Although, I have to admit, those trebles are blending in in a rather pleasing way!

I live a few hundred yards away from these bells and love to hear them. I'm musical but rather glad I'm no bell expert as a critical ear clearly spoils the experience! At close range they sound harsh I agree, but they weren't meant to be listened to at point blank range.

And this is where the National 12 Bell Striking Competition Finals are being held in 2012... great choice of venue! I imagine listening to these milk bottles all day will drive everyone insane...

Melbourne is a really lovely place and, whilst the beauty of tone of this ring of bells doesn't match up to the surroundings, they're nevertheless quite useful as a ring of twelve. The trebles are clear and easy to pick out in changes, and the "go" is super for somewhere with such a long draught.

The trebles sound like 'small peal' bells :P

Not to my taste, but they they are not as bad as I expected. Certainly more useful as a 12 than as a crap 8 (which I rang on). The trebles are a classic example of how not to augment an old style ring (in my humble opinion). The higher the pitch gets, the nominal goes out of audible range and the ear picks out the fundamental and hum partials. If these are out of tune with each other, they sound sour. Gently flattening the hums on the front bells until you get to "simpson" would work better.

Hadn't thought of that... they are indeed a sort of Midlands response to Quex Park!

I thought they were easy to ring well, rung a couple of good peals here.

Having now been to ring at Melbourne, I can tell you that the bells are better in real life. Admittedly, they're not the best by any means, but I thought they were alright. The modern trebles are quite nasty on their own, but were probably tuned as such so that they created a half-decent 12, and it worked.
@95tupolev12 жыл бұрын
They should have tuned the back 8 and added 4 true-harmonic trebles, then they would have sounded half decent.
@irkibby12 жыл бұрын
I was too expecting worse. In changes the 4 trebles sound a lot better than they do individually.

Another quality video, Paul! They are a bit like a Taylor pre simpson version of Quex Park, only not as horrible! I'd say they are much more useful as they are than just being a bland old pre simpson eight, which was all they were before!

That is a great video, very well shot and in b&w which really adds to the interest. Also that was top ringing, must admit that they sound a bit like tin cans but that is only my opinion. How good it would sound with Simpson tuned bells.

Re my earlier comment I think the problem with the sound is that the 4 new bells are not sympathetic to the lovely sound of the original Taylor's 8

So very true. As it is they created a famous ring of bells, for all the wrong reasons...
