I'll never forget the moment I was schooled in the realities of what being a cop really meant. I was still a rookie with about 3 weeks on the street. My FTO and I got a call to a seedy motel about screams being heard. As we pulled up I heard the horrific cry of a small child and charged the room smashing in the door. The child's mother had a hot iron and was pressing it down hard into the bare stomach of the 3 year old. I shoved her out of the way and had to peel the hot iron out of the child's flesh. Based on the depth of the wound she had been doing this for quite some time. I was so enraged I spun to face the mother and was reaching for my revolver. My FTO stepped in front of me and stopped me and said "it's part of the job, you have to learn to deal with it". I never lost it like that again but my eyes were opened that day for sure.

Arcamemnon Horrific. You acted as any sane man would have. And your FTO acted as a tried and tested mentor. Thank you for your service, its unforunate you have to witness such things, but because you did, hopefully that child is healed and alive, and the mother is behind bars. Lucky for her your FTO stopped you from blowing her lights out. Nothing I could say as a civilian will express my support the way Id like it to be recieved, so I just say thank you, and Godspeed sir.

I am a retired Deputy Sheriff, served 21 years with my department. This video is 100% correct. You are going to see the worst things imaginable. But being there to help a victim makes all the bad stuff worth it. I have had parents come up to me years after I responded to a call to their house and thank me saying that the night I spoke to their kid, changed that kids life and turned them from the bad path they were heading down. You do have to face the fact you cannot save everyone. But if you can save one, it makes it all worth it. Throughout my whole career I had one main rule. Treat everyone the way you would want to be treated. It don't matter if you were a victim or a suspect or just a witness. Treat everyone with respect and professionalism. Until that person did something to the contrary then they brought that on themselves. But still stay professional. You will deal with the worst people in society. Put yourself in their position, would you want a cop coming up to you and talking down to you. No so don't do it to others. And remember the better you do your job the longer these people do in jail. And one final thing, don't be afraid to talk to people. You can get alot of information from people just by talking. I had a suspect one time I felt it was about to get into a physical fight when it wad time to arrest him. I could see he knew it was coming and started squaring off, puffing up, when i asked him, dude thats a nice car, what year is it?, something that simple threw him off and just kept asking questions about the car. After a bit he calmed down and when it was time to put him in cuffs, he knew I was there just doing my job and I was human. Best years of my life. So if your considering becoming a law enforcement officer, yes there is alot of bad out there, but the little victories make it all worth it. Stay safe my brothers and sisters

Yeah. I,too, have chronic, clinical depression. Being a police officer isn't what you do see on television. What nobody ever realizes is the mountains of paperwork they have to put up with. You don't ever see that on any TV show. On any police shows on TV. Like the ever-popular TV police show "Law & Order ". ? I wonder if you're detained by the feds, and if they want you to talk to them without legal counsel present, and they try to interrogate you,& somehow they implacate (sorry, it's misspelled) you, don't you have the right to a lawyer? Despite of what I've read of the author David Baldacci's books, that you not entitled to one, until you've been convicted of any crime? Because I don't think it works that way in real life.

And in the movie, that had happened after some couple - who just happened to be black - had gotten pulled over for 'reckless endangerment'. Right in the middle of L.A. 's busy street. Or intersection. Man,that LA cop had no right to do something like that! And I had thought,"Go figure." Being of what a huge mega-city or a major metropolitan city like Los Angeles, California,of their police force being a racist institution. That has been nothing new to LA. (I've never been to LA. And,boy,oh boy,I hope I never do in my lifetime. It's a complicated issue in real life, too.

Los Angeles is WORLDS apart from a city like Corpus Christi,TX. I know that because I had born and raised here in Corpus. Why we natives and veteran transplanted citizens here in my hometown, call it just Corpus, and not formally Corpus Christi,I'll never know. I don't care. Saying just Corpus makes us who live here, look like as of we're hicks, backward, low and narrow socioeconomic group or groups, that makes us look bad. Compared to San Antonio. Or Dallas. Austin. Houston. In Texas. But whatever. (So much of me being from a financially low income socioeconomic nonexistant group. Been like that growing up all my life. Me, being the quite, introverted type. Go figure, huh.) Who knows what the police often think whenever I get stopped on foot. Because I don't own a car.

