In this video, I'll explain the process of becoming a U.S. citizen, answering the questions you might have. To apply for citizenship, you first need to become a green card holder, which can be achieved through various ways like marriage, family sponsorship, employment, asylum, and more. Once you have your green card, the wait time to apply for citizenship depends on whether you obtained it through marriage or other means.
If you obtained your green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen, you can apply for citizenship after three years as a green card holder. For others, the wait time is five years. USCIS wants to ensure your commitment to living in the U.S., so maintaining your green card for the required duration is crucial.
The physical presence requirement mandates that you must be in the U.S. for a specific period, either 30 months (for five-year applicants) or 18 months (for three-year applicants). This requirement is strict, so make sure you meet it before applying.
Continuous residence is essential, as you cannot spend more than 180 days outside of the country per year. Exceptions apply, but be cautious to maintain your residency to avoid delays.
Having good moral character is a significant requirement. Certain criminal activities or non-criminal behaviors like not paying taxes or child support can affect your eligibility. USCIS may even revoke your green card if they discover issues during the naturalization process.
The step-by-step process for applying for citizenship includes submitting the N-400 form, attending a biometrics appointment, participating in a citizenship interview and exam, receiving a decision, and finally, taking the oath of allegiance.
You can apply 90 days before meeting the residency requirement, but ensure you've lived in the same state for at least 90 days before applying. USCIS will schedule your interview, which includes an English test, writing exam, and civics test.
After the interview, you'll receive a decision within 120 days. If denied, you can appeal. The final step is the oath of allegiance, making you a U.S. citizen.
Overall, the naturalization process typically takes between 12 to 24 months, depending on various factors. Keep in mind that becoming a U.S. citizen has both pros and cons, so consider your situation carefully before applying!

People got scared of the procees, but its not as bad as people thinks. when i was about to file, people were telling to get a lawyer. i thought about it for awhile and then said to myself, i had to criminal reccord and i have been in the us 12 years on a green card without leaving, i had nothing to worry about, so i did my research, i filed myself and the process was like 1,2,3. i went to the interview and the lady ask me three questions of the 100 which i answerd without a hitch and that was it, i was done, i got my letter for the swearing cermony, i went early, waited for awhile and then the rest is history. i've been in the us now for 20 years now with no bad experiences.

My question is my other daughter had name changed from the social security but not the driver license or immigration. All needed documents sent to the immigration including green cards for the update since last year just. Till today February 22, I not heard nothing or received anything about the name update. What should I do please? My child is now 19.

See the USCIS Policy Manual: Chapter 3 - Continuous Residence Part C. C. Breaks in Continuous Residence An applicant for naturalization has the burden of establishing that he or she has complied with the continuous residence requirement, if applicable. Generally, there are two ways outlined in the statute in which the continuity of residence can be broken: The applicant is absent from the United States for more than 6 months but less than 1 year; or The applicant is absent from the United States for 1 year or more.

I dont have any flight cancellation record because i didnt even try to book a flight as i had an infant with me therefore, i didnt want to compromise her health. Now my question is, does that lockdown period of 1 year outside break my continuous residency or does pandemic has an exception?

@michaelhorgan9525

One application per person but only for you and your wife as your child will become a citizen once you Naturalize. Once you naturalize you can apply for a Passport (via INA 320) for your child and/or fill out a N-600. N-600 once completed would grant them a Certificate of Citizenship. I do recommend getting a Passport first as those are cheaper and do not take as long as the N-600. It is up to you whether or not you want get them a certificate of citizenship.

You and your wife can naturalize together, just that you would need to apply individually. Children will automatically derive citizenship from the USC parents. Spouses do not derive citizenship so they will also need to fill out a N-600. There is a N-600 form for children under 18 that are living under your care but you can also get them their Passport or do both N-600 and Passport. Choice is yours.

@@tabithamaina3080 You would need to go to court and petition for name change then go to Social Security and provide them with the court order. I am sure you can provide that proof to USCIS.

I filed for my citizenship in October 2022 and attended my interview/Oat Ceremony at the end of January 2023 . The process was very quick and easy once you have everything in order.
