In the Lord of the Rings films or Lord of the Rings on Prime series, you might think that the Lord of the Rings occurs on a planet called Middle-Earth. But actually, Middle-Earth is just a continent, like Aman (where Valinor is situated). The planet goes by a different name, Arda, and the universe is known as Ea. Today we're going to explain the differences between all of these different places.

Arda isn’t special because of Melkor, it’s special because it was chosen by Ilúvatar to be the habitation of his Children, Elves and Mankind.

There is nothing saying that Elves and Man didn't exist on EVERY world; but Melkor only existed in Arda.

"Arda, or 'The Kingdom of Arda' (as being directly under the kingship of Eru's vice-gerent Manwe) is not easy to translate, since neither 'earth' nor 'world' are entirely suitable. Physically Arda was what we should call the Solar System." MR, Athrabeth, Note 2 "It is certainly the case with the Elvish traditions that the principal part of Arda was the Earth (Imbar 'The Habitation')."* op.cit. *Ambar is also used for the Earth.

How i always think of the removal of Aman from Arda was if you imagine it being flat then everything forming into a sphere except Aman stayed where it was and in its place on the globe is a new Landmass (the America's). When mortals sail west they carry on sailing around the world until they hit the American continents but when the elves sail back to Valinor at some point in the Atlantic they enter a mist in which the seas of Arda drop away beneath them and they carry on onto the seas of Arda, they hear singing and the mists draw back and they finally behold Aman.

Well... except no. At the breaking of the world (SPOILER ALERT) after Númenor was destroyed, Eru Ilúvatar raised Aman/Valinor from the circles of the earth into a plane above the world where only the Elves and select special non-Elves could go. So no, Aman isn't North America.

Aman is Avalon from the folklore. The numenoreans called it Avalonne, hinting the resemblance. Even in arthurian myths it's a land beyond our world when the hero goes to rest. It's also called the Island of Mist

@the_real_littlepinkhousefly

I think you meant *allegory* -- and yes, he hated MOST allegory. He was wary of people seeing his works as an allegory of war (the World Wars in particular) or of his Catholic faith. But he even admits in letters that he did fall into that in some ways, and it's hard as a person of Christian faith to not see some very close similarities between Tolkien's writings and his Catholic Christian faith; likewise it's hard not to see the themes of industrialization = bad and rurual/small village life = good. Sometimes writers still make good things out of concepts they don't care for. ^_^
