing. if you really wanted a fast Ford V8 during this time frame you were better off with the FPV GT.

@@351tgv I don't actually own an astra turbo but totally agree with your point than an astra is not the best tow vehicle. A diesel ute would be better for towing with it's broad range of torque especially as high loads on petrol cars means the engine run rich to protect the cats from over-temping which would degrade the already poor fuel economy (I tuned petrol engines for an OEM manufacturer for over 10 years)
