I remember when turn based RPGs were a necessity, because maybe the technology hadn't caught up to the imaginations of what developers wanted to do (talking early console generations here). And you were right, developers like square learned the wrong lessons about why their games weren't doing well. Luckily, having the biggest RPG of a generation, Baldurs Gate 3, be pure turn based should show that the genre is far from dead. It just needs innovation in storytelling, diversity in characters, and the freedom of choice Larian's masterpiece allows (such as the ability to play co-op). Great vid once again

It's not only back but Atlus is leading the charge HARD!!! What used to be the Walmart version of Square, Atlus, is cooking hard. While I'm neither team turn based or team action, I do believe where Square has truly lost is their ability to craft GREAT stories. Square can still craft good stories, but they have definitely gotten lazy and coasted on legacy alone, which has allowed Atlus to creep up on them. Persona is unironically about to get another surge of players with Metaphor being the first atlus title for a lot of people. Forgot to add that the heart of an rpg is the role-playing aspect, which is why BG3 is like an infinite money hack. But outside of BG3, it doesn't matter how flashy and new the game is if the story is lazy or the game play time is padded out by fluff content.
@TheCollective13 ай бұрын
Straight up facts right it here! You know what’s funny though. I actually enjoyed the story and some of the gameplay of final fantasy 16! But a lot of it was just pointless side quests and a pretty mediocre combat system. I truly believe that had that game been turn based, it would have had a completely different turnout.
@larrywoolfolk82243 ай бұрын
@TheCollective1 i enjoyed 16 way more than whatever KH3 or FF7R was trying to do, but I was not prepared for metaphor. I have not felt whatever I was feeling playing Metaphor since playing FFX when it came out. They have proven that while there are many good stories, there can only be so many great ones, and Metaphor has earned that crown.
@juzweytnc3 ай бұрын
Both Square (FF) & Enix (DQ) are leading the way back then and with some support from Capcom (BoF), Game Arts (Lunar and Grandia) and Konami (Suikoden). But clearly it is Atlus now at front while SquareEnix definitely step back and even let Enix franchise (DQ) and new IP taking charge. The last turn based game in FF series was 20+ years ago. But honestly, small companies doing indie games are doing some heavy lifting to keep the turn based still relevant.

We are going to see more and more turn base games. It's been around for a long time. People think RPGs started in Japan but they are wrong is started in Amarica. IDK man, the people that hate turn base RPGs don't know the history of gaming. These old school RPG computer games and tabletop RPGs gave us everything we see in media today. Like horror movies, fantasy like star wars or lord of the rings. Monsters like Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Dark Crystal, and so much more. I watched the news D&D movie and that movie was really fun and awesome. If people ever wanted a Final Fantasy Live Action movie then the new D&D movie has you covered.

peak is finally back, i am a big time hater of the shit they where doing , turning TURN BASED RPG games into action based, like what they did with final fantasy, thankfully ATLUS is here, hopefully they wont turn to the dark side, there are space to have both, i dont hate franchises that STARTED as action based, there is many that i love from even before the ps1, i hate when they CHANGE one to that with the excuse "new players dont like turn based, they like action, they cant focus and turn based is too slow" that excuse is just such a cop out but ngl, i am a bit worried about the DS and 3DS atlus games, i KNOW they gonna remake them at some point since a port from that console is hard to do, and i FEAR, i SHIT MY PANTS with the thought of them remaking those games and not keeping their gameplay, changing just because, like, i love turn based, but a dungeon crawler like strange journey, a real time strategy like devil survivor SHOULD STAY THAT WAY when leaving the DS family

