That platform ,was the coaling stage for the CEGB engines that worked the power station. I see the pit roads have been filled in, it's been 20 years nearly since I was last there. Just been looking at some pix I took last year around there on a nostalgic trip back to where my missus is from , and found some of Mickelhurst station. The loop , and the old twin-bore tunnels at Diggle were being seriously considered for re-opening when Ed Burkhardt was in charge at EWS , about the time I mover to the company. They were prepared to put some good money up for it , but it came to nowt , like a lot things.Used to ride my trail/enduro bike around the goods yard and trackbed in the arly 2000's, even into the goods shed ! Right where you filmed it last time. The whole place is dripping with atmosphere and interest. Another blockbuster, Sir.

Martin - the remains of the (lighter-coloured brick) buildings, where you guys gained access to an upper-floor (via the 'makeshift' ladder) are those of an engine-shed, used for the stabling and (light-)maintenance of the plant's little diesel shunter loco(s). I seem to recall it was a single-road depot/shed only. I'd kinda "UrbEx'ed" it back in the 70s, as a zit-faced kid, together with friends from Ashton Grammar School. Back then, there was really hardly any forestation like there is today - and there was a rickety metal staircase leading up to the top-level of the "motive-power depot"/loco-shed ...... which I think only some of us scaled. There was a large amount of railway infrastructure still left in-situ back then: a multitude of tracks still there (in about '75 - '77'ish) and we were obsessed with throwing the hand-operated points nearby, in the general yard area as well as with collecting the huge screws which fixed the CHAIRS (for the rails) to the SLEEPERS ....... we likened those screws to "Gerry stick-grenades."

Hi Martin, the writing in the concrete above the second tunnel entrance reads F.C Construction Derby. The F.C bit is short for ferro concrete. F.C Construction was a company in Derby who specialised in manufacturing precast concrete sections for civil engineering projects like the tunnel you explored. It's been a few years since I was in that area of Derby but I think that F.C are still going. I lived about about a mile form the F.C plant back in the seventies, which was situated on Alfreton road on the north side of the city, my mum would occasionally work there in the accounts office when they were busy. Trivia I know but I couldn't resist the share. I don't know if your aware of the North Wales slate mines, there's dozens of them, most of them easy to explore. They're a big interest of mine and they're not too far from you for a long weekend explorathon. I'd love to see you try some of those, some of them would blow your mind, take a look. I would be more than willing to point you in the right direction if you want. Love your videos, keep it up and keep safe.

This video is the proof that a sequel can be better as the first video. Really beautiful! You're lucky there are such remains out there. Abandon this kind of buildings, tunnels etc. and let them just be and let nature take over is completely unthinkable in The Netherlands. There might be a few unused tracks beside a live main line but everything else will be demolished very quickly after abandoning (mostly within 5-10 years everything is just gone and redeveloped).

Canadian viewer here and have to say your uploads are amazing. Definitely one of the better 'exploration' channels on KZbin. Speaking of which its also crazy how many different channels there are exploring the UK/Lonron. And even crazier how many different old/ancient, lost, forgotten, disused, abandoned underground tunnels, bunkers, structures, places there are in the UK/London. Theres so much underground/buried man-made construction there thats been forgotten it points out an obvious disconnect in the societal memory from one time period to another. Especially the 'Arks' or underground 'city' under Manchester. These were not small efforts so it amazes me not only that they exist but that most have no clue of their existence. Again great channel! I love history and specifically looking into what exactly was happening in the last 500+ years.

Excellent, Martin. Great video. One of the stills you included showed that back in the day there seemed to be two covered conveyors, an upper one and a lower one, the latter presumably being the one that carried the coal from the hopper you found and which was partly in the tunnel that you had problems with! I would guess, - and this is purely a guess, - that the lower one was the original one but the tunnel section had the same problem that you found, - water ingress - particularly during rainy spells. Possibly for this reason they built the one at the higher level, which extended above and across the railway lines to, presumably, some kind of coal elevator by the sidings on the East side of the railway. Incidentally, the lower of the trackside structures that you found, that you thought was a bit like a station platform, looks to me a bit like a coal stage from which loco tenders could be replenished. The coal for the power station probably came from Yorkshire and if, in the days of steam, a whole train-load was delivered, the loco may have needed extra coal before its return journey with empties over (and through) the Pennines. Keep 'em coming!
@MartinZero4 жыл бұрын

23:58 - the bolts in the wall on the upper left side more than likely once held insulators that wires for power were strung on for lighting and or equipment below. The insulators are long gone, but the original iron stanchion bolts which were set into the concrete remain. Well Done Martin finally getting to other end of the tunnel that once stopped you.

Liking the Magazine 'A Song From Under The Floorboards' intro. One of my favourite songs, and that first verse (apart from the 'Ill' bit) is me, in a nutshell. My irritability does indeed keep me alive and kicking. Presumably, the coal went from the hopper on to the low-level conveyor, through that shite filled tunnel, and then across the river, and into the powerstation. There's a big cutout in the floor under the hopper, where the conveyor gubbins would have been. I bet it was some poor sod's job to be in that room all the time, to ensure the hopper didn't get blocked, and the conveyor was working properly - it must have been hellishly dirty and noisy. Brilliant video, as always. Thank you, Martin. Your videos mean to me - Sunday. Sorted!

@@jeanybeany7951 - What is Shazam? (other than a DC Comics character). Sorry, Magazine are one of my all-time favourite bands. The 7" single of 'A Song From Under The Floorboards' carries the dedication 'For F. D.', which stands for Fyodor Doestoyevski. On the track 'Philadelphia' is the line: "I could have been Raskalnikov/But Mother Nature ripped me off". Raskalnikov is the main character in 'Crime And Punishment', written by Fyodor Doestoyevski. Magazine get played quite often in my house.
@David-ds4mt3 жыл бұрын
Your indeed correct about the conveyor. The large tunnel that Martin got stuck in was in the direction of the hoppers main discharge port, and was the original conveyor of the whole area. It went over the river and delivered coal to the power station, along with a large pipe that used to be inside of that tunnel which delivered fuels like oil and gas. It was elevated on several metal posts with a small walkway along the side of it and many large cable runs along the other side of that tunnel The tunnel leading away from the hopper was also in line with the discharge port, as after the yards expansion, that was the conveyor primarily used for coal, as the lower overhead conveyor was used for those fuels after the overhead conveyor was erected. The tunnel leading away also had a coal conveyor in it, which connected up to the large entrance at the surface. According to some sources online, that large entrance was originally covered over, and held a few small lifts to connect to the larger elevators. The ladder led down to another conveyor apparently. The tunnel then leading away went to the large conveyor elevators, where one of the elevators took coal from the underground to the large overhead conveyor. I assume the hatch with the girder inside the hopper room was potentially a lift of some sorts, or maybe another surface access idk. However the very large filled in tunnel was actually used as a bomb shelter, and after the war, was used to house other things and connected to the other coal hoppers around the area

I love Tank Rover!! Love the roar of the engine! It was a great idea, even if it didn't work in the mud!

Great stuff! just been in that area today , found the steps as I've already been in the other end of the tunnel ( that mud beat me too) so great to see another piece of the jigsaw
