And if we don't do some serious rearranging of our lives, culture, and ways of living within the next decade or less... we either will definitely need to or things will deteriorate so badly that nothing we know from the past, or from this era will save us or anything else. The climate will change to the point that nothing we do will slow it down let alone stop it, and much of what we know and has evolved for millennia will die right along with us. The saddest thing about this is how there are many living creatures, including humans in cultures throughout the world that had nothing to do with this mess we've created over the past century or so and thus they will suffer miserably long before we do, as that is the way of it has always been. The poor and disadvantaged always suffer first, longest, and hardest and longest as a result of the whims and selfishness of the wealth holders of a society, and in this case it will be occurring on world wide scale. As an American I am ashamed to say that despite our being roughly only 3% of the world's population, we are responsible for the vast majority of its pollution, both on land, in the sea, and the air. To date, 99% of our food in the States has just been reported by Consumer Reports is now poisoned irreversibly with micro plastics and polymers along with our entire food chain and no amount of money can reverse it. This, all for the sake of increasing corporate profit through massive deregulation's that began in the barely 1990s. In fact it was within less than a year afterwards that the first major food recalls due to poor practices began, and have continued ever since. For those born at that time and afterwards, they may never know what it was like to rarely have food recalls of the magnitude and frequency that we have had in America prior to that. Now it is normalized for those generations as they have no perspective of a different era in the way many things have changes for the worse since the 1980s. So, while we continue to vote for those who manipulate us into believing they serve the average American's best interest, their voting records, bills and regulations sponsored all demonstrate who they really serve, which are and have been for decades, the massive multinational corporations and their super wealthy owners and controllers. What is shocking is how easy it is to attain that information by going to Congress.gov, it is all there. But instead we sit before our wide screen tvs anesthetizing ourselves into oblivion either waiting and hoping for someone else to come along and solve our problems or disregard them altogether in pathological denial. Because after all, it is far easier to deny the existence of such things as climate change and ecological destruction, then admit that we would have to now reduce our lifestyles to such an extent. For that kind of alteration to the modern American lifestyle is inconceivable to the vast majority of Americans. So, such things as ecological concern is ridiculed, marginalized, and even turned into perjoratives to convince us that they're not real concerns at all, at least not by anyone with a normal frame of thinking. And we've been falling for that ruse forever. We've procrastinated, argued, frittered away our time for so long that we've essentially passed through every window of opportunity left to prevent what is now about to become the inevitable. As scientist's across the world refer to it, this may very well be our specie's Great Filter of which we are showing no sign of being able to resolve and thus pass through towards survival and further evolution. And so that means we will enter a massive period of die off, if not total extinction along with many if not most other species. For just like any bacteria that over populates its environment, consumes all its resources, and defecates in it petri dish to capacity, it then dies. Now... back to my tea. :)

13:59 this is just insane to me like, I can go to my pantry right now and have each of those spices in a ready-to-use little container, or at the very least go to the grocery store and buy said spices altogether for less than an hours worth of pay based on my personal hourly income. This is one of my favorite things about history, is that it shows how far we’ve come as a civilization just to have cinnamon ready to go on a shelf in my pantry. In fact, if I’m feeling fancy, I can buy the cinnamon bark stick things 😅 and grind the cinnamon myself. I just love those little moments where you can compare life today verses life back then

If you've never tried freshly grating your nutmeg, I highly recommend it. It's SO much better than the pre-ground stuff you buy at the grocery store. It almost tastes like a different spice than the pre-ground stuff.

Your history....not mine! But I have to say that changing the religious beliefs just to be able to divorce queen Katherine and keep marrying and burying until he finally gets his male heir...Jane Seymour died from the after birth infection ECT... Sorry, but his son passed away at a very young age and his girls ended up ruling Mary "Bloody Mary" and well I would have been safe with her! As I'm a Catholic and went to Catholic school!!! I love my history from all over the world but being from the United States of America and I grew up with a lot of European cultures and stories about "the old country"😊❤🎉

I love everything that Ruth Goodman does….She’s not a bit timid or afraid or squeamish to “get her hands dirty” handling whatever she needs to - which, BTW, would turn my stomach. God love her!!! Her enthusiasm for history is so genuine and she is the hardest working “teacher” that desires nothing more than to present history in the most authentic way as possible. I consider myself one of her many “students,” and I live in NC. She is absolutely incredibly AWESOME!! Let me quickly add the answer to the question often asked “If you were stranded …on an island, on a mountain, in a secluded cabin in Alaska - almost anywhere really - (LMBO), who would you want to be stranded with?” Answer (without hesitation): Ruth Goodman, especially since I want to survive - LMBO!! Thank you Ruth, Peter and everyone who works so hard to bring us these series. Blessings from the USA! 🇺🇸❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️🇺🇸

Humans should not even be eating animals. We are not physiologically made to eat them. To do so is therefore, sheer cruelty. Farmers should only grow plants which is what we are designed to eat. So much more nutrition in plants than in corpses.

In polish tradition we have the Wigiłia, 13 meatless, very specific dishes on December 24..starting when the first star appears in the sky..then we pass around the opłatki, like a communion like wafer with different scenes imprinted on them..each person gets there own and takes a piece of everyone else's..starts with the father or eldest patriarch, all the way down to the youngest girl..there is even one for the animals..there is hay on the table with a white table cloth over it..a chair and empty plates is always left out for either Christ should He decide to come, or a guest or beggar, if one happens to show up..then presents and some drinking..then all go to Pasterka, Christmas Midnight Mass..then next day food, presents, visiting family..but the big deal is Christmas Eve Wigiłia.. Then Jan 6,. 3 Kings Day, there is a chalk blessing above the entry door of the family home writing "20+K+M+B+24" for 2024 for example, written with blessed chalk..then blessing of throats on Saint Blaise Day Feb 1, and Candlesmas, the next day we take candles to Church to get blessed, and those candles are lit during storms to protect from lightning. Candlemas officially ends the Christmas Season..yes, there's the Christmas Octave, and the 12 days, but the Season officially lasts to and ends on February 2..there's many other things we do, but that's some it. God bless Mary protect +++

In Ireland we celebrate St Stephen's day, Dec 26th when "the wren boys" go house to house dressed as beggers singing and playing music for coins. We also celebrate "little Christmas " when all the women go drinking and the men clean up after Christmas and take down the decorations, on the 6th of Jan.

The 25th of December still is the first day of the 12 days of Christmas. The feast days of the saints are still kept. Several things the narrator said "was" for still Is.

Hi Nicole Good afternoon. I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. If you don’t mind can we be friends? Thanks God bless you….😂

I so love this, it is so great to see how this was done, loved the woman who taught us all how to cook for the 12 days of the holidays.😊

When did the women/cooks get their break? It must have been backbreaking work to get through all 12 days of creating feasts.

In The Royal Canadian Regiment we had deep British traditions. On our birthday the youngest member of your Battalion became the Commander the real CO was arrested and thrown in jail. All to much hilarity and irreverent fun. We totally desecrated our uniforms.great memories Thanks

I kept a subsistence farm in S. Ohio. I was not yet 30, but the only one with any experience, and much of that was from books. I will never forget the look on my husband's face, when I'd cut around the pig's head, seized it by the ears, and twisted it off with that distinctive sound! Luckily, our pig's head went to a Mennonite Sister for souse meat. I didn't even have to brush his teeth!
