That is not true. There are studies with hunter-gather communities where, as long as you made it through puberty and survived child birth as a women, you have good chances of reaching 70 and up (70 being modal (=highest frequency) life expectancy for people older than 15, if I remember correctly). And 70 is not that far of from the US, where life expectancy (at birth - but with infant mortality < 1 %) is around 77.5 years in 2022 - with modern medicin. Hence the life expectancy at birth in hunter-gatherer communities and in the middle age etc. is/was largely low due to infant mortality and not because of grown-up people dying rather early.

Well that's the question isn't it. Are you healthy because you do those things or can you do them because you are healthy? That isn't a question for you by the way. Everyone knows an oldie who claims something they do let them live, such as smoking or drinking vodka, or not, but you need a lot of data to work out what's what. @@djdownie3data says little, the principle of adaptation in humans is well understood, if you do something, you get better at it and adapt. Every living tissue in our body is capable of adaptation. So people who move and keep working their flexibility, strength and cardio, keep those adaptations into old age, so they are healthy because of what they do, and NOT the other way around. If you cannot do something like bend over or sit on your knees, it is possible at any age to develop the ability, its training, same as anything else. Yes you are able to do those things (be flexible, strong, sharp, endurant) because you are already healthy, but you can actively improve your health, day to day by doing things, it will hurt to use muscles and joints that havent been used in years, or that have been "injured", but they only adapt to use. So its either shrivel up and rot or use your body and mind and get healthier. In summary, you are absolutely healthy because of what you do, we adapt, we also de-adapt. Case in point, people who do nothing all day, will end up senile, their body had no reason to maintain strength.

This luxury only started about a few thousand years ago, it may seem better to be so advanced in technology and stuff but if you think about was all of this really necessary, are we really evolving or just being a persistent bug on this piece of dirt that will kill itself much faster than it took to grow. This documentary reminded me of the the Netflix's documentary series entitled Blue Zones, how to live to 100. Great stuff there too.

Thank you for this lovely short documentary! Another possibility is that maybe this tribe is always having so clear oxygen and air, and also because of their daily hard work their lungs work much better than any other tribe. Which took my attention is that, it's not like in africa, weather is humid and the big leaf vegetation surrounding them can provide them with good air. And another thing which took my attention is that they have even slower aging than japanese people, wow that's amazing bc wasn't there a town in japan (ogimi) that average life span was around 100?

I am well over 40, but most people I met thought I was in my 20s. I can still run a mile in under 6 minutes, rest my heart rate under 50, and maximize my heart rate over 200. I was stopped by Belarusian and Ukrainian customer agents in the airports multiple times because I look 20 years younger than my biological age. My secrets: 180 push-ups, 240 sit-ups in the morning, and a 5-mile run at a pace of 6:50 per mile in the afternoon 3-4 times a week, plus a high-fruit and veggie diet and a low-protein diet.

Manual labor work is GREAT for human beings. I spent just 1 month in Ghana doing the same things my family does, the same work on the farm, etc, and have lost weight. I can feel my energy is different, mentally sharper. The western lifestyle is simply killing us.

Hey BBC World Service. I think there is a mistake in your closed captions. I think at 7:17 it should say 6,000, not 16,000.

not much meat.either, (even though they mention it) because they don't have fridges to store it for long, so when they do eat meat, its a short feast that only lasts a couple days as the climate it spoils meat too fast.. We visited that area 7 years ago (different tribes but all have the same ancestry) With smaller animals they add the meat for just flavour to some soups to get a few days more, You sometimes saw meat in dishes but it was very thin slivers, so its a very low consumption of it. We noticed they mostly ate vegetables, root vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, berries, seeded shoots, fruits, whole grains (if any), herbs, spices etc,

They are moving so much they use the carbohydrates they eat, their arteries are not calcified because they move so much. Movements along with nutrients helps the calcium get to the right places in the body. They don't get any cardiovascular disease because they move and eat well. Movement and the usage of the carbs they eat prevent them from getting diabetes. Also they don't constantly snacking foods. They have to collect and prepare the food before they eat so they have a fasting window. Making the gutmicrobiom thrive and the gut rest and insulin restore. Their mental health is at top because they move around, do meaningful things and have a beautiful community.

I wonder why people wants to live long. Others afraid of dying and very seldom mentioned their purpose if they had done. I have children finish their schooling of which I believe my only obligation. I hate enjoying drinking, smoking with friends or working in my garage shop to pass the time, if only we can say easily goodbye and be gone, I would rather have my space used by others. I am 57 years old, no medication and maintenance, joints pain many, can still lift and transfer my 150 pounds anvil when arranging things. Nobody asked if we want to exist or not, now we experience life and sustain the everyday challenge. In this world I won't be happy alone and seeing others in miserable lives. This life will go on, it is embedded in our system to survive and improve to adopt to our harsh environment. As human there's so much to choose how and what to be happy. Our culture teaches us that only death... "wait for it will surely arrive."

The source of health is the culture. Memetics, the things that we believe and say to ourselves and others Determines the environments and zip codes that we live in (epigenetics) which influences the biological expression of our DNA (genetics).

Imagine that concept. We are obsessed with the number of how old we are, which we think defines us and tells us how long we still have, they don’t bother with it.
