Lets get a few things straight: - The Raspberry Pi was released in 2011 in the UK (2012 in the USA and worldwide). The first ones in the USA being the Model B and Model A, will both say "raspberry Pi (c) 2011.12 (datecode for Dec. 2011). - The Kickstarter for The CHiP came out in May 2015. - The Raspberry Pi Zero was released in Nov. 2015; the Models B+ and A+ were released in 2014. If you got both the R-Pi and the CHiP at the same time it had to happen in end of 2015 or mid 2016, as the CHiP was having major issues with supplies and shipping. I too donated to kickstarter as well and forgot about it until strangely enough around Halloween 2015 I received a small box with the CHiP inside. At about the same time (a few weeks later) I got the R-Pi 0 and ordered a couple more CHiPs and "Hats" for them to get HDMI and VGA Video. I would not get this next CHiP order until the following summer. My friend Adam (RIP-3/2018) then gave me a couple more "Hats", a Pocket CHiP and another CHiP so we can program and do various projects together that summer I got the other CHiPs I had ordered. So now I have about 5 CHiPs. The CHiP and early R-Pi uses the similar A7 ARM CPU but with different I/O elements. But the R-Pi runs the A7 on the earlier systems at 700MHz (The R-Pi 0 was at 900MHz), while the CHiP's R8 CPU was at 500MHz. Wikipedia says it is at 1GHz but I do not trust that entry; I remember it being at 500MHz but software overclocked at 1GHz. Perhaps they were talking about Maximum speed with overclocking? Either way, I remember some head-to-head speed test between the two: The CHiP vs The R-Pi Zero, the R-Pi Zero won. I will say that the CHiP's Linux is a poor one as it is not taking advantage of the CPU like Raspbian (now R-PI OS) does with the Raspberry PI. BTW - not that it mattered, I bought my first R-Pi when it came out back in 2012 and keeping buying each new model as they come out. But I find the older ones to be better as back then it was a science and an art to get things done on them.

I recall the CHIP had some strange power management. By default it will only draw 700mA or so from the USB port. If you don't have a battery connected (or 5v on the header) it will shutdown if it exceeds the limit. Maybe that's relevant. They might have done a default underclock to prevent shutdowns. I don't really remember.

I actually own one of the Pocket C.H.I.P. computers. It's a full handheld thing. They were really cool and WAY cheaper then the Raspberry PI. I paid I think $40 for the whole setup, that was a battery, a screen with a built in keyboard, and a shell for that price. They sadly died off, but I'm still glad to have this one strange chunk of history. Still works, but sadly I can't update the O.S. anymore, so it's not something I want to mess with much anymore.

Love the Beagle Bros T-shirt. Great software... good times. RE: the 2SDD floppies, I have a whole drawer full of those for my A2000. Must go through and check them on of these days... "df -h" will get you the disk usage of all mounted volumes, in human-readable format (hence the -h) I use that mode the most. and "uname -a" should get you the Linux version running. I never saw those Kickstarter boards but had a few other Linux SBC's (Single Board Computers), for some embedded projects prior to the RPi's debut. And the other major SBC of the same format at the time was the Beaglebone White, which became the Beaglebone Black or BBB. They are still popular and have several other flavours now, based on the TI Sitarra SoC. Congrats on getting the 100K plaque! Cheers,

I am an ex-Montrealer as well, having been there from the age of 3 to the age of 36. To get to La Ronde in Montreal, you took the Yellow, Metro Line 4. In Montreal, it was not the subway, it was the Metro. To the generous gentleman from Plattsburg, the wildlife park that you went to was called Parc Safari Africanne, and I think it was in the Eastern Townships; I seem to recall Hemmingford, QC, but I could be wrong on that. The Baboons were famous for breaking off windshield wipers and antennas, as well as pooping on cars. There were a lot of Montreal residents that used to go to Plattsburg. They had a very nice beach there, which Montrealers flocked to during the summer. On the way back, of course, there was an obligatory stop at the mall in Plattsburg, as well as picking up a load of gas before heading back to Montreal. I did that with my mom and dad as well as most other kids did with their parents in my neighbourhood. I also had a field trip to go to the Plattsburg Air Force Base. We toured the base there with my Air Cadet squadron, they drove us around the flight line on the bus, where we got to see B-52s, FB-111s and KC-135s. We were actually allowed to crawl inside the KC-135 tanker, and we got to sit in an FB-111, but I only got to sit on the right side,Weapons Officer seat, not the left side seat that the pilot sat in.