Let me also add this: I worked in EMS for 7 years as an EMT in the DC area before going on to medical school. It is not at all unusual (at least back in the 80's or 90's) to have cops that have double rolls as volunteer firefighters and paramedics. Because of their police training they saved my ass more times than I can count. Example: An unconscious drunk regained consciousness and grabbed my leg while taking his blood pressure. The guy was huge and I was maybe 19. The FF/Cop sprang into action and had him in a head-lock within 5 seconds. For anyone who thinks cops are pigs, just remember the next time someone breaks into your house or a family member stops breathing or you are in a horrible accident. Chances are, the first people on the scene will be a cop and they will save your ass too. Thank you for your service and thank's for saving my ass.

When they respond to an accident and lie about it , blaming the victim, protecting the person without valid insurance who hit you on a bicycle from the rear, then try to STOP you from filing a report. See how they "save your ass" then. If I had a home invasion, these bozos would probably arrest me, and tell the perp to have a nice night in my home. And NO....I don't have any negative history with them.

Retired eight years ago after twenty years. Some in admin but most on the street. Not a big agency, only about 25 sworn. Everything this officer said is 100 percent true. The glow wears right off after you've seen your third or fourth Signal 46--Dead Body. Welcome to every possible way to decompose, about one per week for us. Very few of them homicides. And after you've walked away from that fatal car wreck that took the life of one of your fellow officers, and a total stranger literally pulls the shirt off his back and offers it to you to wipe your friend's blood off your face because you tried to save him with CPR, and when you and seven other officers carry his coffin the last one hundred feet--well, that's when you understand the meaning of the term "dead weight." You will carry him around for a long time. And then the glorious day comes when your know-it-all elected officials decide that your real function as a police department is "Crime Prevention." Thirty minutes after the clapping ends, a car gets stolen, or a house is burglarized, or some lowlife beats his girl friend into bloody pulp, and guess what? Now it's YOUR fault because you didn't PREVENT THE CRIME from happening. So keep your nose clean and hold on to your shitty-ass pension until you can try to walk away from it all with a little bit of dignity. Good luck with that. Hey, I'm not bitter. Maybe a little cynical, but I never claimed to be Captain America.

Drunk drivers can't see the lines on the road clearly - so they tail a bit behind your break lights in the hopes that at least YOU'RE driving straight and they can just follow your lights for as long as possible. The thing about that is, drunk drivers really can't tell the difference between a moving car's break lights and a red traffic light, or a car stopped at an intersection, or a truck's hazard lights on the highway shoulder, or even Christmas lights on a freaking HOUSE. Swear to God, I've seen drunk drivers hit, flip, kill, and destroy just about anything and anyone in their way. My parents are retired El Paso PD and they used to always tell me - "Remember to look three times before you cross a street, and green does NOT mean 'go'." Don't assume that everyone is driving as safely as you are, be defensive 100% of the time you're behind the wheel of one of those two-ton death machines we call vehicles 😅

Not to start a fight in a comment section, but, regardless of the stress of the job it doesn't excuse the actions of "the bad apples". People aren't anti-police just because they want to be(for the most part), most are that way because of the evil, disgusting, brutal, psychopathic actions of some officers who then receive no punishment. With that being said, every law enforcement officer is a bad apple. Why? You cannot claim to uphold the law, then let your co-worker break the same laws you claim to uphold and call yourself good. To end my comment I would like to say, I am anti-police but I am not anti-officer. I do not like where law enforcement currently is, but I am not specifically against my fellow human beings who choose to be apart of it.

I have been at what I was told a horrific scene... two cops right up close is about all I remember... after as I was being loaded into the ambulance I saw something but put it down to we'll maybe I was dreaming. 4 weeks later I got to meet the two cops and found out that it wasn't a dream. Before the Ambo doors closed I thought I saw one of the cops legs just buckle under him and the other grabbing and holding him.. they looked distraught... turns out - I looked kinda gruesome and they had to we'll hold my bits together... so when the ambulance arrived and took over it was like these two cops (who most certainly saved my life ) were running on adrenaline and once I was safely in the ambulance - they collapsed with exhaustion. But never for one second did I see anything but two strong calm cops do everything they could to keep me awake... which included terrible singing and even more terrible jokes. I could not do what cop/officers (whatever you want to call them) do. They have so much more then physical strength. And I personally will be eternally grateful for the strength the gave me that night many many years ago!

