Hi Adrian, thanks for showing everything off. It makes me happy to be able to create/offer this stuff that helps other fix up their vintage computers. Between the time I sent the box to you and now Francis and I decided to go ahead and get matching DB-23 plastic hoods made. While you 'can' use a DB25 the holes don't quite line up and they are too large for some applications like the A600.

In the assembly of your little uChip board, the green LED is dim because green LEDs have a higher forward-voltage drop than an equivalent-sized red LED. As a result you need a lower value resistor in-circuit. I've been bitten by this myself in my own retro-mods and general electronic tinkering work (specifically, using a green LED in place of a red one for the ATR swap-button mod when I installed an Incognito board inside one of my Atari 800's).

That is why when I make stuff I use an online calculator to find out what resistance I need for LEDs by typing in the voltage I'm going to use (1.5, 3, 3.3, 5 or 12 volts) and selecting what color LED I need or I figure out how much voltage the LED needs and keep trying different numbers for the resistance on the calculator until I get the right voltage.

Man, I LOVED Italy. Went there a couple years ago. Could not find bad food in Rome if I tried. Everything there was 10/10. But I absolutely fell in love with Venice. I dunno what it was exactly (definitely not the food! haha), it just felt like my soul was “home”. Belgium is also amazing. Great food and beer there. I’m a huge Liege waffles fan. :-) Ghent was a TRIP. It was like this hip modern college town with the most epic history. You can stand on a bridge over a canal and turn around in place. Depending which way you’re facing, you’ll be looking at a freakin _castle_ , or churches and forts older than time itself. The energy of that place is palpable.

Re: Remote. I know exactly what you mean about the Amazon comments. When I'm buying stuff I'll open a half-dozen similar items and head straight to the negative comments on each item. I tend to ignore any positive comments unless they have pictures and specific details to explain why the person is so happy with the purchase. In the end I'll pretty much take a chance buying something that has zero comments before I'll buy one that has well expressed negative comments from a verified owner.

The RPi is not a direct nor fair comparison. The Uzebox is for people who want to make their own video games console and/or program games for a console and understand how every component of the machine works and how every line of the source code that runs it works. They may also be fans of open source hardware, the RPi hardware design isn't open source and you cannot make it from components. Even Linux Torvalds doesn't fully understand every aspect of the Linux kernel. Apples and oranges. Uzebox is not targeting someone who is interested in the Ps5 nor someone interested in the Rpi.

The 4bpp mode could be Mega Drive(I believe Genesis in the US) or SNES style. On the MD, the graphics would be 4bpp, but there were 4 different 16 colour palettes, and each sprite or background layer could choose which of those 4 palettes to use, effectively giving 64 colours. The SNES was 8bpp, but had a 4bpp mode that could use the 256 colours to assign any of 16 palettes of 16 colours to assign to each sprite or background layer. Given how colourful that screen is, I'd say they were using at least something similar.

LOL! When you first said VGA console, I also thought it was a serial console. Probably because that's been on my project list for a long time. I love the idea of building a "universal serial IP KVM", which is like a VGA KVM, but for serial console connections. It would run off an ESP32 or similar microcontroller with wifi, and have a keyboard, mouse and (multiple) serial inputs, and VGA output. You connect it up to a bunch of devices with serial consoles and can control them like you would servers (or PCs) connected to a KVM. But it's also got wifi, so you can also remote access them over the network like an IP KVM, hence the "universal" part in the name. Although it would probably be a lot easier to use a raspberry pie or pie zero or something. In any case, it's been on the backburner for a long time, since messing with vintage computer hardware takes up most of my free time these days. But that VGA console kit does look pretty cool. I'm always surprised about how powerful modern microcontrollers are these days. It really shouldn't be surprising though, considering how many great games were produced in the 8 and 16-bit console era, with much less graphical and computing horsepower. EDIT: I should probably mention I'm highly addicted to Tetris on my game boy colour, so when I saw this had Tetris, I had to consciously tell myself I don't need this before I immediately went and bought one on impulse!

DB refers to the form factor of the connector than usually has 25 pins of that density. DA is what's used on old Mac video ports and PC game ports, typically 15 pins. DE is the size for VGA, COM ports and game ports. The 17, 19, 21 and 23 pin connectors with the same density as DB-25 and DE-9 has, are just nonstandard D-connectors and should be referred to like D-23, not DB-23.

prices aside, I think this is limited to 256k and the commander 16 has like 2mb or something. In the end it's software support that makes or breaks it. I've never heard of this thing and it seems like there is already more software for the c16.

@@thomassmith4999 This device seems to have like 6 programs in total only 3 of them are games (apparently by the people that made it). The commander 16 has a LOT more than that. It has amiga like capabilities graphically. In fact if anything it's more like a SNES graphically. However......since the C16 is constantly being changed and modified people are just going after the basics. However its also getting much, much closer to its final design. As that happens people will put more effort into graphics. right now they are focusing more on game play. That makes sense. The fact is this device is further along. But since it's a virtual unknown........it may not get much software support. Pretty much half the retro community has heard of the Commander 16.

Adrian, open up the remote, and probably the send led is bend. Or maybe even a cheep one, so try to find a good led from a old remote and you are probably going to fix the thing!! It could also be low quality buttons, so replacing those could also be a solution depending on whats the problem actually is.

Get that man Worms, don't think he's tried it. ;) 27:33 How on Earth could such control rotate, it would constantly change keys and you'd be more confused, guess people are just spoiled with 3D games since Forward/Reverse/RotateL&R though simple confuses a lot of people now. I guess a spinner controller(steering wheel) would help but not a lot of that in the 16-bit game era, or 32-bit era which had "tank" controls too for early 3D games like RE. Ah that's what Copper generically refers to, I just call that vertical gradient control since many other platforms like Atari models have that too. Have looked deeper into Amiga hardware but every time I hear Copper I think of the metal heh.

At 20:10 you said it's odd it does not seem to take up the full screen and the menu does take up more of the screen. But it does not! Maybe your mind is being tricked by the black background of the menu but if you look at the vertical bar of the menu screen it reaches the same limits as the demos.

did he do DB23 male and female, for the disk drive port too? with people wanting to do things like Gotek, having external drives is becoming common too. I actually just put my GOTEK in a CUMANA external drive case, as the floppy drive in it was broken, but if I had the option, I would have made my own cable for it.