Congratulations once again on the silver play button! As far as the livestreaming goes, I'd recommend against doing it on your main channel, and keeping it to your second channel. I've seen a lot of KZbinrs saying it hurt the views on their regular videos when they started doing livestreams on their main channel. Whether that's down to the algorithm deciding to move the channel to a different category and stops showing it to regular subscribers, or if some subscribers don't like seeing the notifications for the livestreams and reflexively turn off notifications, I'm not sure.

BTW, if anyone's interested in floppy disks, I made the FluxEngine. It's a cheap, open source, simple DIY USB floppy drive interface which is capable of (theoretically) reading or writing all kinds of different floppy disk formats using standard PC hardware --- it can, for example, write Mac 800kB or Amiga disks, which is great for bootstrapping systems. One of the things it'll do is let you analyse the drive response to see what range of flux pulse spacing they can reproduce; not all drives are capable of reproducing the 8us pulse spacing required for a DD format when on a HD disk. There are graphs! Unfortunately I can't link to them because otherwise KZbin kills my comment, but search for 'fluxengine drive response'.

I find that to achieve the best results with the RGBtoHDMI for PC (fullscreen without any deformation and no interpolation), considering that most DOS games were designed with a non-square pixel ratio (5:6), you need to use a 1600x1200 monitor (or 1920x1200 if you're OK with vertical black bars) and set a special 5:6 x 320x200 profile for CGA in integer scaling. For EGA, you must switch to another profile and the softer interpolated scaling to remain with no deformation (2.5/6 x 640x200 = 1600x1200) which is still very good quality (though not as sharp). Or you can go with the Standard PC default profile: 2:5 (slightly deformed) integer scaling, in which case a 1280x1024 monitor might be better to fill as much screen as possible. There's a post on Vogons forum that explains this in more details.

The RPi *2* came out several months before the CHIP Kickstarter ended (Feb 2015 vs May 2015, RPi was Feb 2012). The main feature of the CHIP was the much lower price ($9), but... the even cheaper ($5) RPi Zero came out in Nov 2015 and was likely the final nail in the coffin. NTC opened up for post-Kickstarter pre-order in Dec 2015 but I think the writing was on the wall for everyone to see even if the original RPi Zero didn't have Wifi, the RPi Zero-W only came out in Feb 2017. The Wikipedia page claims many customers still hadn't received their pre-orders by the time NTC entered insolvency in March 2018.

We had one at work, a PS/2 55sx, and although it recognized low capacity formated disks, we could format the same as high density disks without problems. You should try to get one of those. I have seen many channels that started as "fun" but quickly turned to be a commercial thing, selling merchandise, making certain videos available to patreons only, taking sponsors and specifically making BS videos just to promote sponsor items. This, IMHO, kills the fun instantly. I have stopped following quite many channels because of this, and there are some others I am about to give up on. Your channel is exactly how KZbin has to be, bunch of like minded people watching and learning about stuff they love, seeing very hard to come by items etc. I wouldn't change a thing here. Thanks!

I've got boxes of thousands of floppy disks, including a ton of sealed, NOS (presumably from around 2005) I picked up from a failed tech company. It's very clear that any disks manufactured in the 90's and earlier are very reliable, and anything from the 2000's is garbage. Over 99% of my Amiga disks test perfect, but I'd say about 20% of the NOS disks are bad right out of the boxes. Quality control dropped off sharply as floppy disks were phased out, I guess. The very first disk I ever bought, around 1986, is a green disk I used as my primary work disk, and I used the heck out of it for everything back in the day. It still works great. Despite their reputation, disks are extremely reliable if they are stored correctly.

would that RGB2HDMI work with low-res VGA? I want something to help me capture 320x200 and 640x400 games.

@Adrian I grew in Plattsburgh too, we're around the same age, so we probably nearly crossed paths when I visited Montreal. Plattsburgh did have a TV station, but it was a VHF station, WPTZ channel 5. It may have had a UHF repeater for outlying areas. I used to go to Montreal for concerts in the early 80's, but we also went to the zoo with the wild monkeys and another place further north, Granby Zoo. I also recall going to some futuristic park on the island, Expo67. Had some fun times there in Montreal. Also lived in Portland for a few years in the late 90's. Small world.

I was a Kickstarter backer for the CHIP and I'm pretty sure the Raspberry Pi was already out when the CHIP was announced. The attractive thing about the CHIP is that it was $9 when the RPi was $35. It was the Raspberry Pi Zero that came out afterwards and killed off CHIP.

