@@luna8327 Anne was considered as a witch who bewitched Henry and made him divorce KoA and break with Vatican and Mary burned protestants in England, where under her brother's reign the reformation went further and protestants gained in numbers. During her 5 year reign she almost 300 people burned and her protestant opponents gave her the nickname "Bloody Mary".

People hated Mary because of the rumors given by the Protestants Yes she killed 270 people but his fathers killed more than 2000 and no one called him Bloody Henry. She is a misunderstood character. I don’t think she was a bad queen.

I think that is the one thing everyone will agree on Henry was a terrible dad. The psychological trauma that both those girls suffered is pretty obvious. Mary never trusted anyone around her and became suspicious and vindictive. Not to mention her health suffered because of it. Elizabeth vowed never to get married because of her father and the examples he set. With examples like that it would be enough to put anyone off.
@justrandomthings112

Yes, their father abandoned them and restored her to the line of succession and took away their titles and Elizabeth was titled a bastard by her father. Mary father also kept Mary away from her family and didn't let her to see her mother. But her father was only one of the reasons why Queen Elizabeth didn't marry. Also because she witnessed her stepmothers die from giving birth and Thomas Seymour sexually assaulted her.

Alexis Vane I agree but your missing a few key details. Mary killed 200 people in her 5 year reign while continuously imprisoning her sister constantly while Elizabeth made England the richest monarchy(her reign is still the peak of England’s wealth) and inspired many artists and painters such as Shakespeare in her 46 year reign. Both used the same methods, but one had less luck than the other.

@@DramaQueenBree Are you talking about total killed or on an annual basis? Mary ruled for 4 years while Elizabeth for 44 years and Henry for 36 years. Quite a difference. However, had Mary produced an heir, the world would have been different because that heir, especially if male would have been King of both England and Spain, so no need for the warfare between them.
@DramaQueenBree
@DramaQueenBree 4 жыл бұрын
Jane Felix I am talking about total people killed clearly. Henry VIII and Elizabeth each killed more people during each of their reigns that Mary did during hers. And yes I am aware had Mary had a child with Philip that the number of people killed would have risen because Elizabeth never would have inherited the throne and England would have become a catholic nation once more.

They're not so different. They loved England equally. They battled with equal courage to keep their Beloved safe. Just because they celebrated their love of God differently, this isn't as large a difference, especially when the CofE was still new. 2 sides of the same coin to me. Mary quite possibly wouldn't have married that loser if she felt secure in England remaining a Catholic nation when her time of trial and strife was over. She needed an heir, which was, unfortunately, wasn't God's will. If Henry had married her off many years sooner, she would've had a far better chance of motherhood.

@NicolaWriter You're right, she absolutely paved the way for Elizabeth. I read in Mary Tudor, Princess Bastard Queen that it's likely she wasn't aware of how bad the burnings had gotten and her role in them not as big as stereotype would make people believe. Her rule interests me far more than Elizabeths because, like you said, E's is so overly raved about. It's sadly so easy for people to accept stereotypes that they miss out on the real complexities of Mary, she was one fascinating figure.

Elizabeth was a good queen, but Mary was a good person. She is probably the strongest woman I've ever heard about. Mary suffered so much, but didn't became cruel or evel. She was a kind person, devoted to church and mother. Mary wasn't as bad as she's depicted by protestants. For me she is some kind of hero. She managed to become England's first queen, though it was practically impossible for her. Mary was a true daughter of queen Catherine. I really admire her!

@@Deborahtunes You have to consider Elizabeth reigned for far more time than Mary. 4000 people in forty years of reign is different from 300 in about two or three years of reign. And Elizabeth didn't execute Mary Stuart out of jealousy, forgive me, but that's so stupid and ignorant of you to say. Mary was most likely plotting to overthrow her, if not, she was incriminated, since there was some evidence found in some letters. Mary Tudor did the same with Jane Grey, who wasn't even a grown woman making her own choices, like Mary Stuart, but a young girl used as a pawn by her family and other protestants.