Greatful to hear you are recovering. Yup they sang to me to....it is charming when they are off key... Let there be no doubt that when you sing to someone they shall always turn towards the sound of your heart. Also had a cop sit by my bedside and make an amends to me. He is ah man amongst men. I grow weary of people stating that cops can't make mistakes. They are human as,well. And sometimes the simple acknowledgement is ah greater healing than all the meds or surgery can provide. It is the healing of the soul. It is ah sacred private moment. I don't say his name...no need to create problems for ah mistake that anyone could make. Right now he knows I see him as one of the blue heroes....i call him Officer Hard Knight...it was a hard night when I met him lol. He was hard on me....but what is true as well is he was having a hard night! We worked in out. Privately, nobel...he is a great cop. And I would rather have him on the streets than off. He is the perfect hard core no nonsense guy when your in real trouble. I guess I could have nicknamed him Officer d@!k but after he sat beside me....watching me get meds and drift off into oblivion with double ivs....i remember I was panicked because the meds made me loopy and I began feeling vulnerable. All I could say is..."I'm feeling it...im feeling the meds and I don't like it" I was terrified at the vulnerability the meds forced me into. He gently smiled and rolled closer and warmly smiled and said " nothing is going to happen to you, I Am here. Just rest it's ok. I'm going to be right outside your door and no one is going to hurt you. I give you my word." I wanted to say so much to him...i wanted to thank him, or at least say something snappy and entertaining but couldn't because of the sedation. I just looked up terrified. Muted. Feeling slow and dumb. Many people like the sedation...but for me it means terror. You see I was intentionally set on fire at the age of 4 and sedation meant I was going to get debried, or some other procedure that was,a fate worse than death. It's probably why I don't drink much and never smoke pot....because for me when you guard is down you are vulnerable to a fate worse than death. It doesn't matter that you are 50yrs older....the somatic memory remains. The next cop that came in saw me shaking with shock....i was so cold....he got another blanket and tucked me in like a burrito. X marine....i thanked him for his service in the military and he said humbly...basically I was just an infantry man on the ground. I walked around alott and shot a few people. I learned how to take care of myself. nothing's going to happen to you....not on my watch. Your going to be ok...nothing is going to happen to you here. You can rest now. Because I kept going into shock they kept sedating me# And I hated being sedated....like a wild animal struggling against a,will to survive... I may not remember there names...but I remember there kindness. They were undaunted by my flinches or uncontrollable tremors....they sensed that what my experience in the world was also great....and there warm steady hands and unshakable compassion patience and understanding spoke volumes not in their words but their actions...a warm smile, waiting till I fell asleep, tucking in around my feet, reassurance that for that time no harm was going to come to me....and NOT retracting when I flinched but meeting that knee jerk reaction with a warm smile and gentle touch and persistence as if to say....you are safe with me. Something deep and profound which was something my mind knew but my body didn't listen to. No enemy shall harm you....i am your ally...i shall watch over you until you are able to stand up again....and You shall be alright! Cops, they are all different in their own ways. And it takes all kinds of folks to have a well rounded force. Officer friendly, officer hard knight, officer Cadillac, deputy b52 (from the love shack), officer tinker bell, the golden mean, peacock (swatt)...patrolman Kelly Clarkson and the rainbow band(no joke we were chatting and suddenly when she started speaking of spiritual perspectives and her personal beliefs a rainbow appeared!), milkshake, officer cookie (she was the one with the bag with the best cookies), officer A-1, Lamborghini (his real name is Ferrari but he's a c hristian so I remember him by the saying two shakes of a lamb's tail), there's oneduhwoman, woody (from toy story...no kidding he looks EXACTLY like the character and I did not name him his coworkers did), there's lionheart, officer goody 2 shoes, GQ, dolci gabbanna, moma bear, officer sassy (cat fights broke out with that name), queen of the damned (she works corrections and is a sweetheart of ah gal), LT sweettalk (I can't speak to him much because he makes me soft inside), motha Teresa, Tom thumb, funny thing is the toughest ones like the softest nicknames, like deputy bunny (a male btw), and when I saw tinker bell I said let's change your name up 2 something more hard core and she got a twinkle in her eye and said "I Am the Mexican Tinker bell. You gave me magic powers, and I Am not giving them back!" Everyone laughed....that was that I guess.... As an investigational journalist and fiction writer I gathered all of the names into a group called "the Bam.boo" club. I thought about writing a little book for only law n4rczment to cherish and smile, Mickey D likes his burgers lol...and 007 is very james bond lol...i have over 4 depts on the list....even had to quell a couple of sword fights and cat fights over a name here and there (can you believe one LT from another dept tried to Shanghai ah name from another dept....he got a 28p love note from me stating although I ape.re.cia.ted his forward move it ain't happening lol. Rank does not matter, neither does color, or anything else, each gets there own individual call sign and he got ah 10yard penalty...there is officer Samahdi on his crew, b9k ah k9 cop duo, and I think officer terror-bite, she's cool though.... The goon squad (ya have to be over 6'1" stature has its priveledge ah lovely group in booking that will happily greet those entering hotel California who are in need of that extra special loving care 4 those who n.joy ministering (counseling) those who need extra ah10shun every now and then. I always say incarceration and arrests need not always be an unpleasant experience as long as you play well with others and abide by kindergarten rules of following Good Orderly Conduct and keep your hands to yourself right. These are the Bamboo Club....those who protect and serve, who are the n obel onez, tirelessly carrying out there duty everyday...in ways the general public can not imagine. It is these that I strived to work well with.... It is these faithful men and women who not only changed my life but the lives of others. Daily. They are....the badge of spirit, humanity, faith, and grace. They are not only the letter if the law but the spirit if the Law. They are the Bamboo club....the thin blue line.... They are justice.... They are the long arm of the law Who bend their knee and stand watch over the streets devoted On high watch They are the ones who sacrifice Their badges shine brighter than the son 4 all US 1 and all.