We don't want turn based or action RPGs. We want GOOD RPGs. The problem that Final Fantasy is encountering is that they are copying someone else's formula and not playing to their home grown strengths. So you end up with something that is just.. okay.. an acceptable imitation. But imitations rarely thrill and delight.
@TheCollective13 ай бұрын
I’ll agree with the fact that square keeps making final fantasy mediocre, but we absolutely want turn based and action rpgs! I get what you’re saying but these mechanics are fundamental to the game and they really go hand in hand with a compelling storyline!
@thisguy45053 ай бұрын
@@TheCollective1 what I mean is that the game style doesn't matter 🤷🏻♂️ SquareEnix has been thinking that if they just copy Western styles, that this will make the games popular and successful, because Western games have been popular and successful. But, like you said in the video, in the process they removed what had already made their games popular and successful. They have been chasing a phantom audience to the detriment of their existing audience. A great and engaging story can come from anywhere. One of the most moving game experiences I've ever had was recently when I played Outer Wilds, where there is no combat and you mostly walk around looking at things and solving a few environmental puzzles. Outer Wilds was totally unique and extremely impactful. The uniqueness is what has been missing from a lot of JRPGs in recent years, whatever their specific gameplay might be. The more that they further copy Western games, the less unique they become.

People liked Final Fantasy because there was nothing like it. Once they started trend chasing, they lost their identity and started coming off as bad imitations of superior games they were trying to copy. I will never understand those who say that Final Fantasy was always about changing to justify Square-Enix erasing integral elements. Yes, changing locations/settings, themes, characters, music, etc-- but always remembering that it was a strategic, story driven, ensemble cast experience that put more effort into its narrative than trying to be the every-game for every-one, which in effect made the games for no one. This lack of consistency in the last 20 years makes it feel like every new FF game is a one-off experiment. They no longer have the solid foundation they worked off from FF1-10, because they threw it all away to chase this illusory expanded audience that never manifested into reality, while others like Atlus continue to take great elements from previous works (Metaphor's inspirations drawing directly from Persona 5), and continue to grow and please audiences absolutely craving unique JRPG experiences with strategic combat versus watered-down, button-mashy, unsatisfying DMC rip offs. Final Fantasy was always more than chocobos, moogles, and it's main orchestral theme. The familiar skin doesn't hide the lack of depth and substance in the games released in the last two decades. They've lost their way, and I don't know if they're making it back.

Couldn’t agree with you more. I have no problem with innovation and change as long as it’s still that og experience to the core and you just don’t really get that from the games after 10.

As someone who hates turn-based RPGs, and I mean I really don't like them, they are by far the most boring style of game to me. I still support the turn-based genre staying alive because that means that they typically drop a lot of action RPGs as spinoffs to the turn-based ones which gives me more ARPGs and action-adventure games to play in return

Y'all being a little dramatic, if I'm being honest. We have NEVER lost turn based RPGs. Just because Some of the biggest franchises have entries that AREN'T doesn't mean that no one is doing them. There are so many from so many varying creators. And there are so many great ARPGs and I would hate for those to stop because y'all are trying to push this narrative that ARPGs are bad. But this is why I always tell people, venture out from the AAA game market. What you want is out there being made by people like us. These big companies are motivated by money and they chase trends because they have shareholders and investors that fund them that need to have that return on investment. But indies, and sometimes smaller teams at these big companies, give us games like Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars, Octopath, Bravely Default, Cassette Beats, Monster Sanctuary, Slay the Spire, Darkest Dungeon, Across the Obelisk, Beneath Oressa, Battle Chasers, The Ruined King, Star Renegades. And this is intentionally leaving out most of the strategy RPGs as well. Final Fantasy is not all of JRPGs.
@TheCollective13 ай бұрын
I agree with you, and this video isn’t necessary trying to attack Arpg’s. It’s more so directed at the companies that are trying to leave turn based rpg’s behind and make them these over the top action games. Actually it’s mostly just Square Enix with final fantasy. And obviously AAA rpgs garner more attention then most of the smaller indie rpgs so that’s why we’re all kind of annoyed by it but, you’re 100% correct in that the indies and smaller devs have been mostly keeping it alive.
@juzweytnc3 ай бұрын
Well, thanks to indies and AA games, Turn based jrpg staying afloat. BUT that doesn't warrant AAA or AAAA treat Turn Based reserved for class B or C games. I kinda agree that it is not lost but I think it's more on the perception of AAA company towards Turn based as forgotten art. And for Persona, SMT and now Metaphor: Re Fantazio (and possibly CO:E33) showcasing it in full potential is still something worth celebrating.