@ligreekguy I don't apologize for Elizabeth. she did what she had to do as the reigning queen of a country going through all the turbulence it had. she was a very shrewd and capable person and shown it multiple times and like all wise people, she realized that her view on matters might not suffice and surrounded herself with a small group of advisers. oh they might have each had an agenda, but at the end of the day she was the queen who decided what course to do. make no mistake about that.

Initially, she did, until the period of persecutions. The Wyatt Rebellion of 1554 proved to be a turning point, as she felt betrayed after having showed such leniency toward those who sought to prevent her from ruling. Mind you, I am hardly making any excuses for the persecutions that took place during her reign. But we also have to remember that these were absolute monarchs, and the deaths that occurred under Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were far greater in number and often in brutality.

I agree with some of the things you said, except for the "absolute monarchs". They still didn't have all the power. The first absolute monarch in European Modern Age was Louis XIV of France. Jane died of an infection after the birth of Edward. Puerperal fever, it's called. Also, Edward wasn't cut from the womb, like most stories say. I do, however, think that Henry as well as condemned Katherine of Aragon to death when he ripped his love from her. They were so devout in their love, too, in the early years. I don't like how she's always portrayed as his senior by like twenty years though, when it was only five. /end ramble xD

@ligreekguy Elizabeth had Mary queen of the scots...she was a bigger threat to Elizabeth than Jane would have ever been to Mary. she was in direct line of power and the people of England never rejected her. and yet she was kept alive for 19 years, and then only when conclusive proof was shown that she was directly involved in these plots. Jane was beheaded because she was used as a figurehead not because she did anything.

This still does not take away from the over 4,000 Catholics (over half of them innocent Irish peasants, another 200 of them being Benedictine and Carthusian monks who were slowly disemboweled, a death far slower and more painful than burning at the stake) under Elizabeth I. Never have I condoned the actions of Mary I (under whom 300 died), but I also refuse to tolerate the glorification of Elizabeth.

I agree... All of these "documentaries" talk about the 280 people Mary killed. But none of them mention the 4,000 people Elizabeth had murdered... Not to mention her own cousin, Queen Mary of Scotland she had beheaded, because of her own jealousies'. They paint Elizabeth as a saint, and Mary as a she-devil. It's how things were in that time. But to be fair, Elizabeth was far worse a murderer & thief, then her sister Mary...

She kind of deserved being yelled at, at the very least. Elizabeth was pretty snide and ungrateful towards Mary. I respect your opinions on Elizabeth, since I like her too and am acquainted with you -- but I do see how Elizabeth wasn't exactly the most loyal of sisters. Mary was willing to forgive and forget, yet Elizabeth kept rubbing salt in Mary's wounds even if she didn't directly oppose her half-sister.

@NicolaWriter Mary was totally bad ass, especially how she raised her own army to win her throne! I loved reading about that. Very, very good point too, if she was so tyrannical and evil she would have executed Elizabeth in a snap. She wasn't fond of Elizabeth by any means, she was fiercely suspicious of her after the Wyatt Rebellion, but after some guidance she not only released her from house arrest, but invited her back to court. Much more more merciful than E was to Mary Queen of Scots.

Joanne did capture Mary's bitterness and the scene where she dies while in "childbirth" is superbly done. Joanne was about 43 when she played that part, which was actually older than Mary was when she became queen (38 or so) Everyone in Elizabeth R looks exactly like their character- its actually kind of scary. Protestants see communion as sacred too, but to Elizabeth, being a Queens only heir so far and knowing that all the people involved in that Queen's personal counsel see you as the ruining of all they worked hard to establish, it's easy to assume that their poisoning you would be an easy solution to securing their plans for the kingdom.

@ligreekguy no problem with good debate ^^ about her sibling's relationship, I'm fully aware that it was not her fault. it was not the children's fault either though. she had a 17 year difference with the elder of the two and was raised in a different manner/religion. take also into account that they were all step siblings and the relationships their mothers had (+ that she was the only one big enough to remember..) and you see how their relationship was bound to be strained. to be fair with their father king Henry VIII, I think the estimated 54,000 to 72,000 people executed is an exaggeration. The number was too much for the people to tolerate. If the figure is reliable, it probably included those people who have died in warfare during Henry's reign but definitely not by executions alone.