I have free time to myself on days that I'm off, I spend most of those days with my daughter. Work schedule varies depending where you go but personally I work four days on three days off with rotating weekends. Right now I work 9pm-7am. I get to be up to put my daughter to bed and I'm always home in time to wake her up for school and pick her up when she gets out so it's perfect for me

I had experience with a dead body as a intern for a smaller police department. Very sobering moment in my life and made me realize a lot of things, it was very sad to learn he had no relatives and was a loner so it was a very sad day. But I learned a lot and actually it drove me to become an officer even more. Currently working on becoming a State Trooper in Michigan.

I saw an episode of Cops a really long time ago (maybe early 90's). The cop featured as pretty senior, a Captain I think. He was clearly suffering from burn out. They got called to a murder scene. This guy, (who had a protective order against him) had broken in and shot his wife and kids, ranging in age from about 6 to 6 months. He killed his family then himself. The cop took one look at the baby in the crib with his head blown off and just left. He left the camera crew at the scene, drove back to the station and turned in his badge. You guys see the very worst of society every day. And how often do you get to see the good side? I have no idea how you guys stay sane. "Respect" is not a strong enough word here.

This man hit it right on the head. Similar things can be said for those in the Fire and EMS service, I’m an EMT myself. Like he said, these are just the ugly moments. No Guarantee a First Responder will experience any of these horrific tragedies every shift or the next shift. There are a lot of happy moments, I would argue more than ugly ones. But the reason the ugly moments are more important is because it’s not the happy ones that wake you up at night. It’s not the happy ones that you question if you made the right call. It’s not the happy ones that make you wonder if you’re going to come home to your family that night. It’s not the happy ones that stick with you for the rest of your life. It’s not the happy ones that lead to anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Everyone trys to live their life the happiest, and the fullest it can be. You can never have too much happiness in your life. But you can have too much sadness and broken hearts. Some people can tolerate those ugly moments better than others, but everyone has their breaking point. It’s natural for humans to experience joyful times, it’s not natural for humans to witness horrific scenes and pain and suffering on other humans, so often. That is the unfortunate reality of a Law Enforcement Officer, or any First Responder. They see more trauma and broken people/families in one month than the average citizen sees in their entire life. So if you decide to become a First Responder, that’s fantastic! But understanding these ugly moments that you will inevitably see is why it’s important to ask for help when YOU need it. First Responders are always hesistant to call for help themselves (I’m guilty as charged.) Some things are understandable. Even the stubborn ones that will walk on their broken leg immediately after surgery or something like that. When it comes to mental health, you CANNOT wait until that spirals out of control before you ask for help. And as a First Responder, keep an eye on your colleagues. It is far more difficult and time consuming to heal a broken brain than a broken leg. Mental illnesses are very real, and are arguably more dangerous than real illnesses. Real illnesses can be treated with proven medicines, which is a science. Since every person is different, it’s impossible to know how their brain works. If it’s sick, such as reliving a horrible car accident where 3 children died, the brain plays tricks on the person and does what it wants. It’s impossible to look into your head, so it’s impossible to find the best solution. That’s why mental health issues take so long to bring under control, if at all. Become a First Responder for the happy moments, but be aware of the ugly moments. And when you’ve seen too many ugly moments, reach out. Get help. You’re colleagues will be there for you.

