Simon, when I lived in Blackburn Lancs I remember the beautiful Thwaites dray horses bringing the barrels to the pubs. Here's a bit of nerdy guitar talk: Brian's Red Special has a scale length of 1.5" less than a Strat, and a nut width of about 3mm more than many guitars. And, it sounds much better, in my humble view, played with a plastic pick than a British sixpence.

I was 4 when this album was released, & my older siblings were huge Queen fans. My favorite song growing up was '39, even though I didn't understand the lyrics. Today, my top-3 would be '39, Death on 2 Legs, & Love of my Life. Bohemian is a distant 4th, & You're My Best Friend is probably 12th.

Some astute observations guys👍🏻 No two songs sound the same, yet the album has a flow that would be disturbed if any of the songs wasn't there. I loved the heaviness of the prophet song and the panning effects of the acapella section wowed me as a youngster. I always liked Roger's songs such as tenement funster, sheer heart attack, and fun it, so no apologies for placing I'm in love with my car so high. I love the Noel Cowardism of lazing on a Sunday afternoon, and the trumpet section on seaside rendezvous must have had the band pissing themselves when they recorded it. It's a special album from a band at the absolute peak of their powers. MPV goes to Brian May who somehow seems to play exactly what's needed no matter what style of song. A true guitar hero🤘🏻 1. The prophet song 2. Death on two legs 3. I'm in love with my car 4. Bohemian rhapsody 5. Lazing on a Sunday afternoon 6. Seaside rendezvous 7. Sweet lady 8. Love of my life 9. Good company 10. 39 11. You're my best friend 12. Good save the Queen

I actually do listen to "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" and "Seaside Rendezvous" by themselves all the time! But I also listen to ELP songs like "Jeremy Bender" and "The Sheriff" by themselves too and love them. It may be because I got into these bands as a child and those songs obviously hit me more instantly than the lengthier, far more complex material so I have a great fondness for all the English whimsy. I also grew up in the Midwest of the US so perhaps it even filled me with a little sense of adventure. It also helps that these bands had the sense to get in and get out with these more "novelty" songs so even if you don't enjoy them, you only wasted a minute or two of your time hah

As you said you shouldn`t have ranked this album but I`m so glad that you did! Thoroughly enjoyed this video guys, you all added a lot to it and hit many nails on the head! I was going to say before you made it that `ANATO` would really suit an episode of `The Good Old Days` and Simon mentioned that right near the start! For many years I have often thought how brilliant it would be if they had done an episode of that but hey ho. So many things I like about this album and you`ve mentioned so many already but I wanted to say one of the things I like is that it took me a little time to get into it and appreciate all the little oddities. In time I realised how brilliant it is and how it all works together so well. I could talk a lot about this album but as I said earlier you covered so much of it already 👏Ok, here is my ranking - 12. God Save The Queen - I like this and really like Brian`s sound here. Steven, speak your heart and never be afraid to. What I would like to see the Scottish people singing along to as their national anthem is Runrig`s `Hearts of Olden Glory`. Start a petition to make it so and I shall be the first person to sign it! 🙂 11. Good Company - nice 10. Sweet Lady - good sleazy rocker 9. Seaside Rendezvous - you can just imagine them performing this on `The Good Old Days` wearing striped blazers and straw boaters! 8. Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon - very English and very charming! (As you said Steven/Simon this is very much an English album) 7. `39 - very emotive and one of Brian`s finest songs 6. You`re My Best Friend - pop perfection with great drums and would be much higher for me had it been released on any other album 5. Love of My Life - beautiful and agree the live version is the best 4. I`m in Love With My Car - what a fantastic rock vocalist Roger Taylor is! This was the `B` side to Bohemian Rhapsody and probably the greatest 7" single of all time if you are taking into consideration the standard of the `A` and `B` sides on a 7" combined. Even stronger than The Beatles `Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane`. A top ten all time greatest singles released could be a possible video there in itself guys? Have that one on me! 😉 3. The Prophet`s Song - just astonishing 2. Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to... - this song sounds so vicious! Pete I agree I think this is a stronger opener than `Tie Your Mother Down` and that is really saying something. I first heard this song when I bought Queen`s first EP which led with the single`Good Old Fashioned Loverboy`. It also featured `Death on Two Legs`, `Tenement Funster` and `White Queen`. Wow, if there is a better four track EP out there then please let me know about it. Great idea to do that because it got me intrigued about three albums previously released. Good marketing! 1. Bohemian Rhapsody - takes the crown. Incredible piece of work. Enough said.

