Perhaps the intent is to enshroud or "cancel out" the Astronomicon, or it could be a strategy against the rampant Warp rifts in the galaxy... Perhaps it's the first in a series of structures needed to cover the entire Galaxy in the Shadow in to break down any coordinated resistance. Now _THAT_ would be scary.

That being said, the form of FTL the Tau use is not warp based IIRC so they have that going for them, they actually did try using a warp drive once but it ended quite poorly for them, no Gellar Fields and all.

Heres a theory Hive fleet Tiamet is connected with Hive Fleet Kronos. Kronos is a splinter fleet that specializes in fighting Chaos corruption and suppressing the influence of the Warp. With the opening of the Great Rift Kronos has become more and more active in its cleansing of Chaotic taint in the galaxy. If the construct Tiamet is building causes immense amounts of Psychic suppression than perhaps Tiamet is the defensive strategy of the Hivemind to Kronos' offensive tactics. The great construct could act similar to the Necron Pylons on Cadia and perhaps once complete would be used to close the Great Rift, so the feast can begin.

I remember playing a game where the end game scene was you (The Tyranids) took over the planet and used it as a solar system base as they devoured the minerals and gases of other planets and did the same there. Using the energy of the sun to grow plant like organisims that also serve as a natural planatary defense. Eventually enough biomass is created natrually thanks to extreme photosynthesis/Radioactive Absorbtion ability you couldve chosen early in the game and BAM. Your a galatic super threat. That's why thiamat fleet is my favourite. It shows that tyranids are actually able to build infrastructure and mayne are even more ontelligent that Imperium thinks.

Not that the 'Nids have not shown already that they are capable of abstract thinking and of some form of creativity, the Swarmlord who can actually act independently comes to mind, but just being capable of building infrastructure and mega-structures is not a sign of intelligence per se. I mean, ants and especially termites can build immense structures, with air condition, perfect road systems and quite sophisticated infrastructure. They even engage in livestock farming or raid other ant colonies in order to take slaves. Which still does not mean that they are _intelligent,_ at least not when you define intelligence as 'capable of abstract thinking'.

Kryptman's theory makes a lot of sense. Tyrannid's gravity bending travel methods are inaccurate. Having a beacon allows for rapid reinforcements from farther distances than the Milky Way.
