No license plates. No storing a trailer. No separate tires to worry about maintaining. No wiring connections to worry about. Still half the overall length than with a trailer. IDK, the extender sound like WAY less of a headache just for a kayak or two. Just park backwards on a side parking spot and keep them over grass if youre worried about them in a lot.

I covered my extender and on other car roof rack with pool noodles and wrap the whole pipe or metal parts where the load is going to rest ,wrap with gorilla tape ,around and around till it becomes a solid almost rubberized tube ,covering where ever there is a noodle and the noodle is no longer seen and protected from breaking in pieces , it works awesome to protect any load load, helps not to skid , cushions and keeps completely quiet from wind while driving ,forget about painting or scratching the rack or the load, best thing I ever did !...you can also use pipe protector sold at home deport or lowes for plumbing but the trick is to wrap it with lots of tape, maybe first with duct tape and finish it with gorilla tape , that tape is super tough and will last forever.

For those that have the vertical arms at the end of the extender, you can double or triple a ratchet strap across the end and make a web cradle and suspend the yaks. It is much less likely to make a dent.

I bought a 12 foot Talon Eagle while in Florida and brought it back to Michigan. I stopped for 2 days at a friends house in North Georgia, and I left the kayak on the truck extender the whole time without a dent to the kayak. Before loading, I went to Bass Pro Shop and bought a large pool noodle. I cut it to the length I needed, then split it lengthwise. I placed it on the top rail of the rack, and trimmed around the upright support so it fit perfect. Then loaded my yak. It worked perfectly. I hope this helps.

@lmychajluk7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. I've been thinking about getting a kayak, and wondering how to carry it w/ my F150 short bed. Thinking about roof racks and a rear loader (like the Rhino Racks system), or maybe just going the extender route (especially for local carry), and trying to decide what would be best for dealing with a ~100lb boat (looking at Pro Angler or Predator). Loading and unloading and having a secure load are important, but you bring up a good point about dealing with parking lots as well. As for the extender, I saw one guy just zip-tied a pool noddle to the cross bar as some padding, Get a nice bright color and it should work pretty well. If I was stacking kayaks like you have, I would also use pool noddles as pads between the yaks, and it should help with your dents. (Edit) - Ok, didn't read the other posts before making the pool noddle comments...

See frame 2:26/9:33. The way you have it set up now is potentially dangerous and you actually could kill someone travelling behind you when, not if, your kayak falls off at highway speed. That is the top of what you should worry about and act on it like yesterday. Watch how to properly and safely secure a kayak to a truck bed extender then follow it diligently. There are no shortcuts to safety. If you do happen to kill someone on the highway, the investigation will reveal your negligence, and it will cost lotsa money and time. Not being snarky here buddy, but being real. That is one dangerous set up.