Greetings gents, another stellar show, luckily not Stella, about one of the most perfect albums ever made, although, when I heard Night At The Opera mentioned I hoped, in vain, for a Blind Guardian episode, but there you go, no such luck! No beer today as I'm listening at work, but I have just spent week in the Lake District and have come back with a good dozen bottles of ale from up there which I will be namechecking in the weeks to come... and yes Simon, I did wave in your general direction as I crawled past Preston at 15mph on the M6... Totally agree with the pointlessness of over analysing this one, but it was fun to do! As usual, I did my ranking before listening to avoid undue influence, so here goes... 12 God Save The Queen (unnecessary) 11 Seaside Rendezvous (fun) 10 Sweet Lady (good not great) 9 Good Company (no synths!) 8 You're My Best Friend (aw, nice) 7 39 (just a great tune) 6 Lazing... (wacky, fab guitar tone) 5 ...My Car (daft but great rocker) 4 Love of My Life (just beautiful) 3 Bo Rhap (No comment needed) 2 Death On Two Legs (Brilliant!) 1 Prophet's Song (Epic, varied, etc) Thanks, also, to Simon, for namechecking Dereck Guyler, bringing back memories of watching him in Sykes (as policeman, Corky) and, weirdly, as the voice of the dancing skeleton in the Scoth blank cassette advert!!! Gotthard is, indeed, pronounced Got Hard, and is the name of a stunning mountain pass in Switzerland, a bit like the Hardknott pass in the Lake District only on a bigger scale... As for God Save The Queen, Billy Connolly was right when he said it should be replaced by the Archers radio theme tune... Thanks again guys, see you in a couple of weeks, hopefully with a beer!

I'm absolutely in line with Pete on this one though, with "The Prophet's Song", "Death on Two Legs" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" being my top three from this album, in that order. It would be impossible to overstate just how important and influential "The Prophet's Song" was on what would become epic heavy metal (like Manilla Road) and the more adventurous and progressive side of power metal (like Blind Guardian). I still find myself endlessly rewinding the "Ah ah, ah ah - and two by two, a human zoo" part over and over, some of the most beautiful harmonies in all of Queen's catalog, which is a colossal statement considering that it's, well... QUEEN

The big question here is where you put 'that' song. It has become so ubiquitous that it's hard to detach yourself from the overplayedness and remember what a masterpiece it truly is. So where exactly do we put I'm in Love With My Car? I have a feeling my list will be a lot less rocky than the three gentlemen will pick. That said, I don't think there's anything really bad here. Bo Rap (I had to in the end. Overplayed perhaps, but not if you don't listen to the radio.) You're My Best Friend (great pop from my favourite Queen member. Have a feeling the gents will rate this highly) Death on Two Legs The Prophet's Song (I don't think this one is quite the masterpiece some do, but it's still great) Love of My Life (gorgeous) Seaside Rendezvous Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon Sweet Lady (like the verses more than the chorus) Good Company I'm in Love With My Car (sorry- it's a fun enough rocker I guess) God Save the Queen (quite like how it ties up the semi-concept, but feels more like a skit. I'd be in favour of every Queen album ending with it though)

Wow, lot's to digest for us oldies, as lots of great 70's references- it ain't half hot mum (oh dear. How sad. Never Mind), sweetheart stout et al, all before ranking the tracks on Night, which, personally, isn't my fav Queen album, nor their best. Despite still being hardish rock, it's also true that until this, Queen were often derided and not taken seriously. My best mate at school, Steph Stuart, used to bludgeon me with l, ll and SHA, and it took a while for Queen to click with me, and I recall in music class when the teacher would allow us to bring our albums in to get played, David Culross brought in Sheer heart attack...and we laughed and sneered at him for it! So to the ranking- 12 God Save the Queen, Lazing, Seaside, Good Company, Sweet Lady, Love of my Life (was my fav ballad but I think 'is this the world we created' renders this quite twee and weak now), You're my Best Friend (Deacon is so underrated throughout Queen's career), I'm in love with my car 39 (love the stomp, the acoustic guitar, harmonies) Prophet's Song (great, but too long, and not the genuine 'epic' it thinks it is) Death on two legs (top two are constantly interchangeable) Bohemian Rhapsody (kept not only the genius L&H off Xmas number 1, but also Greg Lake)