my dad was a police offizer in germany and he said the worst are car accidents because german autobahns have no speedlimits at some parts and some people dont know their limits. also sleepwalkers near autobahns. the first thing you find are usualy the shoes with the feet still inside. the bodys are bizarely riped apart a direct hit of a car with 200kmh or 120 mph is deadly in any way.

Not sure what your argument is, but it does not mean that speed limits should be instated in those parts of Autobahn. Artificially low speed limits do not serve any purpose, other than revenue generation, and are highly unsafe.

I couldn't agree with you more! I am an EMT and I have been on some very rough calls- from strokes, to a dead person from cardiac arrhythmia, to bloody wounds. What they will never prepare you in school for are the horrifying calls that come from your dispatcher to respond to. That one dead body surely changed the way I thought about the living and the dead. Like Officer401 says, you never know when the fly will drop or when the stuff hits the fan. As I'm nearing my 20th B-day, all I can say is to everyone out there is love your family, friends, and anyone else out there who is keeping you safe like fellow police officers, firemen, and ems because, like every living thing, it will die someway and somehow. Enjoy it while you still can! Because others are sadly suffering out there and need help. But for anyone going into public services like these, you are doing a great thing for people! I honor that with all my heart. You go and save people's life! Do your job and your protocols right, and you'll be proud of yourself, even if you tried so hard to keep someone alive and it sadly doesn't happen. And remember, "it's not all about the badge, uniform, equipment, etc!" --officer401

In 5th grade, I was in the D.A.R.E program and I absolutely loved the officer that came to my school and taught us. At the end of the school year, we were going to have a party for our graduation, and the day of the party I got the news that my officer had been killed by a drunk driver on his way to work that day. I was heartbroken and I never forgot him. He was a huge part of my life and he still is today. There is a picture of him on my bedroom wall and it has been there since 5th grade (I'm in 10th grade now). When I moved, it was the first thing to go up in my new room. Why people are so hard on this? NFL is a private business, they get paid by ads and sponsors. Cops are a public service paid by taxes, if you wanted to pay them more you have to take away from other public expenses.

"When a kid hugs onto your leg and doesn't want to let go..." My heart, man... Every servant of justice is doing God's work. Keeping you guys continually in prayer. You guys need cover over your hearts and minds with all the things you see. God has to watch even the things you don't see, so just know he totally gets what you're experiencing. They call God a tyrant and monster too because he IS justice. Praying he removes all the bad memories and burdens and restore your peace after each experience because your are not only dealing with human nature but the demons that goad them on. An angel at every one of your backs, offices and squad cars in Jesus' name.

God has nothing to do with the horrors that we face every day. Pray till you have run out of words. Not one thing you pray for is going to change the behavior of a psychopath or sick, twisted individual that preys on the weak and vulnerable. Human beings are seriously flawed. If it makes you feel good to pray, then by all means do so. Brother......it aint gonna change one goddamned thing. I have seen million dollar mansions from the inside, and I have seen shooting galleries with dirty people and dirty infected hypodermic needles covering every inch of the floor, along with people so fucked up,or dead, and the other animals in the room turn his pockets inside out..take his coat and shoes. THAT is reality my friend. Devastating, but true.

