The markings are boolean algebra, and the raised panels indicate brackets. It's easy to figure out once you realise that and you know your boolean algebra, but the not symbols are easy to miss in one part.

Interesting. I sort of reasoned my way through it with trial and error, because I don't remember ever figuring out exactly why it worked, other than knowing it was some sort of sequence.
