Early on in basic, you are glad if someone screws up because he'll get yelled at, not you. By the second week, everybody gets punished if anybody screws up, and you and everybody else stops being glad about screw-ups.

The military uses fear and peer pressure plus propaganda to manipulate people into acting against their self preservation and self interest. There's a reason that kids out of high school tend to be the ones joining while older people aren't prime candidates because they're more likely to rebel.

You say that as if the USA military isn't the strongest in the world. And it's not to get everyone hating each other, it's to get everyone else bonding over their hate for that guy who made them do laps. This kind of stuff does work. It's also to humiliate the guy who made the mistake/broke a rule, they all need to be able to depend on each other in life of death situations, no one wants to be that guy.

Frankly, I never saw a drill Sgt do this. On a march we had one guy who had to run around the platoon as we marched. Wearing his gas mask that he lost. He got tired, I and another guy broke formation and helped him. At the end of the March we went to chow. DI pulled me and the other guy and put us at the front of the line.

The hardest part for me was not laughing when the instructors started yelling. Got smoked the day after my birthday in basic for not telling anyone that my birthday was the day before but we had land nav that day and I didn't make a big deal out of my birthday anyways so I never brought it up to anyone but my land nav group. One of the best birthdays I've ever had.

My birthday was during Basic Training. I didn't mention it. There's no way I wanted any more attention from the Instructors than I was already getting by having to face the Snake Pit in the Dining Hall nearly every meal as Chow Runner! The next evening, when we got back from training, there was pizza for our flight and our Sister Flight. The Squadron Commander said that although I sought out no attention for my birthday, but carried on as a team player, the team would be rewarded.

I guess they learned a thing or two from the fragging back in Vietnam (tossing a live grenade into an officer's tent, since you know, grenades self-destruct leaving little evidence behind and it's difficult to tell if what happened was a fragging or enemy action, and if fragging everyone was likely so sick of the officer that nobody who could know or suspect anyone would come forward anyways).

At the rifle range fellow cigarette smokers had left cigarette butts scattered in the areas behind the targets, known as "the butts" You raise and lower targets and mark where the bullets strike. I was told to leave my rifle, with my 1/2 section and depart for the butts... Myself an about 8 other recruits were cleaning the butts and upon returning we went to our respective sections to retrieve our rifles. The 4 I left my rifle with said that they forgot to grab it on the way out. It was found all by itself .Back on base standing before the man, I tell him my story and he turns to the Sgt. and says "I want these 4 up here now." I interceded saying "It was my fault for leaving my rifle with incompetants, mine alone, I'll take the punishment." He commended for that and then gave me one weekend CB''d.(confined to barracks)

We have worse enemies than Afghanistan. The decision to leave materiel was not a decision made by Congress or the president. The was the decision, or at least recommendation, of military brass. The value of materiel left behind upon the withdrawal was $7 billion. Only a fool would believe it was $80 billion. Do you know how many degrees of magnitude more that is? The costs of transporting that equipment back to the U.S. (while keeping troops in-country to protect those performing that extraction) would easily exceed the fair marker value of the battle-used materiel.) And very little of this abandoned property was of combat value. Most of it consisted of shelving, desks, filing cabinets, cots, food service equipment, etc. Do you really think the military left $80 billion of brand new tanks, helicopters, missile lanchers, small arms, ammo, etc. You really ought to pause and think before you pop off with silly "facts" to simply support some political motive you have. Your willingness to blindly accept (and propagate) such dribble being fed to you without critically analyzing it makes you one of the "sheeple" you enjoy branding with the same label describing your own conduct. Freedom requires a bit of cynicism, my friend. Don't believe all that you are told.

Yeah the us military allows this in basic training but (at least in the marine idk about the other branches) once you become a marine you don't get this sorta treatment at least your not supposed to. Our oic was running pt with us and people went back to there barracks rooms without permission so he made us run more and more and more. We started at 4 and didn't finish until color's missing chow and having 30 minutes to shower change and form up. Our Sargent made us hold a plank for 4 minutes and if one of us dropped we started over cus someone was not at pt. A marine was caught throwing rocks at someone so we all stood out in the desert sun formed up and we were called to attention and parade rest over and over for hours. And this is just the tip of the ice berg. Some marines have gotten permanently injured and separated because the hazing is so bad

@@johnstuartsmithyes but not only is it ineffective, it straight up causes serious harassment and beatings at night for some recruits and so on, there are better methods that exist that aren't used. When I was in watched one person jump and kill themselves because of thr harassment he received another we were told was beaten to death for getting his division beaten for only like 2 hours or something and wasn't even that serious of a beating either some people just aren't ok in the head at all.. Also for female divisions good God the harassment women are just nasty to eachother not sure how many offed themselves but it wasn't pretty and our sister division had 2 that I know of and one beaten so badly she was sent home. I know covid sure as hell didn't help.. For me well I was harrased and going through panic attacks at the time due to the isolation and being cooped up during quarantine despite never getting covid ever while I was in, at one point it was so bad I snapped put a hole into the barracks wall instead, beat my rack a few times. Decided to let my RDC know at the time as well dude was actually overly chill about it, got me bandaged up and I sat away for a bit while he screamed at everyone for a bit and when chief showed up well chief wasn't as nice but still let them off because of covid probably regulations or something idk. Needless to say people didn't fuck with me and two others knew what I was going through, one had a daughter waiting for him he messed up I think he was 18 or something and got a 15 year old pregnant she didn't look 15 at all.. he didn't bother checking and found out later. He was pushing himself for a better life for her, mad respect to that man even took the heat off me for a bit because my girl was nearly 18 and me 21 when we started dating, only a few months off, another not as bad at all I don't remember if he had a kid or not but yeah he was in for her and probably possible kid. So the drill sgt smiled and turned to use and said “since your batttle buddy wants to be an individual and not train you all will pay for it” he started smoking us and made him watch and he went from that tough badass look to the look at what he was doing for us it lasted about 10-15 mins and eventually he saw that he was fucking over people that just wanna come and get this over with and that tough look started fading and fading until he realized that it wasn’t him who was paying for it but a bunch of people who didn’t deserve it he eventually said he was gonna do it so he joined us for about 1-2 mins and we stopped and went inside our barracks and he got an article 15 for refusing disciplinary action. He changed real quick and ended up being a leader and got hurt about 2 weeks after that and had to get medically discharged but he came back to watch us graduate.

It ain’t. I went through the same shit in US navy bootcamp. There was one day there was this fucker who just couldn’t stay in step on our way to graduation practice, and we got IT’d 13 different times over a half a mile March. Either you were in a soft division or you ain’t in the navy yet

When I was in basic, the Drill Sgt punished the screw up by punishing the whole platoon except the screw up. Then the screw up received a blanket party.

The whole point of that kind of punishment is to make them realize that their actions while effect everyone around you. Better to learn it there then to learn it the hard way in the field. Its why the one the many reasons why the US has such a strong military.