T-zay, it is a beautiful thought and comment you made. Wishing every man or woman who serves at the cost of emotional and physical hurt is indeed noble. There may be some bad apples as they say , but that is in ALL occupations that us humans have. While I do not fgor one second believe in any god , and believe Jesus Christ was no more than a good willed man who saw the injustices of the Romans and some of the Jews, he is really the first Hippie, or radical to walk and defy tyranny ,knowing he would pay a high price if captured or charged. That takes a strong willed and noble man, and to me ,he was that. That ,in my humble opinion is far more brave and moving than anything I have done in my life. I do not agree with your Religion, or ANY organized religion, as they tend to make people think "my god is better than yours, and therefore I have a right to take your land and wage war on your kind" But your comment moved me, and I hope that your prayers are somehow answered. With respect, thank you.

@Antique Mickey you got that right! Ya think god would let a disease like corona virus out on the world? Or the Black death, or smallpox,to name just a few? When I was young, I used to consider that there could be a god out there. But even then,I knew that it was just another fairy tale. Noah`s ark. LOL yeah OK, you were told by god to build a ship and find a male and female of every species on earth. But some idiots take that as gospel...pure truth. That is sooooo fucking out of the twilight zone,it is not even funny. IMPOSSIBLE. IMPOSSIBLE to find that today with modern tech and mobility. The bible was written by zealot men,who had no clue as to what made it rain, or thinking the earth is flat and the sky could fall on you. Some idiots are now saying the earth is flat again. I blow lightning bolts out of my ass when I fart and the ground shakes when I get angry. Reading that dudes comment just made the fuckin world shake!!!

Thank you for your service sir. I joined the Air Force to become A Security Policemen. Only to be denied because I'm colored blind. They chose my job of notifying next of kin in casualties instead. I've seen some bad situations that you wouldn't wish on anyone. Security policemen stuck in a bunker for 12 hr shifts only to shoot themselves in the head because of the stress of being a officer or high divorce rates among cops. 19 yr old kid who was taking hear meds and decided to get drunk and thought he could fly off a 6 story bldg. DOD teacher who came home from work and stripped down to his boxers and had a heart attack laying on his bed. It was 95° and wasn't found for 2 weeks. When we found him we realized he had a 1/2 dozen cats. And you know what cats can and will do to a dead body. Thank you for all the shitty days you show up for work and try to impart empathy on people who can't spell it. Thank you for trying to stop unlawful people from doing harm to my friends family and neighbors. I wish I could help you do what you do and make this world a better place. God bless

you know law enforcement has always scared me even tho i have never committed a crime, i'm a shy person and a police officer asking me questions they would think i'm suspicious because i would be reaaaly nervous. i remember once i was walking my dog late at night like around 1am (i am usually up around then and he really wanted to go for one anyway) strolling around the neighborhood and this police cruiser did a U turn and pulled right in front of me, two guys came out and started asking me questions about like a security alarm that went off like 6 blocks away i couldn't hear it earlier so idk and they said i looked suspicious walking my dog at this hour and i didn't know what to say i was so scared, i just told them i do this pretty often and i didn't know about the alarm, and they layed off me and where on their way, but i was still shaken about it, it felt like i was getting mugged surrounded threatened. the point of this post is that you make me feel more comfortable with the police knowing that there are reasonable and nice people :).

That's entirely YOUR mental state and perception of them. You have no reason to fear them yet you do. You both need to either reflect on yourselves and figure out what's going on and how to improve or go to therapy. Severe social anxiety like you two are claiming is not good.

Yea, you better believe they still expect us to be normal! My last report came from a woman who thought I had an attitude with her. She starved her young 3 yr/o daughter to death, and almost her infant son. The boy was 80% rash and dirt, and 100% skin and bones. While EMS worked on the baby boy to get him some care the mother just sat there texting her friend as if it was a normal Saturday night. Having kids myself I'm thankful another officer was there so I could stay level headed with her. -Officer D.
