" The ship is sinking" for many people of Turkish origin like myself who have lived all or the majority of their lives abroad we do not understand the pain and suffering of those who have lived there and been through much hardship with many of the issues we as " Free" people live. As one who came when I was 2 years of age to Canada and has been back many times even to do military service, I still have a tough time understanding how it all doesn't work and why it doesn't all work. Sadly I don't believe that much will change for the better in the ways we would hope. The last election solidified the way the Gov has placed a hold on the people which says a lot about the depth of how frightened the Turkish people really are. Many will leave if they can, many will never go back. I would sadly tell Can Dundar to prepare his grave site in Germany because it will not change in his lifetime Im afraid.

I know Turkey pretty well. Overall, Turkish people still love Mustafa Kemal Atatürk but his ideals are not in line with a lot of things that have been happening in the country over the past 10-15 years. Just like the US, Turkey is regionally divided into conservative and progressive parts, which are worlds apart. For any country to stay healthy, a ruler needs to change every 4-10 years. I'm afraid things will get noticeably worse in this beautiful country if nothing changes politics wise.

The EU often uses discourse on democracy and human rights to criticize Turkey, especially its counter-terrorism policies. However, we see that EU countries are approving, even supporting, Israel's severe violations of the Geneva Convention in its attacks on Gaza. The statement by the Israeli Defence Minister, giving the Israeli army free rein to do whatever they want, has not even been criticized by the EU. The EU has lost all its credibility on democracy and human rights during the bombing of Gaza. From now on, if you criticize Turkey on counter-terrorism, the response you will get from the Turks will be "go to hell."

The biggest example of this is my friend's aunt, who was not accepted to school because she wore a headscarf, even though she was good at school, and many Turkish women with headscarves had to study abroad. Although Türkiye has always been on the side of oppressed countries, we have never been a religious country. "In fact i knew very little what was going on in turkey, i was ashamed" Still better a reaction than attacking those who have the currage to critique those in power. I am german and i never minded immigration. Turkish people work hard and have amazing food to say the least. We were in schools together and later in workplaces and usually that was never an issue. Still growing up when seeing groups of "them" aggressivly going against others or now at times on social media the way some try to suffocate a critical voice gives me pause on how compatible our two cultures really are. Erdogan has been a thorn in the side of the EU on a regular bases and with him turkey as a whole. Over decades turkey tried to align with europe and that i applaud, then that stopped. An application to the EU failed due to human rights violation, right? Erdogan instead went more towards a strongman image, an autocrat and again seemingly most turkish people seem to like that. Feeling strong through the postures of their leader and showing patriotism and nationalism, feeling pride as otherwise they may not have reasons for it maybe, i don't know. Still it all influenced my stances towards turkey and its people, now rather not wanting the turkish state to join the EU. That is thanks to Erdogan and his followers. I see the tragedy in that, when seeing intellectuals fleeing then to germany. That there are those who are close to our way of thinking here, but got their roots ripped out in turkey by the oppresive and not to be questioned nature of the majority and state in turkey. How is it we in germany accept religios organisations being sponsored by another state? Why should we accept people to have dual citizenship with more than one passport? Especially if the other nation does not share our values. Then again we now here in germany have the AFD getting stronger, how long till we see them doing unspeakable things should they gain real power? How long till then intellectuels and journalists are taking refuge in other nations? The AFD already had deathlists and yet the party was not fobidden, why? marvels Avangers: "someone give that woman a kitten"

I was born and raised in Germany, have seen the double standard thousand times. Why were Cevheri Guven and Ahmet Nesin not invited for this documentary? They are two of the most important journalists in Germany who had to leave Turkey due to similar reasons. Your discrimination still persists, Can Dundar.

Cevheri Guven & Ahmet Nesin then are/were not as indigenous as the persons that were mentioned; i.e. one can (relatively) easy justify the harm done to them by them working in/for Germany.
