One of the most smog producing operations that an engine can perform is starting. When catalytic convertors are not receiving exhaust from the engine, they are cooling down. Catalytic convertors that have cooled down are not able to burn off the smog components in engine exhaust. Add to that the extra smog components in the exhaust due to the engine starting and stopping and you have an engine that will produce more smog. It just doesn't make sense. This is what happens when you let the education system in this country sink to the level it has. Young folks have no idea how to engineer anything nowadays and it keeps getting worse.

Wow you are clueless. For auto start-stop to create less emissions from starting than having the engine running the engine needs to stop for 7 seconds, significantly less than one cycle of lights at an intersection for example. But not enough time for a catalytic converter to cool down. How do you think catalytic converters work on hybrid engines for example? They shut on and off often and its not an issue. Auto start-stop makes an engine produce less pollutants, that is just a fact.

You didn’t mention some vehicles like my dodge has 2 batteries that can go bad at once costing you about $800 to replace both as I had to.
@PatrickBaptist14 күн бұрын
Why people even buy that brand is comical. I service dodge roadside, yeah dodge is the only maker that makes GM look good, fiat junk.

You only have to replace one.

$800 for both is no small expense, that's true.

Dodge can be hit or miss, and it’s tough when you see those issues firsthand. Fiat definitely has its critics too!

any engine, whether it be ICE, turbine, rotary, etc. always uses more fuel to start than idle; and the majority of an engine's wear comes from starting and stopping (especially cold starts)
@4autowheels12 күн бұрын
Starting an engine, especially a cold start, puts a lot more strain on it compared to idling. Plus, it definitely burns more fuel during that process.

I always turn it off .

my 18 Chevy Cruze i drive with "L" mode to bypass that mode, i can control each gear with speed without the clutch. long drive thru lines and train waiting i simply turn off the car
@4autowheels12 күн бұрын
That’s a smart way to handle it! Driving in 'L' mode for better control and turning off the car during long waits sounds like a great way to save wear and tear.

I had to replace the battery (AS supported) twice because of it

LOL this is so dumb, people must have to replace starters when they change oil lol.
@csuengr13 күн бұрын
Your the dumb one. Ten oil changes, still on the original starter.
