i am a carpenter, and so most of my Analogies relate to tools. the Tyranid warrior is the adjustable wrench of the Tyranid armed forces. an Adjustable wrench is practical for a wide number of applications and capable of addressing an even wider number, but all applications tend to have a more specialized bespoke counterpart. for the hive fleet it may not always be practical to boil up the exact solution to every problem, and many problems can be resolved by warriors. but much like trying to rebuild your car's engine with an adjustable wrench would be a nightmarish waste of time and effort, the Hive fleet will happily bust out the Lictors when large scale and bespoke infiltration is needed. but when it just needs a little scoche of infiltration on the side for one stubborn strongpoint, throw some warriors at it. are you really gonna go dig out your socket set to change one nut? ofocurse not. get the adjustable wrench.

Plus... the first planet ever! Was likely consumed over centuries at the fastest with more garden worlds in system to practice on. I am of the outsider theory. They already consumed at least one galaxy and we are seeing them millions of years of practice and evolution at work. In 3e (the first codex I owned) was quick to point out the new types of creatures evolved in this galaxy after some victories. Zenothropes are eldar based. Somewhere out there is a dead galaxy that REQUIRED warriors and tyrants and carnifexes to consume it. Those strains are only going to get tougher in this one. I also don't believe that they are near starving or we wouldn't have splinter fleets; they would have all died after Macragge. Sure... never full but also the bioships are never truly empty. Some troops are living on a timer but not the ships and queens.

I think there are some interesting parallels between the Tyranids as a whole and a single human both of them use their senses to gather information and resources in the most energy efficient away available to them but the big difference is that us humans have stockpiles of food which means we have a lot of leftover energy to do other things where as the Tyranids are constantly starving so they are forced to keep looking for food but that means they're very good at getting food because it's the one thing that the hive mind focuses on just like specialization in humans.

A cool thing about not telling your captains the full strategy is they can treat every attack as legit, which tricks interrogators, confuses spies, and generally let's you perform probing attacks as probing attacks without unnecessary punishment. Can't do that with hive tyrants, you need a separate lower rank commander to do it. Also the Tyranids don't need to take every fortress, just surround the strong points and suck the organic resources and water up before leaving. This is what Warriors are best at. Keeping enemies in cities and letting you take what you came for and leaving the nuts that aren't worth cracking in a wasteland. Because siege defenders aren't going to launch cross continent raids when advanced pseudo-generals are engaging them in a faux siege. It's an exceptionally convincing sock puppet used to trick you while an intergalactic invader steals your lunch, your girl, and your dog. But it leaves you alone. Unless? OwO.

My pet theory on the 'Nids 'evolution' isn't so much they were made by the old ones but a bi-product of the aftermath, formed at the tail end of the enslavers plauge. With the psychic food source the enslaverers depended on dwindling a portion of them adapted to feed on the physical biomatter instead as if the sentient were culled there was plenty of non-sentient bio-mass, maybe all those Elder they'd eaten made them smart enough to reform themselves, becoming the bio-ships and spawning hordes of lesser creatures to gather the bio-mass for them.... Its a half assed theory based on little more than a Bio-ship looks a bit like an extremely large enslaver but given the timing of the enslavers plauge and the hints that 'Nids originated in or at least passed through the 40k galaxy previously it makes a certian sense

That is a nightmare scenario for the Tau. Tau fight best when they can maneuver and use hit and run tactics. They like being able to give up ground now to retake it later. Any ground that you do not defend, however, the Tyranids will literally eat. There will not be a later. Further, the swarms of Tyranid bodies are like walls, gradually closing in around the planet's defenders, strangling movement options one by one. The Tyranids force the Tau to fight on the Tyranids terms and a blueberry vs a Hive Tyrant isn't a fun matchup for the blueberry. The one time the Tau fought a hive fleet, it was as fragment of a fragment. Hive Fleet Gorgon couldn't field the normal numbers of organisms as a true hive fleet and so lacked tactical options. It still massacred worlds before the Tau could finally concentrate enough of their forces to kill it.

Realistically? The Tau would get eaten. It might take a while, but it's happening. The nids definitely have more bodies to throw at the problem than the Tau have bullets. But since GW really seem to love their blueberries, the Tau would win by plot magic.

And with the slow speed of tau FTL there’s just no way to get enough boots on the ground to even make enough space to use their mobility. They’d just be swarmed by gaunts covering every inch of ground. Tau pretty much had to change their entire doctrine of war just to deal with the small splinter fleet that ended the Damocles gulf crusade. We got the lovely storm surge out of it and the taus doctrine of moving walls and slowly fall back and fire everything until there’s just no more ammo left or no more ground to fall back to. Then gtfo and hope reinforcements have made it to the next planet in line.

