David recounts his run-ins with various unions, which were not very pleasant experiences! David is no fan of unions as a result. According to Unions, they have your back if you get into trouble. So basically if you are dishonest or incompetent, they got you...but for legitimate issues, all they have is excuses... Have you had similar experiences? Tell us in the comments section below!

Michigan is right to work. I use to be pro union but no longer. I was tired of the Union representing only a portion of the membership. I don’t need them to tell me how to vote nor should I pay for some idiot that can’t show up to work on time to get their job back. I the Union I was with on top of dues we were taxed for arbitrations even know the Union would announce their large bank balance at the meetings every month.

At UPS in Lansing Michigan l had a disagreement with a steward and he told me "if you ever get in trouble with management, l will make sure you get fired". That was not much of a threat because his representation was terrible anyway.

The CEO is hired by the board of directors who are elected by the shareholders meeting. One share equals one vote. To keep up share value the company makes profits. The profits come from you labor. That the labor theory of value first expressed by Adam Smith and later Karl Marx. So to get hired and make those big CEO bucks you must get every last dime of profit out of the employees. If the can save a dime from say 10,000 employees by turning a screw left instead of right that is $1,000 in profit. A righteous man would not last for 10 minutes as a CEO.

Ive had quite a few non union jobs for years until I came across a job in a work place that was unionized. I worked in a RTW state with low union membership and the working conditions were very unsafe. Not to mention, management was nearly hostile with all of the workers. Since I have joined a union, I KNOW that I have a voice and I get raises on a regular basis along side everyone else. Management stays in their place and respects us as well as safe working conditions. Im really really happy :)

Oh I had similar situation In New York, on an old job...... there was this Union employee that would take extended breaks, “a paid hour” break before clocking out for his shift, and the option of what tasks he could and not do which meant that we were stuck with the hard labor because me and my team were non union, we were new hires without enough time to join the union, and I didn’t mind doing the work because come on it’s a job I am there to work...... oh and the union would go above and beyond to protect this guys laziness, ever since Then I hated unions, I hate their employees and yea in my experience they are just there to collect a buck

I can tell you that NALC (the letter-carriers union for USPS) is excellent. The problem is that most carriers are too scared of management to take advantage of it. But they can definitely help you. It does help to have several stewards in the same station that are willing to band together. Management does have the right to mismanage, but we can file on it and get paid. You just have to be willing to write statements and put your name on them.

jeffw1267 that's the problem with the usps unions, it's all about the money. Dues money and getting paid for grievances. This has made usps unions very corrupt and workers feel entitled and have gotten lazy. workers feel as though they don't have to work hard because they can file a grievance if confronted about their work ethic. Don't even get me started about USPS. I'm employed there right now and have never seen Americans with such poor work ethic and idleness than USPS workers in my 25+ years of working. The union has made the USPS a very hard place to work. A corrupt organization through and through!
@kimobrien.
@kimobrien. 6 жыл бұрын
Workers at USPS go 'postal' for a reason. Once a manger has it in for you they just never stop. When managers break the rules than grievances are filed. Management breaks them on purpose just to see what will happen or who they can intimidate. Why work hard or do anything extra if all that happens is they punish you anyway? The more automated the post office got the more mind numbing the jobs got. Years ago it was the pigeon hole and they always hired extra help for the Christmas rush. For years they had people siting in front of letter handling machines and you just so much time to read and type the zip code while the letter was move by with a mechanical hand. I don't care what they pay I would never want that job. You probably go home mumbling numbers.

The MIT Sloan School of management says that union shops have lower turnover and training costs but it never makes up for the lower profits that a union shop makes. If you belong to a union than the union is you not something separate from you. You and your coworkers are what makes the union what it is. We struck Westinghouse in 1976. The bosses talked about how they would cut a hole in the fence because it would be a long strike and we would be starved out. We were all out 41,000 of us for two weeks nationwide. When we came back we held our heads high and had a $1.00 an hour raise. www.fordlibrarymuseum.gov/library/document/0204/1513072.pdf

I've never worked for a union, but I've worked with union workers. My experience with them is they're the laziest, dumbest people I know. I can give you example after example of what I'm talking about. I guess that's what happens when you have a mama looking out for you at work. At least that's what the union claims they do but only a very few realize what's really going on. Most are content to be able to slack off in exchange for paying union dues. In my opinion, unions are an extra layer of mismanagement paid for by both the worker and company. I liken it to health insurance companies who suck up big bucks and drive our health care costs up and up.