I was fortunate to find a couple of boxes of unused Sony 3.5" DD disks for my IBM PS/2 Model 25 at a local thrift store last year. One box was open and two disks were missing but all were unformatted and tested good.

Congratulation to 100.000 subscribers. Maybe to put a black label on the hole of a 1.44 Disc should do the trick to pretend that rhe disc is a 720 Disc. Just a consideration. Keep up the good work. Stay safe. Stay healthy. The human malware is around.

You can actually buy brand new SIMM sockets (30 and 72pin) from RS Components. Just ordered some for whatever comes. They also have metal clamps and not the cheap plastic ones that easily break off.

Holy crap I had no idea that the RGB2HDMI existed. I've looked at some chips that can convert digital RGB to HDMI for a couple projects, but never bothered with them because I'd have to design and build my own PCB. This thing looks like it does everything I want and more!

I once tried to reflow a Rage FURY MAXX by heating it up in an oven for 5 minutes at 100C, every single SMD component on it came loose. I'm not saying this will happen for sure, but if you want to desolder something, just hang it upside down in an oven and heat it to around 100C and leave it there for an hour or so with a baking paper underneath. I would think a lot of things will come loose by themselves. The board will obviously not work anymore, and not all ICs may like 100C temperature but for things like SIMM sockets and whot not, why not? Try it Adrian. For science.

@adrian: dont throw disks that dont format on PC into bin, they usually work 100% on AMIGA... been doing it for years, try it please... take few from the trash and format in on Amiga, 99% of the time it will work and wont stop working .. i dont know what is the reason, i guess different format, but since my friends who had PC's usually tossed 10-20 diska a month into bin i always got free disk for amiga which worked perfectly forveer (some still do)

Oh man, C.H.i.P. Boards, dang I miss them, I’ve got a couple of them, one with a hdmi adapter on it, and a few Alpha chips and of course my pocket chip and my v.74 pocket chip. Too bad the software installer was online and when the company went belly up that was lost. And the offline solution using Linux is beyond my skill.

Desoldering SIMM sockets -- start with a good quality flux like amtech 559 or 213, apply the flux, apply low-melt solder to each joint, then use a hot-air rework station to heat the board and flow off the socket. Not for the faint of heart, especially if there are small SMD components or other bits of plastic nearby. Practice on broken bits first. :-)

I'll bet someone else has already mentioned it, but I occasionally work on amateur radio gear, and swear by ChipQuick desoldering alloy. There are a number of competing products out now which are all variations on an old Bismuth / Cadmium / Lead alloy called "Woods' Metal," but I'm fairly certain that ChipQuick was the first lower toxicity version to be available for the hobbiest market. Just a little bit goes a long way, so even the small "single use" kit lasts for several projects. The trick is to reflow it with the existing solder and then add a little bit of 60/40 to increase the thermal mass of the solder while the bismuth reduces the alloy's melting point. This works for both PTH and SMT style boards regardless of the number of layers, and virtually eliminates the chance of lifting pads. I am not affiliated with them, I just love the product. Their website is www.chipquik.com/store/index.php?cPath=200 and they have both a leaded version for North Americans and real hobbiests, as well as lead-free for Europeans and manufacturers who have to deal with crap RoHS solder.

Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers! I'm pretty sure you're just having fun playing with electronics and the rest is just a bonus! ;) On the topic of de-soldering those sockets; I have had success with using my hot air gun on the board to warm it up and then being able to solder suck/wick each pin. Then I use my soldering iron and an x-acto blade, I release each of the remaining stuck pins. Please note that the hot air is blowing on the bottom of the board, near the sockets, at about 100-150C, the whole time I am working, and that I use plumbers felt and Kapton tape to manage heat. It is tedious but effective.

Here is a Wikipedia page on CHIP. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHIP_(computer) It is not in a SOC "System On a Chip" package is in a SiP "System in Package" chip. and it was $9.00 US when it was released. Adrian, maybe you could make a project out of one of those and make a video about it? It would be a shame to let those sit on a shelf doing nothing. After all a computer strives to "Do something"

Congrats Adrian for 100K! You're closer to 200K now that I'm writing this comment, but mail call videos are always fun to watch because it is like Christmas every time, you never know what you are going to get. That's why I like to watch even all of the older content from history. Can't say I've even heard of these boards before, but I've seen many similar ones and even have some kicking around in my tool cabinet.