Can we send Tyranids to California?

Nids are not canonical in 40k. They are just to retcon things.

Because Warhammer is a inconsistent universe the Tyranids may actually just be humans trying to stop the Imperium’s Nazi slavery trail of tears. - Templin Institute

Ma latest timeline head canon. So.... During the War in Heaven, the Old Ones decided it would be a good idea to search "outside" their galaxy to find allies. What they found instead was the Tyranid. (still annoyed they didn't make them) This TERRIFIED the Old Ones soooo badly, that in their shock and dismay the "Enslavers" were accidentally crapped out. (Funny how they resemble certain Tyranid bioforms.....) The Old Ones "also" knew they had been marked by the Tyranid and simply could not use the warp anymore or they would "show the way." In response, they "ended" the War in Heaven, more on that later, and proceeded to seed the Galaxy with as many War-like races as Toadly possible, and then either "offed' themselves or hid in a warp tunnel... I'm betting on the latter as they are the only ones with the Krork "off" button. Bad News, Big E's lighthouse either uses energy "from" that particular warp tunnel or the whole thing is more than likely just one of the toadies' left over power amplifiers. Both potentials lead to one result. "Dinner Bell...." Good news, we've been undergoing a Big E and Horus based Warp Revolt for 10,000 years, so bad even the Krork and Necron are getting roused from their "this is boring" slumber. You go and write down every single thing you could possibly think of to insult the Warp and make it Government Policy, kill all their followers, and have their own half-warp-born and brainwashed children do it for you... This was a Gauntlet hurled at the Warp, and for 10k years the Great Game spilled into real space, just long enough for the Nids to show up. The Old One's "delayed" the Tyranid wave, but we've also been prepared to the point even the "Warp" is Anathema to everything the Tyranid represent, if not almost a galaxy wide manifested intent on, "no you are not going to graze here, that's our job...."(at the very least) Which amusingly enough includes the Krork and Necrons in that attitude alone. As a galaxy we are prepared to fight, with, "or without" the Warp, or even against it. Name your flavor we got something designed to simply destroy it... Not many Galactic Empires can boast that, as the Eldari at their prime would have been NERFED once Nulled.... ...also proven not particularly good at fighting against it.... We needed the fire of urgency, and nothing can make you paranoid quite like the collective over-active imagination of a few bazillion humans made manifest...... We're so good we can even "adopt" other Species' God's. (which is why Big E tried to limit that exposure...) The Eldari had to literally effer around to find out how to make 1 and 1/2 effective Effective Warp Gods in 60 million years, as humans however we are quite literally capable of making it up, on our own, where we go, as we go. ** Side note The Old ones told the Necrons the Tyranid would be here in 65 million(ISH) years, and without warp tunnel access they chose to dirt nap, even their own farseers had issue seeing past the present storm. Think less Justice League, more "Get off my Lawn!" They along with the Krork are more fire-shield allies as even the Necron are offended by "flesh" winning anything... much less the best Krump in 60 million years... Its not coincidental both are in the process of pulling out their old school weapons and Primeorks. As the Old One's knew the Tyranid "shadow" can null entire planets, they were like "we got nuttin, even de-boned the Eldari are at least fast, Peace Out...." The Old Ones "knew" the Warp also had to be turned into a sea of boiling angst in order to even have a chance of surviving regardless... As "I'm walking here!" is better than "oh no not again (poof!)" Again nothing the Old Ones could either endure nor enhance through hanging around. On that.... How do you broker (temporary) peace with the Warp Gods as they stand now? Korne is easy. "You want skulls? They are coming my red skinned friend, they are coming to take your skulls cause they say you are weak, so weak you can only watch them take your skulls away from you forever and melt them down to nothing..... The Hive Fleets represent the "end" of the Great Game, and that simply can not happen." ** Last note, the Maladictum will do wonders for channeling Hive fleets into "zones of preferred food." Something an Inquisitor was censored for trying. And Big E's plan for "preparing" us for this War, answers EVERY Bad Dad joke I've seen so far. Big E didn't want a kinder gentler Angron. "Butcher Nails? Nice. I'm not your real dad, go kill something in that direction you tactical failure." Job achieved.

Yeah Tyranids either were made to be weapons by Old Ones or some other race or at some point some reace turned themselves into the first nids. There is no way anything like that evolved naturally. Also how it is with orks and nids? I'd think the nids would absorb plenty of orciness and become more shroomlike too.
