The story I learned was that Ursula was once a beautiful mermaid with a silver tail but the people hated that she killed animals for ingredients in magic so they banished her. She had a cave filled with ingredients for magic and she always sat on this rock that you could see the shore from. One day she saw a man and fell in love with him so, she used her magic to give herself legs and unlike the movie, she still had her voice. The only thing that would happen is that every step she took it would feel like a thousand knives were stabbing her in the feet and if the man she loved married someone else she would either have to kill the man on the night he was married and return or she would turn to sea foam. She did it and got legs. She changed her name to Vanessa and fell in love with the man and the man became her friend. The man never told her that he had a girlfriend whom he was engaged to and when she came back to get married Vanessa (Ursula) was emotionally damaged and she would have done anything to get him back but he married the woman he was engaged to and so on the night of there marriage, she killed the man in his sleep, changed her name back, and came back to the ocean and instead of her beautiful tail, there were eight gross black tentacles.

Hi The Things! I have a few theories of my own about Ursula, and one in particular I think seems realistic. My theory goes along with the "Daddy's Little Angel" backstory. It states that Ursula was very jealous of her older sisters. What if Vanessa's appearance and name was inspired by Ursula's oldest sister? It makes sense from a symbolic stand point. She was going to get her revenge, become royalty in a kingdom where she was much more appreciated, and become queen of the sea as well. Why not steal the name and physical beauty of the person she originally hated and envied the most? Just a thought!

Vanessa is Ursula pre-banning. Her real name is probably Vanessa. It would make most sense, then she looks more like King Triton, he had brown hair in the prequel. Well now I've been thinking. What if Vanessa is Elsa and Anna's mom? They don't share very similar features, but it is possible. I saw this one fan theory that Elsa and Anna's parents were on their way to the wedding of Rapunzel and Eugene. That voyage was technically from Arendelle, but the fjords in the movie are very similar to that of Norway. Now, Tangled is set in a fake country called Corona, but because the village seems very German, and the fact that the fairy tale is German, means that the voyage could've very well been between those two countries. Now, in the middle of that is Denmark. When the ship goes down, it would've been right around there. But all of the scenes in the Little Mermaid that are on land suggest that Atlantica is located near Denmark. So the ship that Ariel salvages human things in could've belonged to Elsa and Anna's parents. In addition, there is a version where Elsa's parents didn't die. They lived on a DESERT ISLAND* where they gave birth to Tarzan. So where does this tie in? Our theorist here suggests that Vanessa (Or in my theory, Elsa and Anna's mom) is actually stranded on an island when Ursula meets her. That could very well be Tarzan's island. So that is why Ursula chose Vanessa to turn into. It wasn't because Ursula killed her, it was because everyone else knew her as dead. That took way too long.

On the Vanessa's looks note, if you compare other versions of the story you'll notice that the prince mistakes another girl as being his rescuer, after only getting a quick glimpse of her before succumbing to what I always believed to be a fever induced black out. Since Disney was not going the same route as the original, they didn't want to introduce another character in the prince's "coming to" scene. You'll notice how dark Ariel's hair is in that moment, with the rising sun behind her, she almost looks like Vanessa. Keep in mind that when Eric meets the newly legged Ariel, he recognizes her as the woman who saved him, only dismissing her because of her lack of current vocals. So when Ursula decides to step in, she chooses a form that is close enough to Ariel's to be mistaken for her in that moment. Ursula of course having been watching Ariel and seeing that exchange through her eels. Again, Disney doesn't want to go down the same road as the original so they add in the enchantment. So if the enchantment exists, why does Ursula bother with the form? Because she had to capture his vision long enough for the spell to take root. Magic has its own set of rules. As for being Triton's sister, why not? The octopus form, or so I always thought, was a result of the use of dark magics. It is like how if you are ugly on the inside it starts to show on the outside. The darker her soul became with hate and greed, the more her body twisted. This is of course destroyed with the deleted song which I didn't know existed until right now. (I bought TLM2 on vhs when it came out, I didn't own a dvd player yet.) So with the song in play as cannon, I have to believe that Posiedon was seduced by a dark hearted mermaid who was in reality twisted and octopian, but wearing a glamour so he could not tell. She bore him two daughters, who were at birth, normal, healthy mermaids, but their mother twisted their hearts and their minds, as hers was, and as their bodies changed to octopian forms, she cast glamours on them as well. Eventually, she dies, and her glamours die with her, leaving the two young girls suddenly exposed, and the Atlantian court disgusted and fearful. Triton, who has been in power for I expect a short time, quickly banishes both of his half sisters, much to the relief of the court. A decision I think he would regret, but could not change. I'd like to think that he later tried to reconcile with both but Morgana had gone off the deep end and possibly attacked him, and Ursula had sunk so far into her hatred of him that she could not be reached. Or there's an entire race of octopus people we just never see, which would be neat if they can all change color to blend in like real octopi. The sea could be filled with these invisible assassins. Did they really step on a sea urchin and get poisoned? Or was it an octopian assassination? Food for thought.