Not an easy task, nor one I intend to partake in. One of the albums that had a major impact on me, and my musical trajectory, in general. It seems a very common sentiment (particularly amongst the more staunch rock / metal and prog fans), but I never once saw tracks like "Seaside Rendezvous," "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon," and "Good Company" as silly or nonsensical - perhaps I was just too mesmerized by the musicality / craftsmanship of those tracks to fall into that way of thinking. Furthermore, I love the fact that those tracks were far removed from the more traditional rock aesthetic. In truth, it was some years after soaking up Queen's discography that I became cognizant of the fact that the above-mentioned descriptors were frequently applied to those tracks (and the band, to some extent.) A Night at the Opera isn't my favorite album from Queen; I place Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack above it. However, it's still a major part of my musical DNA, and I love all the tracks on here - separately and as part of the larger whole. Queen is still my all-time fave band. Oh, alright - I'll bite just a little: Track 12 would be my... twelfth, and don't tell anybody, but "Bohemian Rhapsody" blows my mind just as it did when I first heard it as an 11-year-old. If forced, it would be my #1 on here. 🤫 (Fun fact: "'39" is actually the 39th track in Queen's discography - something I actually picked up on way back then, I'm happy to say. Just start from "Keep Yourself Alive" off of the first album, and count from there.)

How you could be put off by the acapella section of The Prophet Song but, rank Bohemian Rhapsody number 1 is beyond me but, that's how he hears 'em. I personally threw Boho Rhap into Audacity and precisely removed the overly campy "opera" section and I now remember why I loved this song so much when I was younger. They should consider releasing it without the mama mia galileo section.

Tried to write a rating but I love most of the tracks on this equally so it's not possible... only Sweet Lady really palls... always found it weak. I love the studio version of Love of My Life more than the live ones because Freddie's piano is something else and his backing vocals are killer... The Death on Two Legs piano intro is so iconic and a big influence on me... The whole vaudeville thing really works.... I admire Good Company for it's technical proficiency though never loved it as much as Lazing and Seaside... Overall not my fav Queen album (Sheer Heart Attack and Day at The Races are my #1s)

Its a great album it's a classic for a reason. Its a hard one to rank those songs. Where to rank the big hits and where to rank the rockers, the ballets, folk and Broadway songs. A Night At The Opera is a great title because some of the songs sorta sounds like a Broadway musical to me. Here is my ranking. 1. You're My Best Friend 2. Death On Two Legs. What a album opener. 3. Love Of My Life 4. '39 5. Bohemian Rhapsody. I know that the song has been over played over the years but it is still a great song and has to be in the top 5. 6. Sweet Lady 7. The Prophet's Song 8. Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon. This song would have been ranked higher if it wasn't for being too short. Just when it starts getting good it ends. 9. I'm In Love With My Car. It's a good rocker but not to good of lyrics. 10. Good Company. Its a repeat of '39 to me. 11. Seaside Renezvous. 12. God Save The Queen. Should have extended longer to make it a little different. With a longer guitar solo. I don't think that there is any bad songs on this album

Beautiful album, start to finish. I love it to bits. PS Don’t mention God Save The Queen to the Scots, who are very ill-used by the lyrics. A dirge- but as on the album it is a good album closer. Brian is a Hendrix devotee, so this is a Star Spangled Banner for Brits. PPS. Pete, Simon mentioned Sid James as a 70s entertainer. He also played the heroic, drunk journalist in Quatermass II: Enemy From Space (as Sidney James).

It is so tough to put together a "best of" Queen list. I have to agree that the sales numbers are far too low; the official numbers. I still think my favorite is Queen II, but I like all their albums (yes, even Hot Space has some moments IMO). Sheer Heart Attack, Jazz, The Game, even Innuendo are all really good. I think I like all the tracks on A Night At The Opera, but I just can't give you a list of which worst to best. Bohemian Rhapsody is probably the most interesting "massive rock hit" of all time. It has charted high in 3 different eras, and if you compare it to that other massive hit single from fellow British band Led Zeppelin (Stairway to Heaven), I find Bohemian Rhapsody the better and more interesting tune. My favorite from this album is The Prophet's Song, followed by Death On Two Legs. That hasn't changed in years. I love heavy music mainly, but love Queen. Also, like Pete said, if anybody doesn't think Queen was ever heavy, they haven't listened to Queen!
