The Turkish republic is turning 100 - but for Turkish journalist Can Dündar, this is no cause for celebration. His view is also shared by the writer Aslı Erdoğan, who was imprisoned in Turkey for publishing material critical of the regime.
Aslı Erdoğan was arrested in Istanbul in 2016 in a wave of detentions of staff at a pro-Kurdish newspaper. Since 2017, the multi prize-winning author has shared the fate of Can Dündar - exile in Berlin. In the film, both reflect on the human rights crisis in their Turkish homeland: Parliamentary democracy is hanging on by a thread; there is almost total disregard for press freedom and freedom of expression; many critics of President Erdoğan are in prison. By moving further and further down a path of Islamisation, Turkey is also distancing itself from the vision of the founder of the republic Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who wanted a secular nation based on the western model.
But the dream of a democratic Republic of Turkey hasn’t been completely snuffed out - thanks to the many democrats determined not to give up their fight. Can Dündar introduces a few of them:
The Istanbul-based human rights lawyer Eren Keskin has opted to stay in Turkey, despite numerous charges against her. For more than 30 years, she’s been giving a voice to Kurds first and foremost, as well as the LGBT community. She represents transsexuals in Istanbul who’ve been facing increasing hostility in recent years.
Yeter Gültekin is a member of the Alevi minority. Her husband was killed 30 years ago in an attack on Alevis in the Turkish city of Sivas. Since then, she has campaigned for the crime to be investigated and the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
Sezgin Tanrikulu is a Kurd and member of parliament representing the opposition Republican People’s Party CHP. Although President Erdoğan has been gradually eroding the powers of Turkey’s Grand National Assembly, Tanrikulu has been working from Ankara to focus public opinion on the situation in Kurdish regions.
The film accompanies these people in their daily battles against repression and ignorance, shows how their efforts give hope to the victims of human rights abuses - and just how much personal risk is involved. Can Dündar allows them to tell their stories, even though he is himself unable to travel to his homeland. Consequently, this situational report on the Republic of Turkey on its 100th birthday is also infused with the pain of exile.

In the face of adversity, "The Republic's Unseen Heroes" documentary paints a vivid portrait of resilience and determination. Aslı Erdoğan, Can Dündar, and these remarkable individuals are beacons of hope in a challenging landscape. Their unwavering commitment to democracy and human rights is truly inspiring. Thank you for shedding light on their stories and the plight of the Republic of Turkey.

" The ship is sinking" for many people of Turkish origin like myself who have lived all or the majority of their lives abroad we do not understand the pain and suffering of those who have lived there and been through much hardship with many of the issues we as " Free" people live. As one who came when I was 2 years of age to Canada and has been back many times even to do military service, I still have a tough time understanding how it all doesn't work and why it doesn't all work. Sadly I don't believe that much will change for the better in the ways we would hope. The last election solidified the way the Gov has placed a hold on the people which says a lot about the depth of how frightened the Turkish people really are. Many will leave if they can, many will never go back. I would sadly tell Can Dundar to prepare his grave site in Germany because it will not change in his lifetime Im afraid.

The thing is when turkish government took the power in Turkey they were supported by litterally every western country and even leftish turks. Back than this scenario in todays Turkey could only been a scenario, today it is the reality. I don’t think it is about islam though, it is about power, money, extremism, which can be dangerous in any country.

I know Turkey pretty well. Overall, Turkish people still love Mustafa Kemal Atatürk but his ideals are not in line with a lot of things that have been happening in the country over the past 10-15 years. Just like the US, Turkey is regionally divided into conservative and progressive parts, which are worlds apart. For any country to stay healthy, a ruler needs to change every 4-10 years. I'm afraid things will get noticeably worse in this beautiful country if nothing changes politics wise.

"In fact i knew very little what was going on in turkey, i was ashamed" Still better a reaction than attacking those who have the currage to critique those in power. I am german and i never minded immigration. Turkish people work hard and have amazing food to say the least. We were in schools together and later in workplaces and usually that was never an issue. Still growing up when seeing groups of "them" aggressivly going against others or now at times on social media the way some try to suffocate a critical voice gives me pause on how compatible our two cultures really are. Erdogan has been a thorn in the side of the EU on a regular bases and with him turkey as a whole. Over decades turkey tried to align with europe and that i applaud, then that stopped. An application to the EU failed due to human rights violation, right? Erdogan instead went more towards a strongman image, an autocrat and again seemingly most turkish people seem to like that. Feeling strong through the postures of their leader and showing patriotism and nationalism, feeling pride as otherwise they may not have reasons for it maybe, i don't know. Still it all influenced my stances towards turkey and its people, now rather not wanting the turkish state to join the EU. That is thanks to Erdogan and his followers. I see the tragedy in that, when seeing intellectuals fleeing then to germany. That there are those who are close to our way of thinking here, but got their roots ripped out in turkey by the oppresive and not to be questioned nature of the majority and state in turkey. How is it we in germany accept religios organisations being sponsored by another state? Why should we accept people to have dual citizenship with more than one passport? Especially if the other nation does not share our values. Then again we now here in germany have the AFD getting stronger, how long till we see them doing unspeakable things should they gain real power? How long till then intellectuels and journalists are taking refuge in other nations? The AFD already had deathlists and yet the party was not fobidden, why? marvels Avangers: "someone give that woman a kitten"

The EU often uses discourse on democracy and human rights to criticize Turkey, especially its counter-terrorism policies. However, we see that EU countries are approving, even supporting, Israel's severe violations of the Geneva Convention in its attacks on Gaza. The statement by the Israeli Defence Minister, giving the Israeli army free rein to do whatever they want, has not even been criticized by the EU. The EU has lost all its credibility on democracy and human rights during the bombing of Gaza. From now on, if you criticize Turkey on counter-terrorism, the response you will get from the Turks will be "go to hell."

The biggest example of this is my friend's aunt, who was not accepted to school because she wore a headscarf, even though she was good at school, and many Turkish women with headscarves had to study abroad. Although Türkiye has always been on the side of oppressed countries, we have never been a religious country. İn Turkish policy I just don't like their Israeli policy. We see Jewish people as our brothers and sisters. Only in this issue we don't agree with Ərdoğan as Turks. But his other actions are the best❤

There is just one wrong action in Turkish policy, and its their policy against Jewish people by doing unjustice against Israel. Hamas is a terrorist organisation and Erdogan doesnt accept this. Only this is his wrong side and exception from this, we support him in other issues as Turks. Erdogan is the best man

I disagree with you, Erdogan is an authoritarian which manipulate the people with religion, religion must be outside of politics it's two different branches. He began his political career like a friend of western countries and slowly, slowly he returns to authorisation. Erdogan of today has no respect to journalists,to political opponents and the freedom of speech. Literally he is a small Putin!!!

The captive Germany, which was disgraced and defeated by the Americans, has been under American occupation for 78 years and is still under the occupation of 40,000 American soldiers. Germany is acting on the orders given by America to realize the 105-year-old Wilson principles, has recruited its devşirme recruits for the Cruaders from among the Turks, with the aim of balkanizing the Anatolia as was achieved by the Crusaders of WWI in the Balkans and the Middle East. The voice of Germany's this propaganda is an espionage activity, a Goebels type effort which is doomed to failure.

Wow,a great leader? What makes a man great leader? To put the journalist and political opponents in prison 😂? Do you remember Putin? He was a great leader in some people minds 😂 but he isn't now. To be evil and manipulate the people with lies, corruption and relion doesn't makes him a great leader. They are politics with law profile who made great things for their people without the great leaders 's glory.