I have another theory for Vanessa. What if Vanessa is queen Athena’s sister, which would explain similarities. As the women in the video said Ursula was jealous of anyone prettier than her. And Ursula couldn’t get away with getting rid of the queen also because she was the only nice one that didn’t discriminate her so she got the queen’s sister Vanessa. ursula from the little mermaid probably fell in love with a human when she was younger, and went to land, but he rejected her because she had smarts and sass, and didn't hold her tongue; accidentally revealed merpeople details to her crush. he (her crush) used that to hunt merpeople, which lead to triton banishing his sister, which made her evil. facts to back it up. 1. why else would her counterpart "vanessa" look exactly like ariel's aunt or something? she could've took any form she wanted to seduce eric. she could've taken ariel's form, but she didn't. 2. usula knows human facts and what men like (from her song, "poor unfortunate souls). merpeople aren't accustomed to human behaviors like kissing and how men (in that time period) don't like women who can't hold their tongue. how else would she know, other than the fact that she's already been up there and tried to live what ariel wants? 3. there is a deleted scene where ursula and triton are confirmed siblings, and since they're the children of posidon, them being two different species aren't too far fetched. she also didn't want to kill triton, her brother, but she was happy to kill ariel. it was really personal for her because the human (eric) cared for ariel and her old love didn't. "so much for true love" sounded EXTREMELY personal.

She was on throne, until King's wife died, and after that he sends her to dangerous parts of ocean. My theory for sending her is that her mother ruined King's father's marige.

Maybe Ursula used to be human (Vanessa), but either wound up cursed to be an octopus woman & banished to the sea, or her parents passed away & she wound up near the sea where Triton's royal parents took pity on her & used magic to turn her into a mermaid. In any event, she was adopted by people in the palace, thus making she & Triton adopted siblings. Fueled by the anger of being cursed or mourning her former human life, she kept looking for ways to become human again, eventually resorting to attempting to steal the Trident. Triton found out about her plan & told his parents, who became angry & turned her into the octopus thing (if she wasn't already an octopus thing) & banished her. Once exiled, all hopes of becoming human again were dismissed & her new focus was on killing Triton & ruling the sea, for revenge. She planned on using Ariel to do so. As for Morgana & the mom, maybe after Ursula was exiled, she stumbled across another octowoman & young octogirl who had been cursed with the same thing, & learning that Ursula knew the ins & outs of the palace & about the magic trident, she decided to adopt Ursula as her 2nd daughter. Bc of the valuable information Ursula had, the mom held her in higher esteem than Morgana. This theory is backed by the fact that Ursula had no problem walking on land & acting human, whereas Ariel struggled immensely, for a prolonged period of time. Also, when the 3rd day comes to an end & Ursula takes Ariel back into the sea, she says something along the lines of, "Sorry sweetheart; it's not you I'm after. I have much bigger fish to fry," & then, on cue, Triton shows up immediately after. Idk. Just a fan theory 🤷‍♀️

I think she saved the Vanessa appeareance after making a deal with the woman it belonged to. The same way as she saved Ariel's voice. Probably in that magical shell.

i think Vanessa is what Ursula looked like when she was a mermaid cuz i think if her and kind trtion were siblings they both must have been mermaids so i think vanessa is what she looked like as a mermaid and thats might explain why she looks so much like ariel but she changed her appearance so no one will recognize her as the kings sister
