I especially liked your comment about lack of motivation very often being a wall we build for ourselves. That is so true!

Hi! I appreciate your words of wisdom! Of course, it’s so wonderful to watch your beautiful creations! It’s very relaxing and your voice is very soothing 😊 I took up sketching and watercolor about 1-2 years ago ( it’s been very sporadic because I have chronic health issues and I have very little space to create anything) Still, I’m proud of my work and I can see the progress I have made. I sketch and paint for me, my enjoyment, expression and release of emotion. Many of my sketches and watercolors don’t turn out like I want, but many do. A few are even better than expected and I get some much joy from that! The times that things don’t go well, I just remind myself that this is suppose to be fun and to relax in the beauty of my artistic style and enjoy the beautiful colors when I’m able to paint. When I think of things that way, I can enjoy myself and the experience more. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Fiona, you really outdid yourself with this one! This wise advice is worth pondering again and again. Thank you, thank you! (By the way, I can certainly identify with "too many palettes." I took everyone's advice on the perfect palette except my own.)

Really helpful, Fiona ... thank you! I've also realized I have the fear of messing up my bound sketchbook (I only work in small square sketchbooks), thinking that everything needs to be really good to be in it at all. That's very crippling to wanting to try new things and having them not turn out so well. But I've also realized I can take a photo of something finished in it that I don't like and print it out to insert into the sketchbook and then keep working and correcting the original, sometimes to the point of where it looks nothing like what it was, but I'll have both to compare. Who knows, there could be several versions inserted! It's all a learning experience.

Maryanne, you are not alone. I too have been depressed (isolated for 4 years now because of being immuno-compromised; pain for 3 months that has not yet relented with treatment; a friend died; and there's always the cultural and political stress of the times--I really must stop doom scrolling) for the last several months and my paper, paints and brushes just sit where I left them. I need to find joy and start living again. I hope you also find both joy and peace as well. May the New Year bring us all back to creativity.
