Transylvania may be cool but the Danube Delta is a true paradise

1. Dracula is a fictional character hence there can't be a "real" castle . Plus Bram Stocker never visited Transylvania so it's almost certain he wasn't inspired by a real castle in particular. 2. In he novel, the castle is described as being located in the "Borgo pass". That would be somewhere in the north of Transylvania (there is a castle/hotel for tourists there). 3. Vlad the Impaler was born in Transylvania and lived for many years there as well as in Budapest but he actually ruled over the southern province of Valahia, so historically he is associated more with castles in the south like Poenari, fortress of Targoviste etc 4. Bran castle is not mentioned in the novel nor has any connection with Vlad the Impaler (except him possibly being held there for a few days as prisoner) but everything about this castle is exactly how anyone would imagine Draculas's castle. Hence it's the perfect choice in order to promote Dracula and bring in tourists.

Vlad's real castle is called "Poenari". You can visit it. It's very remote, very creepy and way cooler than Bran castle. Look it up if you wish to see a true vampire lair.

And his real residence was in the capital and not either of those two castles

You are both right. Vlad III had a palace in Targoviste and then built a palace in Bucharest. He had a summer castle near Borgo Pass that is supposedly completely gone. He had a fortress built at Poinari where he would retreat to when the the wars wouldn5 being going his way, thats where he retreated to after the Turks overan Wallachia and left his wife there when he went to ask for help from the Hungarian King, but was arrested instead. His wife then famously committed suicide rather than be captured by the Turks. The othervstory is she killed herself because Vlad wanted to marry a young girl in Brasov, and she committed suicide rather than being brushed to the side.

I was at Bran and Peles castles two weeks ago. Bran is mostly marketing and hype. The deposed Romanian family is making a fortune off the castle. Peles Castlecis one of the most beutiful well furnished castles Ive ever seen with definetlybthe best and most extensive wood carvings Ive ever seen. .

Try visiting Viscri, probably the favorite village of Prince Charles in Romania. Dracula aka Vlad Tepes real castle is Poenari, but it's not as good looking as Bran Castle, but you'll need a vehicle to get to Poenari

His real residence was the capital of his country at the time were he impaled 20,000 ottomans. The castles were barely used.

You should visit Peles Castle, it is more beautiful than Bran Castle, way more beautiful, and it is no far from Brasov. The Peles Castle was built by king Carol I in the late 19th century and it is a marvel, a masterpiece, it will blow your mind. And you are so very nice people.

For clarifications or additions to what was said above, I recommend "Corpus draculianum" on youtube. The dramatic life of Vlad Tepes exposed in the chronicles of the time, his correspondence, the administrative documents from his period. All presented by professional historians, who, like Sherlock Holmes, try to bring Vlad to light, beyond legends and vicious propaganda.

If you visit Sinaia and the Peleș Castle.. try to also go to Bușteni (a town 7-10 minutes away from Sinaia with the train) where its another castle named Cantacuzino. The road till the castle is a bit less fensy.. but when you arrive at the castle.. things change cuz from there.. the beauty shows up :D In front of the castle there is also a place where you can eat / drink and admire a view with MOUNTAINS! (worth visiting too)

Marvellous; i really liked your 'horror film-esque' embellishments: quite well done - pity you couldn't have put this out as an 'Hallowe'en Episode' ({; D ...! It is lovely there, "Transylvania" (or, Transilvania, in Romanian) and from what i understand, Queen Marie of Romania did - for awhile, during the 1920s - actually reside at that castle, even if "Dracula"/Vlad T did not, and our 'Mr Stoker' apparently never made it there at all ({: \ ; as you said though, "...marketing" ({: > ...! Fun video/vlog!!

Vlad III of Wallachia (Vlad Tepes) was known as Dracula. Bram Stoker liked the sound of the name and the myth created by Saxon propaganda that Vlad was evil and dipped bread in his victims blood while watching them die being impaled from their anus through their bodies up to their shoulders trying to miss any vital organs so they would die slowly. Stoker originally called his novel The Undead and he either decided on the title Dracula at the last moment or the publisher had him change the title. There is no clear record of which happened, but all his drafts have a working title of The Undead and then crossed out and title Dracula written in his handwriting. History goes to the winners usually, and the Saxons got Vlad imprisoned for many years by the Hungarian king on false charges and the Ottoman Sultan had Vlad assassinated, so a lot of his bad press lived on. Literally bad press because one of the first uses of the printing press by the Saxons was mass production from wood cuttings on a printing press of Vlad III commiting attrocities. A not so well know interesting dynamic was the rivalry between Vlad and his younger brother Radu the Handsome, who was the young Ottoman Sultan's lover. The story is that the young Sultan tried to sexually assault 15 y.o. Radu, but Radu cut the young Sultans leg and hid in a tree until he left. Afterward they made up and were very close lovers for many years. The Sultan sent Radu to fight Vlad when Vlad turned on the Ottoman Empire and Radu spent more years ruling Wallachia for the Turks than Vlad did for the Hungary. Vlad is a national hero in Romania and Radu is a national traitor who is vilified in Romanian history. In reality, Radu achieved the same thing Vlad was trying to achieve of a semi independent Romania but instead of staking over 100,000 people, he made peace with the Saxon Boyars and slept with the Sultan.