Yeah the government allowed some crooks to take over some of the unions, but as a concept and generally they have done great things. You like how many hours you work? How safe your workplace is? Your wage? Your rights? Your protections? Thank unions. The modern work place is the way it is thanks to unions.

So, what is the next option to unions? It's a known fact that you can't make a descent living or save for retirement on the good will of an employer. In fact, when a union is voted out, wages and benefits go down no matter how hard you work. We need laws that force employers to provide compensation based on the health of a company. Surely we all know that an owner/operator should be well-off. But big multimillion dollar companies should be legislated into fair compensation. I must say: I have had some grievances with union ways, but what other options do we have? The poorer are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer now. So the "union" system isn't working for the Western world any more. What do you do?
@nateellington1977
@nateellington1977 7 жыл бұрын
in what ive seen in my industry, yes union workers get paid some more then their non-union counterparts, but dont work all the time! The higher rates to the client whoever that is means most of the jobs are govermant related, or tied to a city or municipality to be able to absorb the extra, and those jobs arent always avaliabile. The workers get put on a list and have to wait until the next job, and have to take unimployment (which is markedly less) in the meantime. As an employer that is non-union i really dont see how we would survive in the competeive market with the union wages and benifits that undoubtidly would have to paid....we would be out of work completely as our prices and bid numbers would be way to high to compete. Just the reality.

The company I work for has union shops and non union shops. The non union shops start out almost $7 less on the hr have no pension and are way less productive. The non union shops have a very high turn over as well with no pension. Unions have one benefit that no one wants to talk about the guy that's been there 20 yrs has no fear of losing his job to a newbie so he will train him better show him all the tricks and secret that his has pick up throughout his time. The non union shops have poor training because that same guy with 20 yrs make way more money than the new guy and if he teaches him everything he know he will find himself replaced by someone that can do his job for less money. Union shops are by far better trained and more productive than non union shops. With all that being said the lazy union members are a little lazier than non union lazies but there are far fewer.

True enough that not all unions are created equal. There are some decent paying jobs connected with unions. Nevertheless, thank you for at least making a viable argument, instead of just being ugly like some of the other commenters.

The first question I have is how come the company has both? Why isn't your union fighting to take the non union shops in? Also business schools say that despite the lower turnover and better training in union shops from a profit point of view going nonunion is always more profitable.
@damanhouston1704
@damanhouston1704 6 жыл бұрын
Kim O'Brien some shops just don't want to be in the union. Most of the union shops within the company where union shops before a large company bought them and some dropped the union once said company bought there shop. Business school teaches you about how to rip a business from a person once he or she has already built that business and how to turn ppl into numbers and puts profits above everything even quality. Speaking of profits the union shops in the company I work for are the most profitable the company tells us this and still tries to brake them because it would mean even more profits for them but the don't realize those shops would become just another company shop with high turnover and badly trained unprofessional employees and would make less profits because productivity would be down. There margin on the profits would be greater by over all they would lose money. Ex: 4million in sales. 1 million in expenses that's 3 million in profits or 75 % that's a union shop. Non union 3 million in sales 750000 in expenses. That's a 78% profit. Company see made more of a percentage off non union but totally overlooks the union shop made more money so even though the union shop made more money the non union shop is more profitable on the less money it makes only in percentage. That's a business school lesson for you.

They broke the union so bad it wouldn't even enforce the contract they would brake it on a daily basis and you tell the rep and nothing would happen. You one day say fuck it they want to play games I going read this contract and enforce every little rules we got just to piss them off and watch the management head explode and try to fire you because you letting everyone know how strong the union is and if we just stood together we could get the old company hugging higher ups in the union out and make it ours and force company to pay us more and still have all these protections.

Sorry u had such a horrible experience with your unions but overall as long as big company's and crazy right wingers hate unions.... I'm 100% for them. Like any other organization there is corruption etc... But unions not only created the middle class... Weekends.. Vacations...8 hr work days.... They also were heavily involved in huge political issues like... Woman's right to vote... Aid for education... Civil rights etc. keep posting videos dood bc love listening to ur take on things... But unions.... Overall we need collective bargaining to get even the smallest of concessions from these company's....they never voluntarily give anything to employees.... what makes you think the industrial revolution stopped child labor? They could and would just as easily had kids running the machines. The experiences you had are a nightmare man

sorry buddy but i am a local uaw vice president and sorry you had a bad experience with the union you had. in my local union all of our members we try to take care of but sometimes our member's are in the wrong and we have to tell them that but when the company has done something to our member and has wronged them we stand up for our membership. Our officers have taken an oath to our people and i for one keep my oaths. but i have to say i live in a state were it has right to work. and for you people that don't know you can op out of the union but what they don't tell you people is that the union still has to represent the people that op out to. now does anyone think that is right? so it is ok to go to a lawyer to be represented in court and use his or her's services and then when he or she takes care of your issue you decide you are not going to pay them. that is what our government is doing to us in case you don't know. Does our state representatives do this i think not! we pay them for their representation. but they have the nerve to push this on us. wake up people. just an fyi .think about it.

To say that unions had nothing to do with the end of child labor is stupid. Unions were formed by those who fought for a better work place. Child labor was a result of industrial revolution because all the factories needed workers and mothers and fathers were not paid enough to support themselves.

The Federal child labor laws were not enacted into place until 1938 with the passage of the Fair Standards Labor act. This is when the big battles of the CIO were taking place. The Chevy door hinge mad a good anti cop weapon during the sit down strikes. in 1934 Minneapolis was known as a open shop paradise by the time Teamsters Local 544 and the General Strike was through not a single Truck, Gas station attendant or Boss limoscene moved without a Teamster at the wheel, at the gas station or on the loading dock. It was called Minneapolis communism and it put food on the table for a whole city in the misted of the Great Depression.

Unions are like churches, all aren't bad, it's just very hard to find a good one. I don't like unions, I think I'm man enough to handle my own problems or find another job. I understand that employees are more important than employers, with that knowledge I know my worth, and don't need a union in my check every two weeks like they child support.

Perhaps where you are, but I have seen them out with the boot for the relief fund. Keep in mind I used to live on the east coast, and out there, New York/New Jersey/Mass union employees have ripped off their funding on occasion and left them hanging, (which is about as dirty as it gets).

Staying in one Industry only works for some workers. How many workers have had their jobs replaced by machines after unionization? Coal miner in the 1950's were replaced with the longwall machines. Dock workers were replaced with containerization. Auto workers were replaced by robotic arms. The private pension plans, healthcare insurance, and supplemental unemployment all looked good when negotiated but if its only with one industry or one plant its can be easily taken back. Time for the unions to lower the drawbridges and bring the rest of us back in.

Right to work was part of the Taft Hartley 'slave labor' act passed in 1947. Initially the union's vowed to fight it. However post war prosperity and the housing breaking of the AFL-CIO eventually lead to just continually complaining about it.

Unions have some benefits, but they're more trouble than they're worth. I was in teachers unions in 2 different jobs and all they did was protect the lazy tenured workers and prevented the good ones from being able to get raises and bonuses.

California labor law covers most labor laws , OSHA will take care of any safety issues, free market will determine wages. Most unions are weak, they want your dues but dont want to enforce safety or wages. Now in CA you can opt out.Which is good, invokes union to do better contracts, or they will lose workers. I can and do rep myself better than union rep. Only union worth a damn is the TEAMSTERS, PERIOD.....or Employee Association.
